PRAYERS FOR ALL OCCASIONSForewordTherewidespread uneasiness and dissatisfaction among Christian people in respect of theirprayers. Some have even given up praying altogether because they "get nothing out of it"; andmany would be ready to confess that they do notget the help from their prayers they would Hke togetthat they feel they ought to get. Prayer withthem is a habit rather than a recognized and provedis—meansTheof grace.reasons for this are various, but thereone in particular whichisundoubtedly common. Here is a personal note from one who had foundout where his own trouble lay.isthat my prayer life was not what it shouldprayers were loose, haphazard, unarranged.often than not, I felt the need of forgivenessfor the casualness and insincerity of my praying. And then one day I found where the trouble lay. Itwas just that I was not going the right way aboutit.prayers were not properly ordered: I hadnot given any thought to them before I got on myknees. I was not making of my prayers a solemnand deliberate act of worship./be.knewMyMoreMyThereare,ofcourse,times in everyone'slifewhen prayer cannot wait to be organized momentswhen prayer is the anguished utterance of a break:ing heart, or the formless cry of the soul for graceand courage to live through the next twenty-fourhours. No plan of prayer will serve then. But normally people do need a plan, a method of devotion;they need to have a clear idea both of what theyare going to pray for and of what order theirprayers will follow: what shall come first, and soforth. They also need prayers ready to hand fromwhich they can make a sort of cycle of prayer fora week or a month, so they will not be repeatingthe same prayers day after day until they have become monotonous, and perhaps unreal.

—It is hoped that this book of Prayers For AllOccasions will help to meet this personal need, and also provide material for use in prayer groupsand occasional evening services in Church. As a help to private prayer we ofler on page 9a suggested plan for morning and evening devotionswhich covers fairly well the elements of which suchprayers should be composed. But no plan can besatisfactory unless preparation is made beforehand;and for the profitable use of the prayers in thisbook, the pages should first be found on whichfor personal graces, forthose we want to use arethe sick, for missions, etc. In this way, we can makeour prayers both ordered and real.—The Amen is used in this book only when theprayers are intended for corporate use. It is a hturgical ending and has no place in private prayer. We have also omitted the usual Christian endingthrough Jesus Christ our Lord from most of theprivate prayers, since it is sufficient if this is saidat the close of the act of devotion.—This bookBishop.isissuedwith the approval of thePresiding
