Getting a Job in HR: How to Get Your Foot in the DoorShelly Trent, SPHR, SHRM-SCP, CAE, JCTC, JCDC

Meaning of thePhrase “GettingYour Foot in theDoor” Alludes to people selling things fromdoor-to-door and blocking the doorwith a foot so it cannot be closed onthem. Today, it means that you mustbreak through the barriers oftrust to network withprofessionals. Door-to-door salesmen were nottypically trusted, so it was difficult forthem to get an opening. Now, it refers to sellingYOURSELF as a product! Selling things like knifes, vacuumcleaners, food, soaps, medicine (snakeoil), encyclopedias, etc. . . . Thingsmany did not want to buy. The nice thing for you, however, is that you don’tactually have to knock ondoors! Use your HEAD to getin, not your FOOT!
