Education and Economic Development Act “Gaps between students’ preparation and the requirements of thereal-world leave many students unable to find good jobs andmany businesses unable to find workers qualified to help themsucceed.” “To bridge the gap, the state leaders drafted the Education andEconomic Development Act (EEDA), which Gov. Mark Sanfordsigned into law in May 2005.” “The EEDA sets a system called Personal Pathways toSuccess to help South Carolina students and businesses meetthese challenges.”7/17/20072

Education and Economic Development Act The EEDA calls for the creation of:– Regional Centers– Initiatives to lower dropout rates– Programs to help students develop a body of classwork that will achieve their post-graduation goalsthrough the development of an IndividualGraduation Plan7/17/20073

Education and Economic Development Act Each student’s Individual Graduation Plan (IGP)requires:– Post-graduation goals– Core academic courses– Selection of one or more specific areas of academicfocus. The state has organized professions into 16 clusters ofstudy.7/17/20074

Education and Economic Development Act Career Clusters are courses of study organized arounddifferent sets of occupations. An Individual Graduation Plan (IGP) enables Counselors,Parents and Students to develop a course plan that helps thestudent achieve their desired career path. Students select a career direction in the 8th grade. Students are required to declare a major in the 10th grade. Student IGPs will be evaluated annually. Freedom to choose a different career path is always available.7/17/20075
