APhA2017Professionwide Awards and HonorsREMINGTON HONOR MEDALThe Remington Honor Medal, named for eminent community pharmacist, manufacturer, and educator JosephP. Remington (1847–1918), was established in 1918 to recognize distinguished service on behalf of Americanpharmacy during the preceding years, culminating in the past year, or during a long period of outstandingactivity or fruitful achievement.Daniel Hussar, BSPharm, MS, PhD, was selected in recognition of his teaching, leadership, scholarly accomplishments, and advocacy/activism. Hussar is an authority on new medications and hasdeveloped the New Drug Comparison Rating system, in which he compares new drugs with oldermedications. His monthly newsletter, The Pharmacist Activist, includes a review of a new drug andan editorial. As the Remington Professor of Pharmacy and former dean at the Philadelphia Collegeof Pharmacy at the University of the Sciences, Hussar puts the interests of his students first, and his recognitionsinclude an AACP Distinguished Pharmacy Educator Award. Hussar is a former member of APhA’s Board ofTrustees and a past Honorary President. In addition to his activism for the profession, he is willing to raise thetough questions and he is a strong advocate for patient safety initiatives and optimum drug therapy. Hussar andhis wife Suzanne have been married for 49 years and have been blessed with three sons and their wives andnine grandchildren.HUGO H. SCHAEFER AWARDThe Hugo H. Schaefer Award was established by the American Pharmacists Association in 1964 to honor thelong-time APhA Treasurer, Dr. Hugo H. Schaefer, for a lifetime of contributions to the profession of pharmacyand in particular for his service to APhA. The purpose of the award is to recognize an individual who has madeoutstanding voluntary contributions to society as well as to the profession of pharmacy and APhA.Clark H. Gustafson, Pharm, was selected in recognition of his service to his profession, his almamater, and his community. Gustafson has served APhA on its Board of Trustees and as treasurer. Apast president of CPhA, he also served on its Board of Trustees. The state association has honoredhim with a Pharmacist-of-the-Year Award and induction into its California Pharmacists Hall ofFame. Gustafson created Optimal Hospice Foundation, whose mission is to ensure families haveaccess to hospice care regardless of their ability to pay. Gustafson is a dedicated servant to his alma mater,University of the Pacific Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, where he is a mentor,lecturer, preceptor, and a member of the University Board of Regents. He has served on the Dean’s LeadershipCouncil for 15 years. These contributions earned Gustafson Alumnus of the Year recognition in 2010.2 I AMERICAN PHARMACISTS ASSOCIATION

HUMPHREY AWARDThe Humphrey Award, named for the noted pharmacist, long-time APhA Member, and public servant (senatorfrom Minnesota and U.S. Vice President) was established in 1978 to recognize APhA Members who have mademajor contributions in government and/or legislative service.Rep John Forbes (D-IA), BSPharm, was selected in recognition of his contribution to the pharmacyprofession and public service through his participation in local and state government. Forbes hasbeen a member of the Iowa State House of Representatives since 2013. In this role, he serves onthe Health and Human Services Budget Subcommittee, Ways and Means, Commerce, HumanResources Policy, and Transportation Committees. During his time in the Iowa House, Forbes hasestablished himself as an authority on health care policy. His work focuses on improving access to care forchildren and seniors. He has been involved in the Medical Assistance Advisory Council, has served on the boardof the children’s insurance program, and has sponsored legislation to strengthen advocacy for long-term carepatients. Prior to his election to the House, Forbes was a member of the Urbandale City Council for eight years.GOOD GOVERNMENT PHARMACIST-OF-THE-YEAR AWARDSupported by the APhA Political Action Committee Board of GovernorsThe award, established in 1990, recognizes an individual pharmacist who actively contributes to the communitythrough his or her involvement in the political process.Michael Blaire, BSPharm, was selected in recognition of his state-and federal-level advocacy forthe pharmacy profession. Blaire served on the board of directors of the International Academy ofCompounding Pharmacists (IACP) and was Chairman of ComPAC, IACP’s Political Action Committee (PAC). He serves on the National Community Pharmacy Association’s PAC. He is former chairof Arizona Pharmacy Alliance’s PAC, chairman-elect of APhA’s compounding SIG, and a memberof the Arizona State Board of Pharmacy. Blaire has been a top fundraiser for APhA’s PAC. He is a member ofthe National Association of Independent Business (NFIB) leadership council and has served as Precinct andState Committeeman in Arizona Legislative District 23. Blaire has represented APhA, NCPA, and IACP onCapitol Hill. He has hosted members of Congress and the Senate at his compounding facility in Scottsdale, AZ,where he has educated them on the importance of access to compounded medications. His legislative contactsconsider him a resource on pharmacy issues.HONORARY MEMBERSHIPHonorary membership in the American Pharmacists Association is conferred by the APhA Board of Trusteesupon individuals, either within the profession of pharmacy or outside of it, whose activities and achievementshave had a significant impact on public health, the profession, and its practitioners.Eileen Gans, BSN, was selected in recognition of her service and consistent support of the pharmacy profession and APhA. From her husband John Gans’ tenure as executive vice president andCEO of APhA through today, Gans has been a powerful voice for the pharmacy profession. She isa regular participant in APhA activities, often traveling in order to participate. An avid supporterof her husband’s role in APhA, Gans has been his sounding board, champion and coach. Notunlike those in the pharmacy profession, Gans too has integrated continuous service into her daily life throughactive volunteering at her church, her children’s schools, and service to her local community.IN RECOGNITION OF EXCELLENCE 2017 I 3

APhA2017HONORARY PRESIDENTHonorary President of the American Pharmacists Association is conferred by the Association upon a memberwho has made significant contributions to the Association.Philip Burgess, BSPharm, DPh, MBA, was selected in recognition of his lifelong commitment topromoting the pharmacy profession and encouraging individual pharmacists within it. In his nearly50 years as an APhA member, he has fostered relationships among APhA, industry, and otherprofessional organizations. He has capitalized on his role in each of these forums to advance thepharmacy profession. Over a 40-year career at Walgreens, Burgess served as a liaison betweenthe company and APhA. He brought his knowledge of APhA policy from the House of Delegates to top executives at Walgreens and NACDS, which granted him its Harold Pratt Lifetime Achievement Award. As presidentof the Community Pharmacy Foundation (CPF) since it was founded in 2002, Burgess was instrumental indeveloping CPF’s organizational structure and positioning it to drive innovation in pharmacy practice. Under hisleadership, CPF has provided significant funding to the APhA Foundation. Burgess’s many other contributions toAPhA include his work with the HIT Advisory Board.GLORIA NIEMEYER FRANCKE LEADERSHIP MENTOR AWARDThis award recognizes an APhA member who has promoted and encouraged pharmacists to attain leadershippositions within pharmacy through example as a role model and mentor. The pharmacist for whom the awardis named—Gloria Niemeyer Francke, PharmD—personally exemplified the award’s criteria. Dr. Francke, 1986APhA Honorary President and 1987 Remington Honor Medalist, inspired and mentored future leaders throughout her illustrious pharmacy career.Thomas P. Reinders, PharmD, was selected in recognition of exemplary leadership in the pharmacyprofession. Reinders is retired from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) as associate dean forAdmissions and Student Services. During his tenure at VCU, he held numerous administrativepositions, including director of pharmacy services at the Medical College of Virginia Hospitals.During more than 25 years of volunteer service with the U.S. Pharmacopeia, Reinders chaired theExpert Committee on Nomenclature, Safety, and Labeling. He served on the FDA Cardiovascular and RenalDrugs Advisory Committee. During his career, he mentored more than 5,000 student pharmacists and 100pharmacy residents. Reinders has received several awards, including the Bowl of Hygeia Award for Outstanding Community Service, the VCU Distinguished Faculty Award for Teaching, and the University of CincinnatiCollege of Pharmacy Distinguished Alumnus Award. In addition, the Virginia Pharmacists Association andVirginia Society of Health-System Pharmacists previously named him Pharmacist-of-the-Year. He is a fellow of theAPhA Academy of Pharmacy Practice.4 I AMERICAN PHARMACISTS ASSOCIATION

APhA2017DISTINGUISHED FEDERAL PHARMACIST AWARDEndowed by the Roche FoundationEstablished in 2002, the Distinguished Federal Pharmacist Award is the Association’s premier award to recognize pharmacists who have distinguished themselves and the profession by outstanding contributions in federalpharmacy practice that have resulted in a significant improvement in the health of the nation and/or the population they serve.COL (Ret) John Spain, PharmD, MA, BCPS, was selected in recognition of his contributions to armypharmacy and patient care. Spain is Army Pharmacy Consultant and Pharmacy Program Directorin the Office of the Army Surgeon General, who awarded him the Order of Military Medical Meritand 9A designation, a distinction for exceptional leaders and professionals in army medicine. Inthis role, Spain oversees army pharmacy operations worldwide, which include 38 pharmacies and2,000 personnel. Under his leadership, a policy and process were developed to improve the care of woundedsoldiers with polypharmacy concerns. As Integrated Chief of Pharmacy at Walter Reed National MilitaryMedical Center, Spain integrated the culturally distinct army and navy pharmacy operations into one cohesiveteam, supporting 500,000 patients and executing a 187 million budget. Spain has also served as PharmacyConsultant Central Command, Multi-National Force Iraq, where he provided medication support for more than160,000 U.S. and coalition forces in a theater of war.H.A.B. DUNNING AWARDThe purpose of the award is to recognize an exemplary contribution to APhA and the practice of pharmacy bya pharmaceutical manufacturer, provider of support products or service, or other entities such as wholesalers,chain corporations, etc. The H.A.B. Dunning Award was established in 1982 to honor the former Chairman ofthe Board of Hynson, Westcott and Dunning of Baltimore, MD, who as a longstanding APhA leader was instrumental in the funding and building of the APhA headquarters building in Washington, DC.Pfizer, Inc., was selected in recognition of its contribution to the advancement of pharmacy practice and public health. Pfizer launched the Appointment-Based Model in 2010 and has encouraged its implementation in community pharmacies. It has also supported the model throughallocation of generous resources to Indian Health Service and armed forces pharmacies to facilitate implementation of appointment-based pharmacy in their health care sites. Pfizer has made substantial contributions toimmunization efforts and in support of pharmacists’ role as immunizers. The company supplied funding thathelped support the Immunization Champion Advocate Mentor Program (ICAMP), a training program for organizations that would like to improve health and wellness through vaccines, which is co-hosted by APhA andGerontological Society of America. Pfizer also provided support for RxVaccinate, a program aimed at providingcommunity pharmacies with educational resources they need to improve pneumococcal vaccination rates.IN RECOGNITION OF EXCELLENCE 2017 I 5

APhA2017COMMUNITY PHARMACY RESIDENCY EXCELLENCE IN PRECEPTING AWARDThe APhA Community Pharmacy Residency Excellence in Precepting Award was established to recognize a communitypharmacy residency director or preceptor who has demonstrated excellence in precepting, mentoring, leadership, andcommunity pharmacy residency program administration. The award, established in 2003, is intended to recognizepharmacy practitioners who excel as community pharmacy residency directors or preceptors.Laurie Warrington Fleming, PharmD, BC-ADM, BCACP, was selected in recognition of the commitment to herpatients, residents, and the profession that she models for the young pharmacists she precepts in the University ofMississippi School of Pharmacy Community Pharmacy Residency Program. Fleming demonstrates to her residentsher deep commitment to and care for patients, particularly those in underserved communities. She offers herresidents the opportunity for hands-on learning, offering feedback and encouragement. She collaborates withresidents on papers and presentations. Fleming models the type of inter-professional collaboration for which many healthcare professionals strive. In the clinic, physicians and other providers consistently seek her expertise.She exemplifiesprofessional commitment and leadership for her residents as well. Among her contributions to the profession, Fleming is apast President and Association Manager of the Mississippi Society of Health-System Pharmacists. University of Mississippistudent pharmacists named her Preceptor-of-the-Year last year, and she has been named Teacher-of-the-Year four times.DISTINGUISHED NEW PRACTITIONER AWARDThe Distinguished New Practitioner Award was established in 2010 to recognize an individual new practitioner whohas demonstrated distinctive achievements in mentorship, service, and commitment to the profession of pharmacy.Chelsea M. Anderson, PharmD, MBA, BCPS, is selected in recognition of her commitment to medicationsafety, her students, and the profession. A project manager at Purdue University College of Pharmacy’sCenter for Medication Safety Advancement, Anderson has been instrumental in the execution of grantfunded medication safety research studies. Last year, she received the Indiana Pharmacist AllianceMedication Safety Pharmacist-of-the-Year award. She is a preceptor; a member of Purdue’s FellowshipMentor Team; and lectures in various courses. Students praise her as a teacher and mentor. An active contributor toAPhA since she was a student, Anderson has served as Chair of the New Practitioner Network Communications andNetworking Standing Committee, a delegate to the 2016 House of Delegates, a member of the APhA–APPM AwardsStanding Committee, and Chair of the Patient Safety Workgroup, which published its findings last year in JAPhA.Anderson volunteers for her state association, her church, and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.GENERATION Rx AWARD OF EXCELLENCERestricted endowment from the Cardinal Health FoundationThe Generation Rx Award of Excellence was established in 2011 to recognize a pharmacist who has demonstrated acommitment to the mission of substance abuse education. This award is made possible through a restricted endowmentfrom the Cardinal Health Foundation.Sarah T. Melton, PharmD, BCPP, BCACP, FASCP, was selected in recognition of 20 years of dedication to fightingprescription drug abuse and opioid addiction in Appalachia. An advocate for reducing stigma and promotingevidence-based treatment, Melton cares for patients receiving medication-assisted treatment for opioid usedisorders. Both the Virginia and Tennessee Pharmacists Associations recognized Melton with their GenerationRx awards. Melton spearheaded a partnership between the Tennessee Department of Health and ETSU’sCollege of Pharmacy to train health care providers and laypeople in naloxone rescue. As a REVIVE! trainer in Virginia, Meltonhas trained more than 1,500 laypeople and 500 health care providers in naloxone rescue. Melton is Chair of OneCare ofSouthwest Virginia, a substance abuse collaborative that has trained more than 3,000 health care providers on prescriptiondrug abuse-related issues free of charge. She was twice appointed to the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth and haschaired the Education Workgroup in Governor Terry McAuliffe’s Task Force on Heroin and Prescription Drug Abuse.6 I AMERICAN PHARMACISTS ASSOCIATION

Beatty, PharmD, BCACP, CDE, is anassociate professor of clinical pharmacy atOhio State University College of Pharmacy.Beatty has been a pioneer in developing thepharmacist’s role in the patient-centeredmedical home through his work in the MarthaMorehouse General Internal Medicine Clinic. There, he wasa site coordinator for Project IMPACT: Diabetes. During his10 years at the clinic, Beatty has transformed the academicpharmacy practice into a sustainable pharmacy practicemodel. He has contributed valuable research on thepharmacist’s role in the PCMH through more than 15publications, 45 poster presentations, and 30 invitedpresentations. Beatty has served on numerous APhAcommittees and task forces.Liza G. Chapman, PharmD, is the pharmacyclinical sales manager and residencyprogram coordinator at The Kroger Companyin Atlanta, GA. Chapman played anindispensable role as Georgia PharmacyAssociation’s spokesperson and advocate inthe passage of the law that expanded the scope of adultimmunizations that pharmacists are authorized to administerunder a standing order. Chapman is a sought-after trainer inAPhA’s diabetes and immunization certificate programs. Shehas sat on numerous APhA committees and won multiplepharmacy and leadership awards in her state. Beginning inthe summer of 2017, as Georgia Pharmacy Association’sPresident and Chair of the Board, she will become thefirst-ever retail chain pharmacist to lead the organization.Ally Dering-Anderson, PharmD, RP, is aclinical assistant professor at the University ofNebraska Medical Center College ofPharmacy, where she is part of a researchteam that has garnered more than 1.3million in funding for research into newcommunity practice models and rapid diagnostic testing incommunity practice. An immunization advocate, Dering-Anderson has administered more than 40,000 immunizations.Using her voice to raise the profile of pharmacy, Dering-Anderson hosts the biweekly radio show Dr. Ally–Problems andSolutions. She has given more than 300 professionalpresentations and 42 live testimonies to legislators on behalfof pharmacy. Dering-Anderson has served on everycommittee of APhA’s House of Delegates.8 I AMERICAN PHARMACISTS ASSOCIATIONMary Ann Kliethermes, BS, PharmD, is vicechair for research in the department ofpharmacypractice at Midwestern UniversityChicago College of Pharmacy. Kliethermes’clinical work has helped advance thepatient-centered medical home and thepharmacist’s role within it while emphasizing the quality ofthe patient care provided. She has laid the groundwork forpharmacists’ inclusion in numerous academic team-basedclinics. Kliethermes has edited textbooks and presented atstate and national venues on topics including MTM, qualitymeasurement, PCMH, ambulatory care, and billing forpharmacy services. Her many contributions to APhA includechairing the PCMH/ACO SIG and representing APhA in thepharmacy quality alliance. She is an active participant andleader in her state pharmacy association and other nationalprofessional organizations.Catherine H. Kuhn, PharmD, is a clinicalpharmacist at Partners for Kids, NationwideChildren’s Hospital’s pediatric ACO inColumbus, OH. A leader, innovator, andpioneer, Kuhn created the MTM program atKroger Pharmacy Columbus Division, whereshe previously practiced. In collaboration with Kroger andOhio State University, she was part of the team that developed the university’s first accredited PGY1/2 Masters inCommunity Pharmacy Administration and Leadershipresidency. Kuhn is president-elect of the Ohio PharmacistsAssociation, where she has held numerous leadership roles.She has served on numerous APhA committees and held theelected office of APhA-APPM Executive Committee Memberat-Large. Kuhn volunteers her pharmacy services to a freemedical clinic in her community.Dao Le, PharmD, BCNP, is director of nuclearmedicine, radiopharmacy at the University ofTexas MD Anderson Cancer Center. As anitem writer and reviewer for the BPS NuclearPharmacy Specialty Council, of which shewas vice chair, Le upholds the high standardsof the specialty. She played a key role in developing theNuclear Pharmacy Technician training program according toAPhA guidelines. She is a member of APhA’s nuclearpharmacy expert committee. Le has served as New Practitioner Officer on APhA–APPM’s Nuclear Pharmacy PracticeSection in addition to holding leadership and committeeroles with other pharmacy organizations.

APhA2017Lt Col Ann D. McManis, BSC, BSPharm, MPA, isa pharmacist serving on Active Duty in theU.S. Air Force. She is assigned as DeputyChief of the Pharmacy Purchased CareOperations Branch, Defense Health Agency.McManis was APhA’s 2013-2014 Air ForceEducation with Industry Fellow. In this role, she participated inthe development of the Joint Commission of PharmacyPractitioners Pharmacists’ Patient Care Process. McManisserved in Operation Iraqi Freedom as a pharmacist deployedto Kirkuk Regional Air Base, Iraq. She has won numerousawards for her service. She is Director-at-Large of APhAAPPM and former member of the House of Delegates. Shehas served as a moderator, panelist, and presenter at annualmeetings. McManis is an active member and former Presidentof the Society of Air Force Pharmacy.Michael Schuh, BS, PharmD, MBA, is a clinicalpharmacist and assistant professor of pharmacy, family medicine, and palliativemedicine at Mayo Clinic Florida. He is atireless advocate for provider status andpharmacists’ role in MTM. Co-founder ofAPhA’s MTM SIG, Schuh helped develop the committeeinfrastructure that allowed the group to flourish after his termended. Schuh developed Mayo Florida’s MTM service fortransplant patients. He has mentored many new practitionerson their paths into entrepreneurial MTM practices. Schuh haschaired and served on several APhA committees and workgroups, held elected offices, and contributed his expertise tovarious publications. She serves asdirector of the university’s Community-Based ResearchProgram, which helps bring pharmacy services to theunderserved people of the Mississippi Delta, and is leadingthe development of a Center for Clinical and TranslationalScience at the University of Mississippi. During a two-yearcongressional fellowship in the office of U.S. Senator ThadCochran, Ross served as policy advisor on health care, labor,housing, and economic development. She has presented atAPhA annual meetings, reviewed and authored APhApublications, served as Advocacy Key Contact, and served inthe House of Delegates. Ross is a past president of theMississippi Pharmacists Association and the MississippiBiotechnology Association.Hoai-An Truong, PharmD, MPH, FNAP, is anassociate professor at the University ofMaryland Eastern Shore School of Pharmacyand Health Professions, where he wasfounding chair of the Eastern Shore Collaborative on Interprofessional Education (ESCIPE).He has taught more than 600 pharmacists and studentpharmacists in APhA/ASCP’s “Delivering Medication TherapyManagement in the Community” certificate training program.Truong co-chaired the Medication Management SIGeducation committee, and he has served in the APhA Houseof Delegates for more than 10 years.
