We’ve created this guide to help you:What the PSAT 10 MeasuresThe PSAT 10 is focused on the skills and knowledge atthe heart of education. It measures: What you learn in high school. What you need to succeed in college and careertraining. Become familiar with the test so you’re notsurprised or confused on test day. Learn the test directions. The directions foranswering the questions in this guide are the sameas those on the actual test. Review the sample questions. Using This GuideHow the PSAT 10 Is ScoredHow the PSAT 10 Is ScoredAll multiple-choice questions are scored by giving one point for each correct answer. Nopoints are subtracted for incorrect answers or for answers left blank. Hard questions countthe same as easier questions. You won’t lose any points for guessing, so try to answerevery question. There’s also some helpful advice about when totake the SAT.Scores will become available based on when yourschool tests. If your school tests in February or March,scores will be available online by mid-April, and paperscore reports will be sent to schools in May. If yourschool tests in April, scores will be available onlineby mid-May, and paper score reports will be sent toschools in May and June. If you haven’t received yourscore report by late June, see your counselor. Yourschool will be able to print a copy for you.

The PSAT 10 office will sendyou instructions.Test Security andFairness PoliciesCollege Board’s Test Security and Fairness policiesare designed to give every student a fair and equitableopportunity to demonstrate their skills and knowledge.They’re also designed to prevent anyone from gainingan unfair advantage on College Board tests. When youtake the PSAT 10, you acknowledge that you have read,understand, and will comply with our Test Security andFairness policies as detailed here. You must present acceptable photo ID for admissionif any school staff member asks you to. Allowing someone to impersonate you to take aCollege Board test, or engaging in impersonation totake a test for someone else, is strictly prohibited. Creating a disturbance or failing to followinstructions given by testing staff is prohibited. On Test DayPhones and Electronic Devices Policy Using phones and certain other electronic devicesis prohibited in PSAT 10 test sites. Staff at yourtest site may collect devices such as cell phonesand smartwatches before testing begins. If you areobserved with such a device after collection occurs,you will be dismissed from testing and your scoreswill be canceled. You are prohibited from accessing secured testmaterials at any time before or after the test. If you exit the building before testing ends, yourscores may be canceled. While you’re taking the test, do not allow anyone tosee the test questions or your answers. The timing of each test section is strictly scheduled.You cannot skip ahead or go back to a previoustest or test section in the test book or answer sheetwhile taking the PSAT 10. You may not consult notes, other people, electronicdevices, or any other resources during the test orduring breaks. Calculators may not be shared, and may only be onyour desk during the parts of the PSAT 10 they’reapproved for. All students in your school must take the test atthe same time. (Exceptions may be approved forstudents with disabilities.) If you become ill or must leave during the test, orif for any other reason you do not want your testscored, you may ask the proctor or test coordinatorto withdraw your answer sheet from scoring beforeyou leave the testing room. After you leave thetesting room, if you decide to withdraw your answersheet from scoring you must report your decisionimmediately to the test coordinator or the PSAT 10office. (See the inside front cover for contactinformation.) Members of your household may not serve asPSAT 10 coordinators or in any other role thathas access to test books before test day, evenat a different school, during the testing period(February–March or April) that you take the test. Aproctor may not administer the test to their child ora member of their household. You may not discuss the contents of the testwith anyone, or share them through any means,including but not limited to emails, text messages,and the internet.Violation of policies related to test security can resultin denial of entry to or immediate dismissal from thetest site, cancellation of your scores, or a limited orpermanent ban from any College Board assessment,including the SAT, SAT Subject Tests , and theAdvanced Placement exams.102020 PSAT 10Student GuidePlease read the PSAT 10 Terms and Conditions later inthis guide for important information about your rightsand responsibilities as a test taker.Phones and ElectronicDevices PolicyDevices that can be used to document or communicatetest content or answers are not allowed at the testsite. You may not bring electronics of any kind otherthan approved calculators with you on test day (anexception may apply for medically required devices).If, however, you forget to leave a device at home, you’llbe instructed to turn off all electronic devices. Thestaff in your testing room may collect cell phones andwearable technology before the test begins. Be sure toturn off your phone and/or watch alarm, if you have oneor both.If your device makes noise after having been collectedby the proctor or stored away from your desk inaccordance with school policy, you will get a warningand be told to turn it off. However, if it makes noisewhile in your possession or you are seen with it at anytime, including during breaks, you will be dismissedimmediately, your scores will be canceled, and thedevice may be kept and its contents inspected. CollegeBoard is not responsible for loss of or damage topersonal items, including electronic devices, whileyou’re at the test site.College Board regularly bolsters its security efforts inorder to protect the integrity of the test and ensure afair PSAT 10 administration. From time to time, CollegeBoard, Educational Testing Service (ETS), and itstesting staff may employ enhanced security measures,such as the use of metal detecting wands to detectmobile phones and other electronic devices. Test takersshould be prepared to undergo these security measuresto ensure a fair testing environment.Depending on your school’s policy, the testadministration staff may be authorized to collect andhold phones and other prohibited electronic devicesduring the test administration, including break periods,or to deny admission to anyone in possession of aprohibited electronic device.Taking the TestTesting Guidelines Plan ahead and bring equipment that’s in goodworking order. Testing staff might not have extrabatteries or calculators.

Protecting Your Privacy: Use of Student Information When marking answers: Use a No. 2 pencil with a soft eraser on allparts of the answer sheet. Do not use a pen ormechanical pencil. Make sure you fill in the entire bubble darklyand completely. Erase any changes you make as completely aspossible. On the PSAT 10, there’s no penalty for guessing;you simply earn points for the questions youanswer correctly. Try to give your best answer toevery question—there’s no advantage to leavingthem blank. Use a watch to time yourself—no separate timersor alarms are allowed, as they distract other testtakers. Choose a watch that doesn’t have advancedcommunication or recording features (these are notallowed). Don’t skip sections, and don’t leave your answersheet blank. Doing this could result in scorecancellation and/or delays. Store any snacks or drinks you bring out of sightin a paper bag under your desk. You may only eatsnacks during breaks. The testing staff will tell youwhere you can go to have your snack. If you’re testing where the staff doesn’t know you,keep your ID with you at all times, especially if youleave the testing room.Calculator RulesYou can only use certain kinds of calculators, asexplained in the Math Test portion of this guide. Hereare the other rules to bear in mind: You can’t share your calculator. If you use your calculator to share or exchangeinformation during the test, or to remove testquestions or answers from the test room, you’ll bedismissed and your scores canceled. If you’re using a calculator with a large (charactersone inch high or more) or raised display that mightbe visible to other test takers, the proctor may moveyou to another seat.Protecting Your Privacy:Use of Student InformationCollege Board recognizes the importance of protectingyour privacy. See collegeboard.org/privacy-policy forcomplete data privacy information.College Board collects personal information only toadminister tests and deliver educational opportunities toOn Test Daystudents. College Board lets students and families decidehow much additional information they disclose beyondthe minimum information needed to connect studentswith college success, including taking the PSAT 10.On the answer sheet, we ask students for their name,school information, student ID number, grade level,gender, and date of birth. We may also ask for otherinformation, including address, email address, andmobile phone number. Sometimes, schools, districts,or states will give us students’ personal informationto register the students for College Board tests.Schools may share students’ names, addresses, datesof birth, and gender, and in certain circumstancesother information about students to help CollegeBoard determine if they qualify for fee waivers.Students provide any remaining personal informationthemselves.We only share student information for educationalpurposes (or under court order) as follows: We share scores with you, your school, and,if applicable, your district and/or state to helpmeasure educational progress and support astudent’s path to college. (Homeschooled students’scores won’t be shared with the school thatadministers the test.) If students request it, we use their information tosend customized college planning information. We share a limited amount of personal data withour partners for test administration support,customer support, and to support scoring andreporting activities. On our website, we use student information tocustomize and personalize the content users see,such as important reminders about PSAT 10 testdates and college-planning milestones. We share de-identified student information withresearchers so they can study it for College Boardprograms and services that help solve educationissues. Students’ use of Khan Academy practice resourceswill be governed by the Terms and Conditions onthe Khan Academy website.See more Privacy Policies later in this guide.Telemarketing ScamsWe sometimes get reports of phone scams when callersposing as employees of College Board try to sell testpreparation products or request sensitive, personallyidentifying information, such as credit card and SocialSecurity numbers. College Board does not makeunsolicited phone calls or send emails to students orfamilies requesting this type of information. After Test DayTest Fairness ReviewAfter Test DayTest Fairness ReviewAll new PSAT 10 test questions and completenew editions of the tests are reviewed by external,independent educators from throughout the UnitedStates. These reviews help ensure that the questionsare unambiguous and relevant and that the languageused is not offensive to or inappropriate for anyparticular group of students based on race/ethnicityor gender. Assessment staff ensure that the test as awhole includes references to men and women as wellas to individuals from varied racial, ethnic, and culturalbackgrounds. Statistical procedures are used to identifyquestions that are harder for a group of students toanswer correctly than would be expected from theirperformance on other questions in the test; thesequestions are excluded from appearing on tests.Test Question InquiriesIf you find what you consider to be an error or anambiguity in a test question, tell the test coordinatorimmediately after the test.
