Freehand LetteringDeveloping good lettering isa personal skill which takespractice. Letters must beformed properly. They must be open shapedvery legible.Clearcommunicationisessential to avoid mistakesand reduce waste.Lettering may be done usinga drafting type pencil, leadholder or technical pen.Which ever tool is used, theletters must properly formedand very black

Freehand LetteringPull the pencil or pen acrossthe paper. All letteringstrokes should be a pullingmotion.Right-handedandlefthanded drafters may have todevelop different styles forforming letters.Press down hard when usinga pencil.

Freehand LetteringVertical capital letters are preferred for mosttechnical work. They are formed within a 6 by 6grid.

Straight Line lettersMost letters are slightly narrower than they aretall. The shapes of the letters are as open aspossible. Letters with small loops and crossingstrokes are avoided

Straight Line lettersThis sequence is recommended to assure thateach letter is the correct width in relation inheight. For example, form the two vertical sidesof the “H”, “N” and “M” first. Form the top of the“T” first.

Straight Line lettersThe “H” and “N” are slightly narrower than theyare tall. The “T” and the “M” are just as wide as theyare tallNote: Proportion: width vs. height is veryimportant in forming letters.

LetteringThe style of engineering lettering wewill use in this course is Single StrokeGothic Lettering Notice that only capital letters aredemonstrated, since we will use onlycapital letters on drawings
