Our most important product: Our customers’ statisfactionWe are among the leading manufacturers for rolling bearings, linear technologycomponents and steering systems worldwide. We can be found on almost everycontinent – with production facilities, sales offices and technology centres – becauseour customers appreciate short decision-making channels, prompt deliveries andlocal service.EuropeThe Americas4HeadquarterJapanAsia

The NSK CompanyNSK commenced operations as the first Japanese manufacturer of rolling bearingsback in 1916. Ever since, we have been continuously expanding and improving not onlyour product portfolio but also our range of services for various industrial sectors. In thiscontext our worlwide research and production facilities are linked together in a globalnetwork. Here we concentrate not only on the development of new technologies, but alsoon the continuous optimisation of quality – at every process stage. Among other things, our research activities include product design, simulation applications using a varietyof analytical systems and the development of different steels and lubricants for rollingbearings.More about NSK under: www.nskeurope.comTrademarks: All NSK product and service names listed in this catalogue are trademarks or registered trademarks of NSK Ltd.5

Care and maintenanceHow to handle bearingsRolling Bearings are high precision machine parts and need to be handled carefully.24Keep Bearings AndSurroundings Clean!Handle With Care!Protect BearingsFrom Corrosion!Use Proper Tools!

Importance of proper fitsIn the case of a rolling bearing with theinner ring fitted to the shaft withinsufficient interference, a harmfulcircumferential slipping may occurbetween the inner ring and shaft. Thisslipping of the inner ring, which is called„creep”, results in a circumferentialdisplacement of the ring relative tothe shaft if the interference fit is notsufficiently tight. When creep occurs, thefitted surfaces become abraded, causingwear and considerable damage to theshaft.housing. Creep cannot always be eliminatedusing only axial tightening throughoutthe bearing ring faces. Generally, it is notnecessary, however, to provide interferencefor rings subjected only to stationary loads.Fits are sometimes made without anyinterference for either the inner or outerring, to accommodate certain operatingconditions, or to facilitate mounting anddismounting. In this case, to preventdamage to the fitting surfaces due tocreep, lubrication or other applicablemethods should be considered. It is important to prevent creep by havingsufficient interference to firmly securethat ring which rotates to either shaft or25

Mounting of Cylindrical Bore Bearings with interence fitBearing rings should not be subjected to direct impact – use a tubular driftor hydraulic press! Always apply the mounting force to the correct ring!Fitting bearing into housingFitting bearing to shaftSleeveHousing40Sleeve

Damage can occur if the mounting force is applied to the incorrect ring during assembly. In particular, the balls or raceways may become indented, also known as ”brinelling“.41

Mounting of Cylindrical Roller BearingsEnsure that the bearing is correctlyaligned to the shaft/housing.42Avoid shock loading on theinner/outer ring ribs.

Fractured rings, due to shock loading during fitting43

Shrink fitsShrink fitting is often used to avoid thelarge force involved in press fitting largebearings. For shrink fitting, the bearingsare first heated in oil, or in an inductionheater, to expand them, then mounted andallowed to cool. This amount of expansionof the inner ring for various temperaturedifferences and bearing sizes are shownin Fig. 1.Some precautions should be consideredwhen using shrink fits:- Do not heat bearings above 120 C- Put bearings on a wire netting or suspendthem in the oil tank to prevent them fromtouching the tank bottom.- Heat bearing to a temperature 20 to 30 Chigher than the lowest temperaturerequired for mounting, because the innerring will cool a little during mounting.44

Shrink fitsAfter mounting, the bearings will shrink in the axial direction as well as the radial directionwhile cooling. Therefore, while mounting, press the bearing firmly against the shaft shoulderto avoid excessive clearance between the bearing and the shoulder.46

Mounting of Spherical Roller Bearingson adapter sleeves1. With bearing on bench check clearanceusing the feeler gauges over the top ofthe rollers at the top of the bearing asshown in Fig. 1 and note the clearance.4. Open the sleeve slightly by insertingand twisting a screw driver into the slitin the sleeve and position the sleeve onthe shaft.2. Before mounting, smear the thread andthe side face of the nut with a molybdenum disulphide paste or similar lubricant.5. Slide bearing, lockwasher and locknutonto sleeve and tighten nut with a ‘C’spanner until all slackness is removed.3. Smear the shaft and outside diameter ofsleeve with a light oil.486. Further tighten the nut until the clearancehas been reduced by the amount shownin the chart on pages 54/55 but when thebearing is mounted on the shaft theclearance should be checked under therollers at the bottom of the bearing asshown in Fig. 2.

7. Check the clearance has not been reduced below the minimum permissibleresidual clearance shown in the charton pages 54/55 for the size and clearance of bearing.8. Align one tab on the lock washer witha slot in the locknut and bend it intothe slot, if no tabs line up with the slotsslightly tighten the locknut until onelines up. Never back off the nut to lineup the tab with the slot.9. Check the bearing rotates freely withoutany binding.49

Mounting of Spherical Roller Bearingson an adapter sleeve using the Axial Drive-Up Method1. B efore mounting, smear the thread andthe side face of the nut with a molybdenumdisulphide paste or similar lubricant.2. Smear the shaft and outside diameter ofsleeve with a light oil.3. Open the sleeve slightly by inserting andtwisting a screwdriver into the slit in thesleeve and position the sleeve on theshaft.4. Slide bearing, lockwasher and locknutonto sleeve and tighten nut with a ‘C’spanner until all slackness is removed.525. Measure dimension ‘X’ as shown in Fig. 3.6. Tighten the nut and decrease dimension‘X’ by the amount of axial drive-up shownin the chart on pages 54/55 for the correctsize of bearing.7. Check bearing clearance as shown onpages 50/51 to ensure the clearance isnot less than the minimum permissibleresidual clearance shown in the chart onpages 54/55 for the size and clearance ofbearing.

8. Align one tab on the lock washer witha slot in the locknut and bend it intothe slot, if no tabs line up with the slotsslightly tighten the locknut until one linesup. Never back off the nut to line upthe tab with the slot.x9. Check the bearing rotates freely withoutbinding.Fig. 353
