Steel Sheet PileSteel Sheet PileSteel sheet piles are interlocking, corrugated structural sections that are used to form a continuous retaining wall. The walls are used to retain either soil or water. The ability of a sheet pile section to perform is dependent upon itsgeometry and the soils it is driven into. The pile transfers pressure from the high side of the wall to the soil in frontof the wall.Nucor Skyline supplies a wide variety of sheet pile from leading manufacturers. Hot rolled steel sheet pile and coldformed steel sheet pile are two primary methods of manufacturing sheet pile. While there are differences betweenthese two methods, the most important distinction is the interlock. Since hot rolled steel sheet piles are producedfrom steel at high temperatures, the interlock tends to be tighter than its cold formed steel sheet pile counterpart.Normally, looser interlocks are not recommended in extremely hard driving conditions or for walls requiring lowpermeability. Otherwise, the two types of sections perform similarly in most applications.Applications of Sheet PileAround the world, Z-pile, named for its shape, is used for various applications, both permanent and temporary.Temporary sheet piles provide safe access for construction and are then removed; however, they are sometimesleft in place. Cofferdams and support of excavation are two of the most common forms of temporary structures.Permanent sheet piles remain in the ground and serve as permanent retaining structures such as, leveestrengthening, retaining walls, breakwaters, bulkheads, and environmental barrier walls. In addition to thesetraditional applications, steel sheet piles are also used to take combined vertical and lateral loads for bridgeabutments and underground parking garages.Bending strength and stiffness are the primary design considerations of sheet piles. Durability of the section, especially in permanent salt water applications, must also be taken into account. Drivability of the sheet pile is oftenoverlooked and can control the selection of the sheet.Flat sheet piles (straight web sheets) are used in the construction of cellular structures. Cellular cofferdams areutilized to dewater large areas during the construction of locks and dams and are also employed as permanentwalls when loads are exceptionally high or there is little or no soil for embedment. Large embedment is generallynot necessary, since the cells are gravity structures and the tension is resisted by the interlock. Unlike Z-pile orcombination walls, interlock strength is the main design consideration for cellular cofferdams. The weight of the celland the resistance of the flat sheet interlocks provide the stability of the structure.Handling HolesHandling holes are standard for allsheet pile sections. They are locatedin the centerline of each section.Y 6" (152.4 mm)Ø 21/2" – 25/8" (63.5 mm – 66.7 mm)Z-Sections(NZ, PZ, AZ, SKZ/SCZ)Straight Web Sections(PS, AS)HZ -M Sections

Combined Wall SystemsCombined WallSystemsCombined wall systems are used when regular sheet piles are not strong enough to carry the required loads. Thetwo main components of a combined wall system are the king pile (HZ -M or pipe) and a pair of intermediary sheetpiles. The connector is the third component and is welded to or interlocked with the king pile and connects the kingpile to the sheet pile. The intermediary sheet piles transfer the soil and water pressures to the king piles, which carrymost of the load. The sheet piles are usually shorter, varying from 60% to 100% of the length of the king piles. Theking piles are often designed to carry substantial vertical loads in addition to the normal bending loads. There are a wide variety of HZ -M and pipe solutions which give the designer a great deal of flexibility. Each typeof system, beam and pipe, has their own advantages. The HZ -M system is fully interlocking and does not rely onany welded connections. The HZ -M system also has a shallower depth than the pipe system which reduces theencroachment into waterways. The Pipe-Z system has a much greater range of strengths than the HZ -M systembecause of the very large pipes that can be manufactured for the system. It also usually has higher strength toweight and stiffness to weight ratios than the HZ -M system. Whichever system is chosen, the engineer can restassured that both systems have proven themselves on large infrastructure projects around the world.Applications of Combined Wall SystemsCombined wall systems provide an ideal solution for applications such as: large capacity retaining walls with deepexcavations, breakwaters, deep cofferdams, and other structures that require retaining walls to resist large loads.

Nucor Skyline supplies a wide variety of sheet pile from leading manufacturers. Hot rolled steel sheet pile and cold formed steel sheet pile are two primary methods of manufacturing sheet pile. While there are differences between these two methods, the most important distinction is the interlock. Since h
