Kayaking may be for you!All four sessions will be on beautifulLake Robinson in Greer. Day one willconcentrate on equipment, safety, fittingyou to your kayak, and basic strokes withsome in-water practice. In subsequentsessions, there will be more time on thewater to allow you to perfect the basicstrokes and gain confidence. Therewill also be demonstrations of moretechniques to make your on-water timeeasier, safer, and more comfortable.Kayaks, life jackets, and paddles will beprovided. We will visit fourrelatively flat walkable areas with pavedtrails: Furman’s Swan Lake Loop, ConesteeNature Preserve, Cleveland/Falls Park andthe soon to be opened Unity Park. Thewalks will be about 4-5 miles at a relaxedpace. We will stop for lunch at about the1/2 way point in each walk.Peter Sperry is an avid hiker and walkerwho enjoys sharing the trails with others.PAH821 Beginning PokerTuesday, 1-3 p.m., ZThis is a beginner’s class designed forpeople who have never played poker. Wewill start at the very beginning explainingthe hand rankings and betting and playingrules. You will learn some very basicguidelines for determining your chancesof getting certain poker hands to help inyour betting strategy. We will learn somebasic poker etiquette rules and will playa different variation of poker each week,including Texas Hold’em, 5 card draw, 7card stud, and many more. This class is notdesigned to get you ready to play seriouspoker at a casino for money, but just achance to make all your beginner pokerplayer mistakes and have your fellowbeginners laugh right along with you! SNM1009 The Next Fifty Years ofSpace ExplorationTuesday, 1-3 p.m., Herring Center,Piper (HC111), HThis course will review projects currentlyunderway, under development,suggested by science/engineeringliterature and science fiction in theseareas: the future of rocketry, to orbit andbeyond with focus on the disruptorslike Elon Musk; commerce in spaceincluding space stations, space tourism,solar electric stations; exploring themoon, Mars, asteroids and ice moons;astronomy instruments findings andunknowns; and conflict in space andmilitary space. A world-wide view willencompass the efforts of USA, Russia,Europe, China and others. The lessonswill include extensive collections ofimages and video illustrating theinformational content. The goalof this class is to build familiarity andcomfort with these rhythms using oureyes, ears, voice and movement. We willuse popular tunes and simple walkingdances from the Balkans and Turkey(where these uncommon rhythms arecommonplace) as well as a few Westernexamples. Our goal is to have youleave the class with added confidencein your ability to take your kayaking toHFE510 Peter’s Slow Hiking:Intermediate Hikes, Slower PaceWednesday, 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m., HerringCenter, Parking Lot (rt. of Timmons), IPThis group is for those who enjoymoderately challenging hikes butwould prefer to take their time to enjoythe scenery and rest along the way.The hikes will be mostly intermediatehikes with 1-2 easy and 1-2 advanced.The target zone will be 4-8 miles with300-1,200 feet elevation changes, butat a relaxed pace. Pace will be set bythe speed of the slowest hiker and willinclude rest breaks after steep inclinesas well as frequent photography andcomfort stops. Hiking locations willrange from Pisgah National Forest in theNorth to Chattooga River in the southbut will generally be within a 30-90minute drive from Furman. Hikers shouldplan on starting from the trailhead9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and returning to thetrailhead between 3 and 4 p.m. Thismay require leaving the Herring Centerparking lot as early as 8:30 a.m. andreturning as late as 5:30 p.m. Everyeffort, except rushing the slower hikers,will be made to finish earlier but slowhiking does take longer.Peter Sperry is an avid group and soloday hiker who enjoys challenging trailsat a leisurely pace.Please note class formats: Z Zoom, IP In-person or H Hybrid3

Soonmillions gathered to honor Charles andhis new copilot and wife, Anne, as theyflew across the world. The world wasgalvanized once again, reacting to themidnight kidnapping of two-year-old son,watching as Charles became immersedin the trail of ransom notes and ransompaid, the location of the slain child, thetwo-year hunt for the culprit, the arrest ofBruno Hauptmann and another two-yearmadness of his trial and execution. Werelate that in 1938, Lindbergh was askedto inspect German air power as Hitlerrearmed Germany. He saw Germany asoverwhelming as compared to Frenchindifference and British obsession with thepast. He wanted the United States to haveno part in European conflicts. He was still“Lindy,” the hero, but we will listen to hisoutspoken and unpopular isolationism,coupled with an underlying antisemitismthat led President Roosevelt to labelLindbergh as a “defeatist and appeaser.”Anne Morrow Lindbergh once held similarviews but over time, as Lindbergh, adistant but dominant father to his wife andfive children, spent months on the road,she came to flourish and her best seller“Gift from the Sea” spoke to the need forwomen to seek roles outside the stricturesof tradition. SNM1097 How Airplanes FlyThursday, 10 a.m.-noon, Herring Center,Piper (HC111), IPThe major objective of the course isto present students with a generalfamiliarization of how large aircraft fly.The course is intended for an audiencethat is “well-traveled” on domestic/international commercial flights who havea curiosity for how the amazing machinesget you safely where you want to go. Thecourse will begin with the basics, how amassive aircraft gets off of the ground,how they keep you comfortable andsafe in the hostile outside environmentat 40,000 feet, how they navigate toyour destination. Included will be ananatomy of a typical airliner, the basics ofaerodynamics and jet engine propulsion.We will cover major systems, such asnavigation and environmental control.The course will familiarize students withthe FAA certification process and keyfeatures in an aircraft design that keeppassengers safe in the event of sometype of failure during flight (enginefailure, emergency landing, etc.) Thesubject matter will be presented in easyto-understand, non-technical format.David Kostyal had a 40-year career in theaircraft industry, starting as a licensedmechanic/instructor, then progressingto operations management for a majorairline. For example if you set outto photograph garden plants in thecontext of the garden hardscape, youwill develop ideas for additions to yourgarden.
