The Ultimate Guide toTop High School Summer ProgramsDr. Michele Hernández & Mimi DoeAudioIncluded!180 pages of amazing opportunities! The best ways to spend your summers!

INTRODUCTION FROM MIMI & MICHELESummer opportunities are an important way to enrich your life, as well as strengthen your collegeapplication. What you do during your summer vacations will give admissions counselors an idea of whatkind of person you are and what you care about. Use your summer experiences to explore an academicinterest, deepen a talent or passion, strengthen your skills in a particular subject, or immerse yourself inanother culture by learning the language and studying the literature. This guide will provide you with a starting point for finding a summer program, but you should alwaysspend time researching your own opportunities. As one college admissions counselor put it, “it is often inthe best interest of the students [to] create the unique opportunity for themselves 'general’ summerprograms [do not] add to applications of top students,” these students “need to seek out exceptional, directed opportunities.” What that means is that by going ‘above and beyond’ and creating an opportunityfor yourself rather than just paying for a luxury trip to learn Italian in Italy shows initiative and a studentwho seeks out ways to quench their love of learning.Dr. Jeff Brenzel, prior Dean of Undergraduate Admissions at Yale University, gave an interview in whichhe commented on the importance of an applicant’s summer choices:We encourage students to make use of their summers in the way they find most interesting. If they undertake a specificprogram, it should be because it appeals strongly to them, not because they imagine it will look best on a resume. We alsohonor and value summer jobs; for many students they are necessary and for others they can be just as important a learningexperience as anything else. What’s important to us is not what you chose to do for the summer, but what you got out of it.Parents and students often ask us for the “number one summer program,” as if by attending this “magic”program a student will be guaranteed Ivy League admission. It doesn’t work like that, as you can tell byDr. Brenzel’s quote above. The goal is to take your interests a step further during the summer and deepenyour academic theme or niche. Remain true to yourself, however, rather than selecting something youthink college admissions officers want to see. What they want to see is YOUR ongoing interest and actionin a particular area – how you’ve gone above and beyond. We have selected the programs and opportunities listed in this guide based on our experience over thepast 20 years with students going to top colleges and Michele’s experience in the Dartmouth admissionsoffice. Things do change. Many schools such as Harvard, Yale, Cornell and Brown have added onlinesummer pre-college courses to allow students from anywhere to take part in classes. We share that infohere.Remember, when you apply to college you will SHOW what you did during the summers by listing youractivities on the application – our students prepare an additional condensed Activity Sheet. You want toselect summer programs, classes, and opportunities according to YOUR focus so you have depth displayedin your application.Admissions committees read thousands of applications and in order for yours to stand out it helps to havea “hook” or focused interest that runs through all of your materials (transcript, essays, activity sheet, andrecommendations). Summers are a great time to strengthen your “hook” or unique focus: talent, interest, academic passion, etc. When an admissions officer reads your application the “hook” will jump off thepage and then be supported throughout the rest of your application. Again, this is an authentic interest ofyours and the goal is to find something this summer to deepen that interest. We’ve had students who havefocused on a particular author, for instance, and studied that author in depth through college level classes, Top Tier Admissions All rights reserved www.TopTierAdmissions.com1

independent studies, and even traveled to the author’s birthplace to research. We’ve had kids interested indebate who have furthered that skill in summer debate programs and we’ve had athletes who have spentthe summer before their senior year attending elite sports camps led by coaches from the schools to whichthey hoped to be recruited while taking community college courses in their area of academic interest. Many students write for their high school newspapers, but when they spend summers attendingjournalism programs or writing for their local papers or winning journalism awards then they become“journalists” in an admission’s officers eyes. You have plenty of excellent programs to choose if you cannot afford an expensive internship or travelingto another country. Bill Fitzsimmons, Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid at Harvard University, notedin an article that high-priced internships can be “wonderful experiences,” but “they will not give a studentan advantage in the admissions process because the playing field is not level.” Instead of traveling abroadwhich has become commonplace, according to Gil Villanueva, Dean of Admissions at Brandeis University, students should show that they have “a desire to contribute to society” by being active in his or hercommunity. Think of how you can become a “high impact” student this summer and truly it doesn’t meanbooking a flight to Africa to help the needy. Use your initiative and combine various local opportunities. The programs we have listed are well thought of—they aren’t the mass mailing marketing ploys that try tocon you into plunking down lots of money because you are a “High Achiever.” Beware of those offers. Theyhave names that make you think you are being selected and are special, but check the depth of theprogramming! They are similar, in our experience, to the Who’s Who among American High SchoolStudents. They sound official and appear to be honoring you, but in actuality they are simply buyingnames and throwing out a wide net of flattery in the hopes of selling something. The New York Timescovered this topic in an article called: Congratulations! You Are Nominated. It’s an Honor. (It’s a SalesPitch.)So, dive into this guide and start your own page of brainstorming ideas. We have picked out the best of thebest available summer opportunities, but they are in no way the last word. Some of these programs arequite competitive and require an application with essays and recommendations by early February. This isa great prelude to writing your college essays. Ask one of your teachers if he/she would mind taking a lookat the essay before you send it in. These essays matter. Take the applications seriously and focus on youracademic interests. And, of course, the more competitive a program, the higher impact in admissions. Many of our Top Tier Admissions students have forged their own rich summer opportunities by contactingprofessors at local colleges or universities to offer their research skills, founded their own websites basedupon a personal passion, taught themselves a new language, or simply worked at their local Starbucks toearn money for the school year while pursuing their scholarly interests locally. We’ve included informationin this guide on finding a job as well, which is always looked upon favorably by admissions officers—andyou will list this work experience on the Common Application. You can combine real work experience witha college level class for a varied and rich summer and have a college transcript to send to colleges whenyou apply.Check the websites of all listed programs to receive updated information, such as program dates andapplication cut-offs. These are ever-changing and you want to make sure you have the most recentinformation. All best,Mimi & Michelewww.TopTierAdmissions.comP.S. We have created a 15-minute audio for you to go along with this guide and are including a bonus giftof our 60-minute virtual workshop on creating a compelling summer.
