ATAR FOR TERTIARY ENTRY10

What is the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR)?Primary mechanism used nationally for tertiary admissions.Indicates a student’s position relative to other students.2,000 point scale from 99.95 down to 0.00.ATARs less than 30.00 will be expressed as ‘30 or less’.Will be calculated by QTAC for entry into courses in 2021.Is the new standard pathway to tertiary study in QLD.

The Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) and the ATAR(Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) are different and have adifferent purpose. For questions about the QCE,including assessment and subjectresults, please contact QCAA(Queensland Curriculum &Assessment Authority) atwww.qcaa.edu.auQCEATARCertifies learning, showing theindividual has achieved a specificstandard of education at seniorschooling level and may beconsidered by employers and thegeneral community.Tells us about a student’s position (orranking) compared to all otherstudents in the state. The onlyintended purpose for the ATAR is toassist with selecting applicants fortertiary study.

ATAR Eligibility Requirements5 GeneralSubjectsOR4 GeneralSubjects pluseither: Appliedsubject CompletedCertificate IIIor HigherLevel VETQualification

English – Compulsory SubjectStudents must successfully complete one ofthe following: English English as an Additional Language English & Literature Extension Literature Essential EnglishSuccessfully complete ‘C’ lettergrade or higher. No specific subjects are mandatedinclusionsin the ATAR.Don’t forgetNot all QTAC applicants are 2020Year 12 school leavers

QCE Units of Study as ATAR Inputs Results are added together at the completion of Units 3 and 4 of each subjectThis will lead to the overall raw subject result to be provided to QTAC for scaling, and fromwhich the ATAR will be calculated.Impact of COVID-19: For 2020 Year 12s, QCAA has reduced the number of internal assessment pieces for units3 and 4. This change will not impact the calculation or release of Year 12 ATARs. QTAC willcalculate the ATARs from the student results files provided from the QCAA.

How will VET be included in the ATAR?Each VET qualification levelwill have a single scaledscore that can be includedin the student’s ATAR.For example, Cert III inHospitality and Cert III inLab Skills will have the samescaled score, regardless ofduration or content.A scaled score for a VETDiploma will be higher thana Certificate IV, which in turnwill be higher than aCertificate III.IMPORTANT: VET qualifications must be recorded as completed in a student’s QCAA learning account to be included in16the ATAR calculation.

Scaling - Overview Scaling is necessary so that student resultsin different subjects can be compared fairly. Each state in Australia uses a scalingprocess in the calculation of the ATAR. InQld, subject results are scaled by QTAC. The process involves adjusting the “raw”subject results for a given subject to allowresults for that subject to be fairly comparedwith the results from any other subject. Uses some complex mathematics tounderpin the process

How will 2020 Qld Year 12s know their ATARs? The ATAR will be communicatedto eligible Year 12 students usinga purpose-built ATAR portal. Current Year 12s can open theirATAR account with QTACwhen admissions open on 4thAugust. This includes studentswho wish to study interstate. The ATAR will be released at9am on 19 December 2020 thesame day and time as the QCAAResults. The ATAR release is an onlinerelease ONLY. There will be afacility to print the results notice.

International Baccalaureate (IB) Students: The process for calculating a tertiary entrance rank for IB students remainsunchanged. This means IB students do not need to register for the ATAR PortalIt is a 2- step process to assess yourIB results:STEP 1 - We convert your IB score inthe completed diploma to a 'combinedrank’ according to the rules agreedAustralia wide.

STEP 2 - We then convert your combined rank to aQTAC selection rank. To help IB students understand the rank that willbe used in the assessment of their QTACapplication, they can refer to the IB Score toCombined Rank conversion table on the QTACwebsite.See accalaureate-ib-studies.NB: The conversion table will be updated and available on the QTACWebsite by 4 August for students completing their IB in 2020.

OP to ATAR conversionFor the 2019–2020 admissions period, offers were made for the last time based on an OverallPosition (OP).This is reported as the ‘Lowest OP offered’ in the course entries in the QTAC Guide andonline through Course Search. In 2020, ATAR will replace OP as the standard pathway totertiary entry in Queensland for 2021 admissions. There is no possible direct translation of OP to ATAR because the two are derived fromdifferent sets of information and by different statistical methods. As a rough guide, the table on the right provides details of the lowest ATARs awarded withineach OP band for OPs awarded in 2019. *Online CalculatorsQTAC does not endorse or support the use of “ATAR calculators” due to the changingnature of the student cohort from year to year. ATAR calculators do not use currentdata so cannot accurately predict a student’s ATAR.*Using ATAR information provided by the QCAA.

Research your coursesDue to institutional responses toCOVID-19 a number of Open Days havebeen cancelled or moved to onlineevents. Please check our website or theindividual institution website for up-todate information.
