RCC Faculty Senate NewsletterVol. 17Dear RCC Facultyand Staff,For anyone who has not been following thenews, you should be aware there have been anumber of recent racist attacks against the blackcommunity in our country. The murders ofBreonna Taylor and George Floyd by police inKentucky and Minnesota and the murder ofAhmaud Arbery by civilians in Georgia havebeen some of only the most recent events in along history of racial injustice in America. Andwhile Kentucky, Minnesota and Georgia might begeographically distant from us here in SouthernOregon, the pain and tragedy of these and otherinstances of racism have a profound impact onall black Americans. As part of our responsibilityand care for our students and campuscommunity, we must make sure we aresupporting our black students and colleagues. Iencourage everyone to reach out to your blackstudents and colleagues to see how they’redoing during this difficult time and what, ifanything, you can do to support them. Also be aware that support means more thancaring about racial issues in just this moment- itmeans doing the hard work of anti-racism andachieving racial equity all year-round. Theburden of anti-racism work needs to be on uswhite faculty and staff, and not on our racialminority students and colleagues.June 3, 2020Here are someresources for this important work:Eight Actions to Reduce Racismin College Classrooms: acism-collegeclassrooms#.XtFrwplrzcsThe Anti-Racism Toolkit from theAssociation for PreventionTeaching and Research: acist Resources List fromStonehill College: https://libguides.stonehill.edu/c.php?g 932637&p 6722393(While these links won’t workwithout an access code, the listprovides information on somegreat resources that can be found/accessed elsewhere)Teaching Tolerance: Self-GuidedLearning for Educators: self-guided-learning(While this is geared primarilytowards K-12 educators, there’smany things that could be usefulfor the college level)Jenny Shirley, MSN, RNNursing InstructorEnd of 2019/2020 academic year3
