Seek local informationabout what to take, and allowenough time for the journey. Bookaccommodation, transport andtransfers to the start/end oftrack early.2. Tell someone your plans. Safetyis your responsibility. Leave yourintentions – including your tripdetails and emergency contactinformation – with a trustedcontact. It could save your lifeif things go wrong. Head tomountainsafety.org.nz for moreinformation.3. Be aware of the weather.New Zealand weather is verychangeable. Plan for theworst, expect the best. Checkmetservice.com for the most upto date info.4. Know your limits. Always followthe track markers and signpostedtracks. Off-track navigation is notrecommended for novice walkersin New Zealand. A good level offitness is required to walk thetrack. You can expect to walkup to 6 hours a day dependingon your fitness level. If you getinto trouble don’t make a badsituation worse. Think STAR –Stop / Think / Assess / React.5. Take sufficient supplies. WithNZ’s changeable conditions manyhikers are frequently caught outby isolated local conditions.Carry – and expect to use – rainjackets all year round. Take anextra day’s supply of food andan emergency shelter. Don’t relyon cellphone signal alone forcommunication. Food and drinksare not available to purchase atGreat Walks huts or campsites.Plan to be self-sufficient.Lake Waikaremoana safety This track is not recommendedfor children under age 10,because of the exposedmountainous environment andoften adverse weather conditions.
