Because Joseph her husband wasfaithful to the Law, and yet didnot want to expose her to publicdisgrace, he had in mind todivorce her quietly.M AT T H E W 1 : 1 9
But after he had considered this, anangel of the Lord appeared to him in adream and said, “Joseph son of David,do not be afraid to take Mary home asyour wife, because what is conceivedin her is from the Holy Spirit.”M AT T H E W 1 : 2 0

All this took place to fulfill what theLord had said through the prophet:M AT T H E W 1 : 2 2
“The virgin will conceive and givebirth to a Son, and they will callhim Immanuel” (which means“God with us”).M AT T H E W 1 : 2 3
When Joseph woke up, he didwhat the angel of the Lord hadcommanded him and took Maryhome as his wife.M AT T H E W 1 : 2 4
But he did not consummate theirmarriage until she gave birth to a Son.And he gave Him the name Jesus.M AT T H E W 1 : 2 5
