* Repainting workmanship as reported by the inspector5 New: This is an original factory repair. It is perfect, flawless and thereare no imperfections. It cannot be duplicated.4 Above average: This is a serviced body panel that has been properlyrepaired, replaced and or repainted. The finish is very good and withoutany imperfections.3 Average: This is the average commercial body shop repair seen onmost vehicles. It is usually well received by most consumers, mostly dueto its good even repair and color blending. This is a good repair that willcontain up-close cosmetic imperfections, which may include some paintoverspray on the trim, and/or an orange-peel appearance from heavypaint application.2 Below average: This repair has workmanship that has less attention todetail. The paint has considerable areas with imperfections with one ormore of the following, but not limited to; obvious dirt particles, fish-eyespots, paint-runs, paint drips, orange peel look, body filler with deepsanding marks, uneven or warped body panels, misaligned panels andobvious over-spray and tape lines. It may be considered acceptable ifdoes not cause an issue with the operation of the vehicle.1 Very poor: This is the repair that was done with a total lack ofprofessional experience, equipment and or supplies to complete the taskin a proper way. It was done with the most minimal expense andexpertise. It may be a partial repair or an attempt to just keep it togetherand the cost to properly repair may be higher as a result. Ratings are specific to the condition of the paintwork and exteriorrefinished areas and panels only. It does not apply to structural repairs,undercarriage items, or areas that are not be exposed. This is basedsolely on the inspector’s visual observations.

It is measured inthousands of an inch. (Ex. 3.0" equals 0.0030 inches). Theamount of paint does not mean a different quality finish. Thequality (4-3-2-1) is determined solely by the inspector based onseveral factors including lighting, weather, dirty vehicles, orother hazardous conditions.Repaired panels have a higher reading with the addedrepainting. While replaced panels may have a lower reading.The original thickness varies between manufacturer andvehicles. The fact that vehicles are typically painted at one timeduring the manufacturing process, it would be expected thatmeasurements are consistent across several panels. Somedifferences will apply, to include, but not limited to, plastic orrubber panels, bumpers, and/or doors, or fenders that arepainted at a different location within the factory. The meter doesnot operate on fiberglass, rubber, or plastic materials.
