8Alternative Cancer RemediesImportant: Read This FirstThere is no such thing as a cancer cure. There never has been one, there never willbe one. A “cure” means there is certaintythat the disease is gone. Then why was this book written? It wasprepared to help scientists and researchersdevise ways to move us closer to solutionsto the cancer problem. But there are “remedies” for cancer! Thereare lots of them! Purported remedies of all kinds. You will find a remarkable number described infair detail in this book. Why are they providedhere? So medical investigators can wanderthrough the halls of this labyrinth of possibilities—and, hopefully, someday provide uswith official government approval of a technique that really does accomplish the task. There is no cure for cancer. It is larger thanany remedy. It is the result of a way of life, serious deficiencies which can vary for each person,a variety of environmental food poisons. No remedy can be devised which solves allthe problems. No claimed system of treatmentin this book (over 50 are listed in Part Two) includes all the preventive factors (of which overtwo hundred are listed in Part One). There is no place where you can buy the complete system. There is no package containingthem. There is no doctor dispensing them. The cancer problem is the result of the totallife of an individual; and each individual hasflaws, needs, and problems unlike those of anyone else.We recently heard of a nationally known individual who privately tried all types of naturaldiets, etc., but it was not until he added magnesium, in still larger amounts, that he had remission from cancer. —Yet magnesium is only oneof dozens of possible factors! Everyone is different! Then there is the Christian mother who, encountering cancer, became something of an expert in vitamins, minerals, juices, and greendrinks. Yet she died. We later learned that, ev-eryday, she poured half a cup of vegetable oilonto her salads.Just little things, like not enough magnesiumand too much oil; but it all adds up.The cancer problem, its length, its depth, its recoverability, is part of a person’s way oflife. What does this book do? It leads the researcher to lots of problems, and points themtoward many helpful factors. It also provideseveryone else with ideas to help prevent cancer in the first place. The many formulas (methods used in thepast to eliminate cancer) are provided to helpsimplify the researchers’ work. For the same reason, lists of addresses of various alternative cancer organizations are given at the back, so researchers can find sources of supplies and additional formulas. Through those addresses, theycan also locate physicians, primarily outside ofAmerica, who are regularly working with alternative remedies. Rather than fighting one another, let us get our heads together—and solvethese problems! But this book will also be fascinating tohistorians and students of medical lore. Theamount of controversy—and downright war—which has taken place in the cancer field isunbelievable. It is a fascinating subject. Are any of these treatments successful? Thatis a question to be pondered by the students ofhistory and solved by the medical researchersfor whom this book was particularly written for.In PART ONE of this book you will find anextensive listing of information which earlierresearch has shown, in laboratory and clinical studies, to be preventive and reductionfactors. In PART TWO are the remedial systems, each one frequently claiming to be the answerto cancer. Are they really cures? Hardly. By farthe greater number are narrowed programs: Asingle chemical, a combination of three or four

9Read This firstherbs, or a special procedure is touted as thefinal solution. Yet the narrowed therapies generally do not provide long-term recoveries. The problem is that the systems in PartTwo generally omit the factors listed in PartOne. In addition, most of the systems ignorethe best of the other systems. As a result thepatient’s entire way of life is not radically altered.Yet, in research laboratories, men andwomen continue to search for that single magicbullet which will wipe out the malignant plague.—We plead with the researchers, physicians, and cancer organizations to finally startputting the pieces in the remedy puzzle together! The solution is not in just finding morepieces.Let us bring together the abundance offacts that we already have. It is the belief ofthe present writer that the researcher will findmany of those factors in this ————WARNING: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO TREATYOURSELF! You are to be advised that a variety of governmental agencies recommendagainst your attempting to do this.Having said that, although this is not aself-help recovery book, it can, with greatprofit, be used as a means of prevention. Youwill find the nutritional and lifestyle information in Part One to be of special value.Carefully read through its pages, reread themand glean out ideas which you can use to improve your health! Efforts to improve yourphysical health and stamina are recommendedby every government agency in the land. Theywant strong, healthy citizens who can strengthenthe nation, work hard, and make it more prosperous. It is the fervent wish of the author, that thiswill help many maintain good health for a longerperiod of time.— Vance FerrellABBREVIATIONSCertain abbreviations appear in thisbook:ACS The American Cancer SocietyFDA The Food and Drug AdministrationNCI The National Cancer InstituteNIH The National Institutes of HealthSKI The Sloan-Kettering Institute for Cancer ResearchAMA American Medical AssociationOTA Office of Technology AssessmentOther less frequent abbreviations include:AAAS The American Association for theAdvancement of ScienceCCS The California Cancer SocietyHEW The U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (which more recently hasbeen split into other departments)MSKCC The Memorial Sloan-KetteringCancer CenterUSDA The U.S. Department of AgricultureUSDHHS The U.S. Department of Healthand Human ServicesNAS The National Academy of SciencesCaution: The information presented in these chapters is not to be used in anymanner in the non-professional treatment of cancer, nor should people withcancer attempt to undertake any of these methods. 10Alternative Cancer RemediesAlternative Remedies and CongressLater, in Part Two of this book, you willread about more than fifty alternative treatments for cancer.Over the years, the ongoing battle overthem has sometimes led to congressionalhearings. But one such case resulted in alaw by the U.S. Congress, mandating thatresearch studies be undertaken to verify existing alternative methods of treating cancer or produce new ones. This law resulted from two facts which, inthe course of years, had become very obvious:First, the orthodox methods of treating cancer (surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation) rarelyextend life more than one to three years.Second, when alternative methods have beenproposed, many of which seem to produce remarkable success, they have generally beenhounded to death by the major cancer organizations. Here is how the law came about:In July 1985, the National Cancer Instituteand certain other U.S. agencies managed to getthe Bahamian Health Department to close Dr.Lawrence Burton’s Immuno -AugmentativeTherapy (IAT) Centre, located in Freeport, GrandBahama Island. When that happened, a large number ofwealthy cancer victims, who had been takingtreatment at Burton’s hospital, were aroused toa white-hot anger. They demanded that the U.S.Congress take action. Guy Molinari, a New Yorkcongressional representative, with the help of 38other representatives, moved on Congress to request the Office of Technology Assessment (OTA)to investigate Burton’s IAT.Although the original request was for the testing of IAT, it was later expanded into a full-scaleevaluation of alternative cancer remedies. Thisinvestigation resulted in the longest, most expensive, and most controversial study that OTA everproduced.John Gibbons, OTA director, summarizedthe reasons for the study in these words:“To thousands of patients, mainstreammedicine’s role in cancer treatment is not sufficient . . The attractiveness of unconventionalcancer treatments may stem in part from theacknowledged inadequacies of current medically accepted treatments, and from the too frequent inattention of mainstream medical research and practice, to the wider dimensionsof a cancer patient’s concerns.”—Office of Technology Assessment, Congress of the UnitedStates, Unconventional Cancer Treatments,September 1990.In the request, John Dingell, chairman of theU.S. House of Representatives Committee on Energy and Commerce, asked that the followingpoints be covered in the OTA study: The types of uncoventional cancer treatments most available to Americans. How people gain access to unconventionaltherapies. Costs and means of payment. Profiles of typical users of unconventionaltreatments. Legal issues. The potential for increasing our knowledgeabout the efficiency and safety of these cancertreatments. The OTA study began in 1986 and continued for four years. Throughout that entire time, charges of bias, conflicts of interest, and coverups were hurled back and forth by various interests. Finally, in 1990, the 312-page report was released to Congress. The Associated Press headlined the story, “Federal Study Urges Testing ofUnconventional Cancer Treatments.” But opponents denounced it as “bad science” and “biased research.”The OTA report called on Congress to provide funds for research into alternative cancermethods. Based on that report, the National Cancer Institute, which receives the largest portionof government funds, was told by Congress to

Alternative Remedies and Congressbegin such an investigation.More than a year later, Congress learned thatthe NCI had ignored the directive. So, on November 22, 1991, Congress passed a law creating the Office of Alternative Medicine as a branchwithin the National Institutes of Health. The budget set aside for the first year of thenew Office of Alternative Medicine was 2 million. That was not large (the NIH receives over 3 billion annually), but it clearly revealed theintent of Congress. All this was the result of intense lobbying, bycitizens, and hard work spearheaded by earnest, dedicated congressmen, led by Guy Molinari,John Dingell, and Tom Harkin. Before concluding this brief chapter, itis well to note another significant eventwhich occurred in Washington, D.C. in recent years. For decades, thousands of Americans hadto travel to foreign countries, to obtain alternative medical treatment or supplies for a varietyof life-threatening diseases, including cancer.Upon their return to America, their supplies, drugs, etc., were, if found, seized and confiscated. Shipments made through the mail weretreated in the same manner. But, when AIDS came along, the gay community exerted tremendous political pressure—11and succeeded in obtaining what no one else inAmerica had been able to accomplish. Theywanted to easily purchase AIDS drugs, not otherwise available in the U.S., by mail from overseas. On July 20, 1988, during a speech at theTenth National Lesbian and Gay Health Conference and AIDS Forum, Frank Young, the administrator of the Food and Drug Administration, announced a major change in FDA policy.Henceforth, Americans could import smallquantities of drugs and other alternative medical substances from foreign countries for personal use. This was a major breakthrough. Individuals would be permitted to import through theirpersonal baggage small quantities (up to athree-month’s supply) of medicines they hadpurchased while traveling abroad. In addition, those persons who had serious medical conditions could import a three-month’s supplyof such items through the mails.Young said the new policy had been madespecifically to help AIDS patients, but that itwould apply to drugs and other substancessought by Americans with any disease. So it is now legal for cancer patients toimport up to a three-month supply of any ofthe alternative cancer therapies from a foreign country.Humanity cries out for a solution to thecancer problem. At the present time, 100 billion is beingspent, worldwide, on cancer therapy everyyear.Researchers are needed to solve thisproblem for us.This book has been written so thatresearchers will provide us with usable,government-approved remedies—whichactually work.

Verily, just as serpents close theireyes, so do men close their eyes to the light oftruth.”—Galileo Galilei (1564-1642), Letter toJohannes Kepler, c. 1630.“As long as providers make their income andfame largely by delivering ‘rescue’ medicine, theywill have less economic interest in prevention.”—Paul Mencel, M.D., in Medical Costs, MoralChoices.“It is more important to know what sort ofperson has a disease, than to know what sort ofdisease a person has.”—Hippocrates (460-377B.C.)“To regain health once it has been lost weneed to begin to reverse some, and ideally all, ofthose processes which may be negatively impacting us, and over which we have some degree ofcontrol.”—Leon Chaitow, N.D., D.O.“Unless we put medical freedom into theConstitution, the time will come when medicinewill organize into an undercover dictatorship . .To restrict the art of healing to one class of menand deny equal privileges to others will constitute the Bastille of medical science. All such lawsare un-American and despotic and have no placein a republic . . the Constitution of this republicshould make special privilege for medical freedom as well as religious freedom.”—BenjaminRush, M.D., Signer of the Declaration of Independence, Physician to George Washington, from The Autobiography of Benjamin Rush.“A search of the Medlars’ Data Base at theNational Library of Medicine shows that, since1966, three have been 12,896 studies on vitamin C, of which 5,546 deal with humans, and7,043 studies on vitamin E, of which 3,205 dealwith humans.“In total [of all the studies on vitamins], threeprobably have been more than 75,000 studieson nutrients now being consumed as dietarysupplements. Many of the studies provide thekind of evidence that would persuade anyone.”—Saul Kent, President, Life Extension Foundation.“I am personally convinced that many ofthese scientists and practitioners are not ‘quacks’. . but really are good scientists working on goodscientific theories. Unfortunately, we have a society and a system which says that anybody doing anything new or different is a quack.”—Berkeley Bedell, former Iowa congressman andMember of the National Institutes of Health Alternative Medicine Evaluation Panel.“The art of healing comes from nature andnot from the physician. Therefore the physicianmust start from nature with an open mind.”—Paracelsus (1493-1541).“After the initiation of the cancer process, thedisease will often lie undetected for manyyears.”—American Institute for Cancer Research.“Sixty percent of all cancers in women and40 percent of all cancers in men may be due todietary and nutritional factors.”—National Academy of Sciences.“Environmental toxicity is one of the mostimportant areas of cancer causation and cancerprevention, and it is yet to receive adequate recognition from the cancer research establishment.”—Samuel Epstein, M.D.“The essential premise of alternative medicine is that healthy bodies do not develop cancer, and that cancer is a reflection of the body asa whole, rather than a localized disease in oneparticular part of the body.”—Ernesto Contreras,M.D.

BACK COVER 19.95The information presented here will help those desirousof improving their health—so they can prevent cancerfrom gaining a foothold in their bodies.Because it discusses many anti-cancer substances andformulas, this book is especially written for medicalresearchers and historians. It also contains many fascinating stories of pioneers incancer research over the past century and a half.It is important that you be told that this book has notbeen written for cancer patients, those who already have thisdread disease, or laymen desirous of treating it. The AMA,NIH, NCI, and SKI have determined that anyone whohas contracted cancer should see his or her physician.Special dietary programs: Bulkley, Chase, Richardson, Kowan,Contreras, and more.Special herbal formulas: Essiac, Hoxsey, Kloss, Winters,Montagna, and more.Special mono herbs: Chaparral, Comfrey, Echinacea, Goldenseal,Red Clover tops, Mistletoe, Pau d’arco, and more.Special clinical treatments: Revici, Urea, Immuno-augmentative,Anablast, Hydrazine sulphate, Clodronate, Hydrogen peroxide,Photoluminescence, Antiplastons, Laetrile, Gerson, and more.Special nutritional factors: Vitamin A and beta-carotene,selenium, Vitamin C, potassium, Omega-3, Abscisic acid, Niacin,Germanium—132, and more.Hundreds of lifestyle changes which can help prevent cancer.Changes you can begin making right now—before you contractcancer—so you will be far less likely to have problems later. This book is written for medical researchers and historians, and those interestedin preventing the initial development of cancer.Warning: It is not written for those wanting to treat cancers already in place.

13IntroductionTYPES OF CANCERCancer is a terrible disease. This yearalone, over half a million Americans will diefrom it. One out of every three persons willdevelop cancer in their lifetime. Throughout the industrialized world, the figures arejust as bleak.Cancer is characterized by uncontrolledgrowth and spread of abnormal cells. If thespread is not controlled, it can result in death.Every cell in the body is able to become cancerous; and, everyday, many cells in your bodybecome cancerous. But, normally, your immunesystem, at work in a body strengthened by goodnutrition and good living habits, overcomes thosemalignant cells and eliminates them.Although there are over a hu
