PSAT 10 ScoresSpecial OpportunitiesWhat Scores Will I Receive?The College Board has partnered with severalorganizations who provide millions of dollarsin scholarships to qualified low-income andminority students. Help them find you by optingin to Student Search Service when you take thePSAT 10. These organizations include:Your score report will include a total score,section scores, test scores, cross-test scores,and subscores — all of which will give youbetter insight into your performance. Onceyou get your paper score report, visitstudentscores.collegeboard.org to learn moreabout what these scores mean.The score report will also show the correctanswers, the answers you gave, and the difficultylevel of each question. In the Next Steps section,you will see a message about your potential forsuccess in AP courses based on your scores.There is also some helpful advice about when totake the SAT.If you have not received your score report bymid-May, see your counselor. Keep the following points in mind aboutStudent Search Service:Telemarketing and Internet ScamsColleges participating in Student Search Servicenever receive student scores or phone numbers.Colleges can ask for names of students withincertain score ranges, but your exact score is notreported.Being contacted by a college doesn’t meanyou have been admitted. You must submit anapplication in order to be considered for admission.The colleges and organizations that participatewant to find students who fit in with theirenvironment, classes, programs, scholarships,and special activities. Student Search Service issimply a way for colleges to reach prospectivestudents like you and inform them of availableopportunities.Student Search Service will share your contactinformation only with colleges and qualified nonprofit educational or scholarship programs that arerecruiting students like you. Your name will neverbe sold to a commercial marketing firm or retailerof merchandise or services (such as test prep).Student Search Service communications aresent by outside colleges, scholarship programs,and educational opportunity organizations. Some of these callers engagein illegal spoofing to make it seem as if the call iscoming from the actual company. These calls donot come from the College Board. The CollegeBoard does not make unsolicited phone callsto students or families requesting this typeof information. This type of activity, knownas telemarketing fraud, is a crime. Should youreceive an unsolicited phone call from someoneclaiming to work for the College Board, includingwhere your Caller ID indicates that the telephonenumber originates from a College Board location,do not provide the caller with any personalinformation.If you provide your phone number on your answersheet, representatives of the College Board willonly call or send text messages to you and yourfamily in response to inquiries generated by you,to provide or gather information about a test orprogram for which you registered or to invite youto participate in free college planning services.Should you have a question about the origin of aphone call you have received in which the callerclaimed to be from the College Board, contact thePSAT 10 office (see inside front cover).Safety and Security TipsStudent Search Service andProtecting Your PrivacyAll entities who receive student information fromStudent Search Service are required to maintainstrict confidentiality. We actively monitor theseentities to ensure adherence to our guidelines.The frequency and mode of communicationis determined by the entity that receives thestudent’s name. Every communication fromindividual entities is required to contain specificinstructions on how to unsubscribe from thatparticular institution. Be wary of unsolicited contacts, whether viatelephone or email.2. Students with DisabilitiesFor students with disabilities, the College Boardprovides testing accommodations such as brailleand large print test books and extended timeoptions. If you have a disability and have notalready been approved for accommodations bythe College Board, it is important to speak to yourcounselor or teacher right away to determineif a request for accommodations needs to besubmitted. If so, your school’s SSD Coordinatorcan assist you in requesting the accommodationsthat meet your needs.You are not allowed to use protractors;compasses; rulers; cutting devices; earplugs;scratch paper, notes, books, dictionaries,or references of any kind; pamphlets; pens,mechanical pencils, highlighters, or coloredpencils; listening, recording, copying, orphotographic devices; or any other aids. Youmay not bring food or drink (including bottledwater) into the test room, unless preapproved formedical reasons.You may not use cell phones or other prohibitedelectronic devices during the test or breaks.Prohibited devices include, but are not limitedto, cellphones or smartphones; audio players/recorders, tablets, laptops, notebooks, or anyother personal computing devices; separatetimers of any type; cameras or other photographicequipment; any devices (including smartwatches)that can be used to record, transmit, receive,or play back audio, photographic, text, or videocontent. Power must be turned off, and thesedevices must be placed under your desk. If yourwatch has an alarm, you must turn that off aswell. If your phone makes noise, or you are seenusing it at any time (including breaks), you willbe dismissed immediately, your scores will becanceled, and the device may be confiscated andits contents inspected.You may not give or receive assistance or disturbothers during the test or breaks.You cannot skip ahead or go back to a previoustest section while taking the PSAT 10.You may take the PSAT 10 only once each schoolyear. If you begin a test, you are considered tohave taken it.All PSAT 10 test-takers in your school must takethe test at the same time. (Read about specialarrangements and testing accommodations forstudents with disabilities on this page.)If you become ill and/or must leave during thetest, or if for any other reason you do not wantyour test scored, you may ask the test supervisorto destroy your answer sheet before you leavethe testing room. After you leave the testingroom, any decision to withdraw your answersheet from scoring must be reported immediatelyto the test supervisor or the PSAT 10 office. (Seecontact information on the inside front cover.)You may not discuss the contents of the testwith anyone else, or share them through anymeans, including but not limited to emails, textmessages, and the Internet, until after scorereports have been distributed.After the accommodations request has beensubmitted, it may take approximately sevenweeks for you to receive a decision letter. If youare approved for accommodations, save thisletter because it also indicates your eligibilityfor accommodations on other College Boardtests, such as the SAT and Advanced PlacementProgram (AP) Exams. With limited exceptions, theaccommodations will remain in effect until one yearafter your graduation. If you move to a new school,ask your counselor at your new school to transferyour SSD online record.Test RegulationsStandard rules and regulations give all studentsthe same opportunity and prevent any studentfrom having an unfair advantage. When youtake the test, you will be asked to copy andsign a Certification Statement stating that youwill abide by these regulations, so read themcarefully. Also read about grounds for scorecancellation on page 5. Failure to follow thesetest regulations or any instructions given bythe test supervisor may result in your scoresbeing canceled.4You must mark your answers on the answersheet. You will not receive credit for anythingwritten in the test book. You may not leave theroom with your test book. You may use only yourtest book for scratch work (unless approved foran accommodation).You may use an approved calculator (see“Acceptable Calculators,” page 24) only duringthe Math Test – Calculator portion of theassessment, you may not have a calculator onyour desk during the Reading Test or the Writingand Language Test, and you may not share acalculator during the test or during breaks. Youmay only use one calculator at any given time —if you brought a second one for backup, it mustbe kept under your desk.PSAT 10 Student Guide: Important Information about Taking the PSAT 10

Members of your household or immediatefamily may not serve as PSAT 10 supervisors,coordinators, or proctors, even at a differentschool, on the date that you take the test.Use and Distributionof Scores and StudentInformationStudents may be dismissed from the testing roomand their answer sheets may be destroyed ifthey fail to follow test regulations or instructionsgiven by the test supervisor. Once answer sheetsare submitted for scoring, ETS reserves the rightnot to score the answer sheet of a student whoengaged in misconduct or was involved in atesting irregularity.ETS reserves the right to cancel scores if thereis reason to doubt their validity. Before acting,ETS will inform the student of the reasons forquestioning the scores and will give the studentan opportunity to provide additional information,to confirm the scores by taking another PSAT 10,or to cancel the scores. The student may alsorequest arbitration in accordance with ETS’sStandard Arbitration Agreement. If before,during, or after a review of questionable scores,ETS finds that misconduct has occurred inconnection with a test, these options willnot be available even if previously offered.Score reviews are confidential. If it is necessaryto cancel reported scores, ETS will notify scoreusers, but the reasons for cancellation will not bedisclosed. This policy does not necessarily applyin group cases.When you take the PSAT 10 and sign the answersheet, you acknowledge that you understandhow your scores and personal information will beused.The College Board will receive the scores ofstudents who take the test as well as informationstudents provide on their answer sheets.Some schools, districts, and states receive PSAT 10scores with other information about their students.In addition, scores for students who qualifyfor programs described in the section “SpecialOpportunities” are reported to those programs.The PSAT 10 administration does not report scoresto colleges or commercial entities.If your school participates in the PSAT 10through a bulk registration process, the CollegeBoard may receive your personal information,including first name, last name, sex, date ofbirth, and mailing address, from your school.This information will be kept secure and addedto your permanent College Board record to beused for score reporting purposes as well as theother purposes that are outlined in this guide andin registration materials. By taking the PSAT 10and signing the PSAT 10 answer sheet, youacknowledge that your school has provided thisinformation to the College Board and consent tothe College Board retaining this information.Grounds for ScoreCancellationTo report scores that accurately reflectperformance, ETS, on behalf of the CollegeBoard, maintains test administration and securitystandards designed to give all students the sameopportunity to demonstrate their abilities andto prevent any student from gaining an unfairadvantage because of testing irregularities ormisconduct. ETS reviews irregularities and testscores believed to have been earned underunusual circumstances.Test Fairness ReviewAll new PSAT 10 test questions and completenew editions of the tests are reviewed byexternal, independent educators from throughoutthe United States. These reviews help ensurethat wording or content are unambiguous andrelevant and that the language used is notoffensive to or inappropriate for any particulargroup of students based on race/ethnicity orgender. Assessment staff ensure that the test asa whole includes references to men and womenas well as to individuals from varied racial, ethnic,and cultural backgrounds. Statistical proceduresare used to identify questions that are harderfor a group of students to answer correctly thanwould be expected from their performance onother items in the test; these questions areexcluded from appearing on tests.Questioning a Test QuestionIf you find what you consider to be an erroror ambiguity in a test question, tell the testsupervisor immediately after the test. Evidence-Based Reading and WritingThe Evidence-Based Reading and Writing sectionis composed of two tests that assess differentbut related skills and knowledge. The ReadingTest gives you a chance to show how well youunderstand what you read. The Writing andLanguage Test asks you to revise and edit text.Tips for the Reading TestTo answer each question, consider what thepassage(s) say directly, and use careful reasoningto draw supportable inferences and conclusionsfrom the passage(s). The best answer to eachquestion is derived from what is stated or impliedin the passage(s) rather than from prior knowledgeof the topics covered.
