The first building wasconstructed in 1931. Eastern’s doors were not opened tostudents until 1934.The institution operated as a two-year college from1934 to 1940. The third and fourth years of college werefirst offered in 1940. ENMU was accredited by the NorthCentral Association of Colleges and Secondary Schoolsas a four-year liberal arts college in 1947. Graduate workleading to the master’s degree was added in 1949, and theinstitution was officially designated Eastern New MexicoUniversity in 1955.Established in 1948, ENMU-Roswell moved to itspresent facility (formerly Walker Air Force Base) inthe fall of 1967. ENMU-Roswell offers a wide variety ofprograms for students in eastern New Mexico.ENMU-Ruidoso opened in 1991 and offers both anacademic and a vocational curriculum.Location and ResourcesThe ENMU main campus of more than 400 acres islocated in Portales on the extreme eastern side of thestate, about halfway between the northern and southernboundaries. It is 90 miles northeast of Roswell, NewMexico, 120 miles southwest of Amarillo, Texas, and 120miles northwest of Lubbock, Texas.Portales, the county seat of Roosevelt County, has anelevation of about 4,000 feet and a population of about19,900. Winters are dry and mild, and summers arepleasant with cool nights. Like most of the Southwest,Portales enjoys bright sunshine all year. Daytime hightemperatures in summer are in the 90s, while winterlows are in the 20s. Annual precipitation is about 16inches, most of which comes in summer thunderstorms.The valley in which Portales is located is a fertilearea excellent for farming and ranching. The entireeastern part of the state produces crops such as ValenciaPeanuts, wheat, grain sorghum, corn, alfalfa, potatoes,and cotton. Dairy and cattle production are principalindustries in the county. Petroleum-related industries,grain, grain storage and shipping, and trucking are alsopresent in Roosevelt County.5One of the world’s most important Paleo-Indianarchaeological sites lies on the plains of eastern NewMexico just seven miles north of Portales. An abundanceof artifacts has been found in this area, and it is theconsensus of archaeologists that these discoveries tellof life 11,000 to 11,670 years ago. In connection with thisarea, known as Blackwater Draw Locality No. 1 site, ENMUoperates and maintains both the Blackwater Draw NationalHistoric Landmark and the Blackwater Draw Museum.Students learn aspects of museums, museum work,museum studies, archaeology and anthropology throughexperiential work here. Eastern also houses the RooseveltCounty Museum, the Miles Mineral Museum and the Dr.Antonio “Tony” Gennaro Natural History Museum.The ENMU-Portales campus has approximately 56buildings and structures centered about a pedestrianmall. Roosevelt Hall and the Science Building housethe science teaching and research laboratories wherestudents receive hands-on experience with a widevariety of modern scientific instruments.The Broadcast Center is located in the CommunicationBuilding and is home to Eastern New Mexico University’sstate-of-the-art digital radio and television studios.Students studying in the field of communication have theopportunity for hands-on experience in the operation ofthe University’s broadcast stations, where they can workclosely with the professional staff in creating programsfor both radio and television. KENW-TV providesboth entertainment and educational programmingto the general public, to area public schools, and tohomeschoolers. During the regular school year, KENWTV produces at least five different weekly TV programs,evening newscasts, and various special productions. Thenewscasts are produced by students under the directionof the KENW-TV news director. Students also assist withother KENW-TV productions.The TV station is an affiliate of the PublicBroadcasting Service (PBS), the National EducationalTelevision Association (NETA), and AmericanPublic Television Stations (APTS). With digitaltechnology, KENW-TV can broadcast four channelsof TV programming 24/7/365. Digital Channel 3-1is the station’s High Definition channel; Channel3-2 is a Standard Definition Channel (SD) that feedsprogramming to some 25 cable companies in easternNew Mexico and parts of West Texas. Channel 3-3 (SD)is KENW-TV’s Children/Encore service, with programsfor youngsters being broadcast from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. andencore programs for adults from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. thenext morning; Channel 3-4 carried the First NationsExperience (FNX) network which is programming forand about Native Americans and other indigenouspeople in the world. KENW-TV has a full-power digitaltransmitter located at the old Blackwater Draw Stadiumsite on Highway 70 between Portales and Clovis and nineother digital translators scattered around the easternside of the State of New Mexico. In addition, DirecTVrebroadcasts KENW-TV’s Channel 3-1 and Dish Networkcarries KENW-TV’s Channel 3-2 for their subscribers tomost counties in the State of New Mexico.

The FM station can beheard throughout the entire eastern side of New Mexicoand parts of West Texas. KENW-FM has six full-powerFM transmitters and seven TV translators scatteredthroughout the eastern half of the state of New Mexico.KENW-FM is also available worldwide via the internet.The Golden Library, housed in the Golden StudentSuccess Center (GSCC), holds a collection of books,videos, CDs, United States and New Mexico governmentdocuments, and serves as a resource to the entire region.Automation and networking agreements provide accessto many journals and to the resources of most of theworld’s libraries. The library computer labs providestudents with word-processing and presentationsoftware as well as Internet access. Special Collectionscontains the University archives, historical photographs,oral histories, and the world-famous Jack WilliamsonScience Fiction Library. This library features the books,magazines and manuscripts of science fiction writer JackWilliamson, as well as the works of other authors. GoldenLibrary is the repository for the papers of New Mexico’sCongressman Harold Runnels. The library houses over300 works of art and is used as a laboratory for studentslearning to mount exhibits and operate an art gallery.The University Theatre Center houses a 420-seatproscenium theatre and a 150-seat experimental theatrespace. Next to it is the University Computer Center,a facility with modern student computer labs andtechnologically equipped classrooms.ENMU-RoswellEstablished in 1958, Eastern New Mexico UniversityRoswell is a dynamic academic and career-orienteduniversity. The ENMU-Roswell campus offers certificatesand degrees in academic and career/technical programs.Each semester, ENMU-Roswell provides educationalopportunities to students through a variety of creditand non-credit classes and numerous communitypartnerships. Selected bachelor’s and master’s leveldegree programs are also available online and onsite from the main campus in Portales. A full range ofcareer advising services are available, in addition to acustomized training program (Center for Workforce andCommunity Development) for business and industry anda unique program for students with disabilities.More than 100 courses are taught online eachsemester.
