A variety of health and wellness issues will be addressed. The components offitness will be met through structured individually- paced fitness walking techniques and strength conditioningexercises.Health Information Statement: Physical activities in this class are considered moderate to vigorous and areconsidered limited contact. The NC State Department of Health and Exercise Studies supports the development andimprovement of physical health, while doing so safely. If you have a known medical condition that could beadversely affected by participating in the typical activities of this class, please contact your usual physician forrecommendations about how to participate safely or whether it is more appropriate to choose a different Health andExercise Studies course. If you arenot certain whether you have a medical condition that puts you at risk for participation in this class or have amedical condition and cannot access your usual physician in a timely manner for recommendations for safeparticipation, consider making an appointment at Student Health to discuss your concerns (appointment number is919.515.7107 or book on-line at healthweb.ncsu.edu).GEP Objectives for Courses in the Category of Health and Exercise StudiesEach course in the Health and Exercise Studies category of the General Education Plan will provide instruction andguidance that help students to:1. acquire the fundamentals of health-related fitness, encompassing cardio-respiratory and cardiovascularendurance, muscular strength and endurance, muscular flexibility and body composition; and2. apply knowledge of the fundamentals of health-related fitness toward developing, maintaining, andsustaining an active and healthy lifestyle; and3. acquire or enhance the basic motor skills and skill-related competencies, concepts, and strategies used inphysical activities and sport; and4. gain a thorough working knowledge, appreciation, and understanding of the spirit and rules, history, safety,and etiquette of physical activities and sport.Student Learning OutcomesBy the end of this course, students will be able to:1. explain and perform the fitness requirements associated with physical activity including cardio-respiratoryand cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and endurance, muscular flexibility and bodycomposition;2. perform fitness activities through in-class and out-of-class activities;3. discuss and explain how adopting healthy lifestyle practices leads to lifelong wellness;4. identify and explain how the body responds during physical activity through fitness walking;5. explain how utilizing different types of equipment and fitness principles affect the intensity of an

6.7.individual’s workout;identify the risks associated with fitness walking and other fitness activities; anddemonstrate ability and knowledge to safely perform fitness walking techniques.GradingEach student has the option of taking the course for a letter grade ( /-), credit only, or audit.Requirements for Credit Only: In order to receive a grade of S, students are required to take all exams andquizzes, complete all assignments, and earn a grade of C- or better. Conversion from letter grading to credit only(S/U) grading is subject to university deadlines. Refer to the Registration and Records calendar for deadlines relatedto grading. Student may change grading status through MyPackPortal (until it closes at 11:59 pm on deadline date) or go to Registration & Records at 1000 Harris Hall.Grading Criteria40% - Exams: Cognitive evaluation will consist of a Moodle online Midterm Exam (exam location is anywherestudent wants since the exam is online) and an in-class Final Exam. Exam reviews will provide study materials foreach exam.40% - Timed Walks: Students will test on the 1-Mile Walk midway through the semester and will test on the2-Mile Walk near the end of the semester. Scales are provided in this syllabus. Proper fitness walking technique isrequired for the walks to count as grades. Walks will be videotaped and viewed by the class as a teaching tool. Ifyou do not wish to be videotaped, arrange a separate time with the instructor to test on the walks.10% - Curl-Ups/Push-Ups: For muscular endurance, students will perform the curl-up test (5%) and pushup test (5%) near the end of the semester. The scales and criteria for grading are provided in this syllabus.Although some class time will be used to train for these tests, students will need to train independently throughoutthe semester to perform best on these tests.

10% - Logs: There will be two logs that are 5% each: 1) 10-10-10 Log/Walking Experience Log and 2) 2-of-4Week Activity Log. The logs will challenge students to apply and implement what is being learned in class and toassist in establishing lifetime physical fitness and wellness.Attendance Policy1. Students are expected to attend all classes. This is an “activity” course in which your presence is requiredto participate fully. There may be unforeseen situations in which you may need to miss class. For theseoccasions, five (5) absences are permitted without affecting your grade (save these for when you actuallyneed to use them). On the sixth absence a failing grade will be reported. This adheres to the 80/20 rulestating that students must attend 80 % of the semester’s classes in order to receive credit for the course.Absences Penalty2. Absences one (1) through five (5) results in no penalty.1-5None3. Absence six (6) will result in failure of the course.6No Pass4. 8.Pets and visitors are not allowed during class periods. Firearms, weapons, and/or fireworks are prohibitedfrom class.9. Please turn off cell phones during class time.10. All musical devices must be turned off when you enter class. Whereas studentsare encouraged to use these devices during personal work-out sessions, they are not to be used during classactivity (they tend to isolate the student from social interaction with other students, provide a distraction fromhearing activity or safety instructions, and may interfere with focus on the class lesson).Proper Attire: Health and Exercise Studies Gray T-Shirt, Red/Black/Gray Shorts or Athletic Pants1.2.3.NC State HES-issue clothing and lock may be checked-out (at no charge) for the academic year. Afterevery class or workout, you may obtain clean clothing/towel by handing in your sweaty clothes to thecheckout counter. All checkout clothing needs to be returned by the last day of classes in the Springsemester. You will be charged for items not returned by this date. If you prefer, you may purchase aHealth and Exercise Studies gray t-shirt at the NC State Bookstore (may want to purchase two shirts sinceattending two classes each week).Students who fail to dress properly for class may not be permitted to participate in class activities and willbe counted absent for the class.Personal belongings (backpack/gym bag) should be kept in the locker room versus brought to class onactivity days. The class will be moving from area to area and walking outdoors, being out-of-sight of anypersonal items left on the ground (students are not to wear backpacks while being active).

MUSCULAR ENDURANCE SKILLS TESTS (10%)Curl-Up Test (5% of grade)This test is conducted lying on your back, knees bent 90 degrees, with feet flat on the floor. Arms should beextended down each side with fingertips touching the 3-inch mark from the end of the mat. You must maintainproper form, touch the end of the mat as shoulder blades leave the floor with each repetition and maintain thecadence in order to continue in the test (a partner should be watching these things and counting). If there is amistake in any of these areas, the test is ended. This is not a timed test.Curl-Ups / 5 PointsThings to watch for: Starting point: Both arms must be fully extended (reaching) to 3-inch line with shoulder blades touching mat. There are no breaks allowed – if you stop, you are done. The shoulder blades must leave the mat with each repetition. 33 curls are completed in one minute if the proper cadence is maintained.Test is ended if the student does not touch the end of the mat with both fingers,cannot maintain cadence, shoulder blades are not leaving the mat, or breaksform.Females85 .2543.753.53.2532.752.52.2521.751.51.251.5Males94 59-6055-5853-5451-5248-5045-4740-44Hands-Up Push-Up Test (5% of grade)The student will begin lying prone on the floor with both hands raised. The student will push up off the floor,keeping the back straight so that only their hands and feet make contact with the floor. After the arms are fullyextended the student must lower his/her body back to floor until resting completely in the original prone position.This will complete a single repetition.
