Plywoodwith a 3 or 4 back grade can havea back surface of a different speciethan the front surface.Plywood SurfaceGrain PatternsThere are two ways to influence theplywood surface grain pattern -- bythe types of veneer cuts, and veneermatching during the glueing process.Veneer Cuts: Depending on themanner in which a log is cut, strikingly different visual effects can beachieved with the wood’s grain andcharacteristics. Two logs of the samespecies, cut in different ways willproduce distinctive veneers.ROT (Rotary Cut): The entire logis cut or “peeled.” It can yield fullsheets of veneer with broad grainpattern.PS (Plain Slicing): The flitch, withthe heart side against the slicer tableis cut parallel to a line through thecenter of the log.RC (Rift Cut): A cut angle of 15 degrees to the radius of the flitch (halflog) is used to minimize the ray flakeaffect in oak.QS (Quarter Slicing): This methodprodcuces a series of stripes -straight in some woods, varied inothers. Most species have the samelook as rift cut.
