Series of Apparitions On January 28, 1840, in Paris,France, the Blessed Virginappeared to Justine BisqueyburuDC, a Seminary Sister of theDaughters of Charity, while shewas at prayer in the conventchapel at Rue du Bac. This began a series of visitswhich culminated in a special giftof Mary: the Green Scapular.

The Scapular Mary held in her right hand herheart surrounded by flames, andin her left, a type of scapular.The scapular consisted of asingle small piece of green clothsuspended from a cord of thesame color. On one side of the piece ofcloth was a picture of theBlessed Virgin as she hadshown herself in the apparitions.On the other was a heartinflamed "with rays morebrilliant than the sun and clearerthan crystal."

The Scapular Our Lady's heart, pierced with asword, was surrounded by anoval inscription surmounted by across. The inscription read,"Immaculate Heart of Mary, prayfor us now and at the hour of ourdeath."

For the conversion ofsouls At the same time, an interiorvoice revealed to Sr. Justine themeaning of the vision and thatthe scapular should be sharedwith the world as an instrumentin the conversion of souls. By this means, God would bringto Himself, through theintercession of Blessed MotherMary, those who had lost theirfaith or had been separatedfrom the Church.

Devotional Use The Green Scapular should beblessed by a priest and worn orcarried by the person wishing tobenefit by it. To help another person in needof grace, the Green Scapularmay be placed secretly insidehis clothing, home orpossessions, and the givershould say the prayer instead. Pray, at least daily: "ImmaculateHeart of Mary, pray for us nowand at the hour of our death."

Brief Biography ofSr. Justine Born 11 November 1817 atMauleon; little is known abouther childhood, but that she wasraised by an aunt and uncle. Entered the Seminary of theDaughters of Charity on 27November 1839, the ninthanniversary of the apparition toCatherine Labouré. After nine months in theSeminary, she was sent toBlangy to teach school. It wasat Blangy that she had the mostimportant apparitions andprepared to make her HolyVows.

Brief Biography ofSr. Justine (cont’d) In 1841, during the CrimeanWar, Justine cared for the sickand wounded on the battlefieldsin Constantinople. In 1858, shehelped open a military hospitalat Rennes. Next she went toanother military hospital inAlgiers where she remained fornine years until 1867 when shewent to serve with the PontificalArmy for one year. In 1868, shewas made sister servant (age51) at the Hôtel-Dieu ofCarcassone where sheremained for 35 years until herdeath on 23 September, 1903.
