WELCOME,NEW LION!Hi!Enjoy the journey.Embrace the excitement(and the nervousness!)and remember that we areall in this together. You have more supportthan you can evenbegin to realize. My name is Lindsay Barndt, and I’m the director of theOffice of Student Transitions.I can’t wait to meet youon campus soon!WELCOME,PARENTS ANDGUARDIANS!2

You may be new here, but thankfully I’m not. Based on my experiences, here are some of my favorite “knowledge nuggets” for you to consider.#1Biggest mistake you can make?Forgetting to check your TCNJemail. Most offices on campuscommunicate only through email, and you will absolutely missimportant deadlines (including onlineorientation) by not logging in tocheck every few days.#2Help me help you via theTransition Times. It’s a newsletteremailed to your TCNJ account everytwo weeks all summer long.It takes two minutes to read and isproven to help keep new studentson track and less overwhelmed.#4#3TCNJ offers personalized, collaborative, and rigorouseducation. Each of our sevenacademic schools (and thedepartments within) does thingsa little differently. Don’t assumeyour pre-registration process will beexactly the same as someone else’s.#5Your PAWS ID number is officially your new BFF.You need those six digits for everything.Memorizing it would be a great idea.SUMMER REMINDER:We (TCNJ faculty and staff) like taking time off too!To do research, lead study abroad opportunities,or simply spend time with our families. Please be mindfulof this when contacting us, and we will do our best torespond in a timely manner. We both know that you will play an integral part in supporting your student throughthis period of big change, so here are some tips for you as well!#1#4If you can, attend any in-person or virtual parentsessions over the summer. There is no parentprogramming during Welcome Week in August,so this is your best opportunity to learn about campusresources and student support services, and to getYOUR questions answered! The Transition Times is for you too!Parents and guardians can opt in at any timeand have it sent to their personal email address.Email the Office of Admissions (admiss@tcnj.edu) andask to be added to your student’s online portal.#2#5COACH. DON’T DO. Reinforcing action itemsand deadlines to help your student stay on trackis great, but they should take ownershipover this process and lead the way.I SEE YOU, TOO. While my primary focusis your student, I am a mother to two little ones(9 and 3 1/2). I can only imagine how excited andnervous you must be. If there is any way my officecan help, please don’t hesitate to contact us.#3Quiz your student on that PAWS ID number. It really is needed for everything!FOR A SNEAK PEEK AT ALL THE AMAZING THINGS WE ARE PLANNING FOR YOUTHIS SUMMER, FOLLOW US ON INSTAGRAM (@OST TCNJ).3

LIBERAL LEARNINGAlthough students at TCNJ enroll in more than 50 different programs of study, all students completethe Liberal Learning Program. The foundation of your education, liberal learning ensures that you haveknowledge and skills in areas outside the specific discipline you plan to study.(or FYS for short). The FYS is a small, seminar-style class(usually capped at 18 students) that enables you to workclosely with peers and a professor on a topic outside of yourmajor. The course options change each year but always offera variety of topics like time travel, social justice, businessstartups, pop culture, leadership, and the history of wars (justto name a few). Why does TCNJ include liberal learning in your collegeeducation? Why not just complete a major? Liberal learningwill provide you with the skills, knowledge, and experiencesthat ensure you will be successful during and after college inboth your professional and personal life. It will deepen yourunderstanding of yourself and the world around you and willopen your eyes to other worlds and perspectives. Employerswant broadly trained graduates; in fact, 93 percentof employers say that the ability to think critically, communicate clearly, and solve complex problems isMORE important than a job candidate’s specific major. The FYS builds writing and research skills but requires acertain level of writing readiness for success. To determinethat readiness, all incoming students will take the WritingPlacement Exam in May. Students will either be placed intothe FYS for the fall semester OR enrolled in a First-YearWriting (FYW 102) course to strengthen those skills. Studentswho take FYW 102 in the fall will then take their First-YearSeminar during the spring semester. As an incoming first-year student, you’ll need to meet severalliberal learning requirements this summer and through yourfirst-year at TCNJ. One of these is the Summer ReadingProgram (SRP 099), which includes discussion with yourclassmates and a facilitator during Welcome Week. As abonus, you’ll get to see a live presentation about the bookduring the first week of classes. Another is InformationLiteracy (IDS 102), an online, 0-credit course that teachesyou how to conduct research for a class and how to find andevaluate information sources. You’ll be preregistered into thiscourse this fall. Both the FYS and FYW 102 are topics-based courses, and youwill have the opportunity to select your top six choices foreach when you fill out the First Semester Worksheet.Although not guaranteed, TCNJ makes every effort to giveyou one of these six when preregistering you for your fallclasses. You’ll also take one of the most important of your liberallearning courses during your first-year: the First-Year Seminar7
