BMW Servicemaintenance “reminder” system helps ensurethat the vehicle inspections and maintenanceservice tasks are performed at the forecastedintervals that apply to your vehicle.BMW recommends you have your maintenanceand repair work performed by an authorizedBMW center. The BMW Maintenance System display providesthe vehicle operator access to the current statusinformation for the following maintenance servicetasks: Engine oil (date and miles) Vehicle check (date and miles) Front brake pads (miles) Rear brake pads (miles) Brake fluid (date) 1,200 Mile running-in service (miles;applicable to BMW M vehicles only)Maintaining Your BMW VehicleA well-maintained vehicle will help safeguard itsoperational performance, road-safety and itsreliability. This is why it is important to follow andperform BMW’s recommended periodic vehicleinspections and maintenance service tasks asindicated by your vehicle’s Maintenance ServiceDisplay, along with the other maintenance workdescribed in this booklet.Damage, including consequential damage, which results from lack of or impropermaintenance is not covered under the BMW NewVehicle Limited Warranty for Passenger Cars andLight Trucks. For each specific maintenance service task, either the future date (month/year), remainingmiles or both are provided as noted above. Thesystem monitors variable inputs to forecast theintervals and alert the driver when one or morespecific maintenances tasks should beperformed.Maintenance IntervalsMaintenance intervals on motor vehicles wereconventionally based solely on a fixed timeperiod or a specified amount of accumulateddriving mileage.Note: For certain vehicles, the status of the frontand rear brake pads will only be observable in themaintenance system’s display when there areapproximately 2,000 miles or less remainingbefore a brake service will be required to beperformed. However, operational and driving conditions havea major influence on your vehicle’s routinemaintenance requirements; the distance traveledis only one of these significant factors. A vehicleused for short trips in the city with numerous coldstarts, prolonged periods of idling, stop-and-godriving, and high engine speeds duringacceleration may require more frequentmaintenance intervals than a vehicle that isdriven long distances at moderate enginespeeds. For information about the vehicle’s maintenancesystem displays, please refer to the MaintenanceService Display Overview section beginning onpage 3.The following “combine with Engine oil”maintenance service tasks may be identified asneeding to be performed with a specificoccurrence of the “Engine oil” service task(service counter number): Cabin Microfilter(s) Engine air filter(s) Spark plugs Fuel filter (Diesel engines only) Final drive oil (Applicable M vehicles only) Manual transmission fluid (Applicable Mvehicles and transmission only)Your BMW vehicle uses sensors and algorithmstogether with the elapsed time and the drivingdistance/profile to monitor and evaluate yourvehicle’s maintenance service needs. Thisinformation is then used to adapt dynamically theparameters used to forecast the applicablemaintenance service task intervals. The BMW Maintenance SystemAll BMW vehicles are equipped with anintegrated BMW Maintenance System. Vehicle StorageAlthough these items do not appear in the BMWMaintenance System’s display in the vehicle, these services should be performed when yourvehicle’s engine oil is changed in accordancewith the interval identified by your vehicle’s BMWMaintenance System.Disconnecting the battery during periods oflong-term vehicle storage will interrupt thecalculation of time-dependent maintenanceservices. In this situation, BMW recommends that youhave all your time-based maintenance services, such as brake fluid, engine oil and cabinmicrofilter, brought up to the correct date by anauthorized BMW center. For more information on your vehicle’smaintenance services requirements, proceduresand intervals, please refer the MaintenanceService Summary section beginning on page 6.The BMW Maintenance System also includes anoption to set service reminders for the followingstate-specific mandatory vehicle inspections, including: Vehicle safety inspection; and/or Emissions testEngine Oil2018 model year vehicles are factory-filled with: BMW approved fully synthetic oil for gasolineengines; or BMW approved fully synthetic oil for dieselenginesThe corresponding interval data for theseinspections can be inputted into the BMWMaintenance System by a service provider; theyare not determined by the vehicle.Important note: Because diesel engine oilshave a different formulation than gasolineengine oils, always ensure that the correcttype of engine oil is used. For your convenience, you may also wish to haveyour authorized BMW center perform the worknecessary to fulfill these state inspectionrequirements in your area concurrent with themaintenance services specified above whenpossible.Engine oil should be changed when the vehicle’sengine is at operating temperature. If an engine oil service is being performed or youneed to add engine oil between changes, pleaserefer to the Owner’s Manual for therecommended engine oil for your BMW vehicle.Should you request more frequentmaintenance service than is indicated by theBMW Maintenance System during thecoverage period, the cost of these serviceswill not be covered by the BMW MaintenanceProgram.Long-Term Rated Fluids and OilsThe following systems and assemblies arefactory-filled with long-term rated fluid and oil;fluid replacement is only necessary when repairsare being performed (unless otherwise noted): Engine cooling system (antifreeze/coolant) Automatic and manual transmissions(excluding certain M models with manualtransmissions) All-wheel drive transfer cases (except whenindicated by the vehicle)Service Data — Remote Control KeyMaintenance service task status information foryour BMW vehicle is continually updated andstored in your remote control key.Your authorized BMW center can access thisdata and consult with you about applicableservice procedures and tasks for your vehicle. Therefore, always provide your serviceconsultant with the most recent remote controlkey that was used to operate the vehicle whenservicing your vehicle at a BMW center.2
