If achild sleeps on one side, the teeth on thatside will be more decayed since that iswhere the liquid from the bottle willaccumulate. The same can also be truewith prolonged breastfeeding. The problem affects up to 6 percent ofchildren under the age of four. In verysevere cases, baby teeth can decay up tothe gum line. In other cases, a parentbrings a child to the dentist asking whythe child's permanent teeth have not comein. The dentist often finds that the teethcame in but were decaying as fast as theywere growing.Parents can detect decay by regularlychecking children's teeth for brown orwhite spots and noting missing teeth.Weaning children from the bottle orbreast as soon as possible and properbrushing and flossing at an early age arethe important steps in fighting thesyndrome. When the first baby teeth havecome in, the only liquid that a childshould have in a bottle at bedtime iswater. Parents need to help childrenclean their teeth until the child can do thejob on their own. For further information, call the dental clinic at ext. 1A77.NFFE LOCAL 1690 MEETINGThere will be a monthly NFFELocal 1690 meeting on Wednesdayin Criscuolo Hall from 4:30 6 p.m.For further Information, call AlvinLau at ext. 2164 or Lynn Boyle atext.2470.
