They couldunderstand their likes and dislikes are temporary values.They could eliminate these temporary values and filter anddistill and purify and gather the crystal personalities ofthemselves. They could discover what was there in themeternal. They could get the eternal element free from theimpurities through a peculiar process of self-distillationand they have seen the world with the purified eyes. Theinstrument was perfected and through the perfectedinstruments, they have studied what the world was. Thatis the reason why they have no two opinions about anythingand no two Masters disagree about any basic truth.This is the wonderful thing which the ordinary intellectcannot understand, because it is the experience of thecommon intellect that no two intellectuals agree upon asingle point, just as no two watches agree. If two watcheswere to agree and show the same time at exact to the minuteand second, it is not enough if we know how to use thewatch. It is necessary to know how to produce the watchand also to have the capacity to produce watch on thephysical plane. Then only we can make two watches whichagree with each other. Like that, the Masters producedthemselves in such a way that they made instruments thatare never personal. They eliminated the personal elementfrom their instruments, so that the instruments remainidentical in their achievements, though each instrumentkept its own identity according to the field to which it hasbeen applied. This is a rare thing which we cannot easilyunderstand, but it happens to be true because people exist

Overseas Messages - XI7on this earth with a perfect Mastery upon themselves andtheir own nature.Two wonderful Masters began to guide MadamBlavatsky and gave her a plan for the betterment ofhumanity. The two Masters were called Master Morya andMaster Koot Hoomi. They were on the backgrounddirecting Blavatsky and her plans and afterwards theyallowed one of their disciples to direct Blavatsky and herdisciples. They had one wonderful disciple whom they hadbeen perfecting for a long time. The disciple was calledMaster Djwhal Khul and he still calls himself a disciplebecause he calls his Masters also disciples. He says, “Thatup to the level of the Christ, all are disciples”. In the senseeveryone is trying to get himself more perfected. That'swhy he calls himself still a disciple but we should notunderstand that he is in our level by calling himself adisciple.It was he who has dictated many passages in the SecretDoctrine and after Madam Blavatsky passed away fromthe physical body, he took up another lady from theOccident and he has organized a thirty years of work withher and dictated as many as twenty four volumes whichstand in continuation with the books of Madam Blavatsky.The general principles that are given in the books ofBlavatsky have been developed in these books and manyscientific particulars have been worked out. A branch ofthe new science which we can call the Science of Manhas been worked out in all details in a clear and scientificway without allowing the mystical element or without

8The Masters of Wisdomallowing any glorifying element to take place in the books.Purely on the realistic plane and logical and psychologicalplanes, now we have the science of spiritualism and aworking hypothesis of the practical training of the humanconstitution, a working hypothesis of the practicalworkability of the science upon the human constitution ispresented in all detail in the twenty-four volumes dictatedby Djwhal Khul to the new disciple after Madam Blavatsky.That new disciple is called Alice A. Bailey and thework is going on without interruption because they havethe skill of continuing the work through generations andgenerations. They know the way how to establish the streamof work, offer methods of establishing the work. Ourmethods of establishing the work differ from the methodof organizing the work by the Master. We often establishsome institutions on very sound lines, firm lines and wetake every care to see that the institute is made stable, wellorganized and well-functioning. The whole thing rotatesaround the person who has established it and his magneticpersonality radiates the existence of the holy institutionand radiates through the institution.The result is, as soon as the founder personality dies,the institution goes into the hands of others who could notunderstand the objects of the founder and the result isconflicts, disruption and total ruin of the institution. Wehave seen the history of the Theosophical Society. Now,the libraries of the theosophical societies and the greatbooks about the Masters in the societies are being honoured

We see the many political and spiritualmonasteries and organizations based on the greatness ofthe founder. The result is a speedy death within a maximumperiod of three generations. We cannot find an exceptionto this till now.The Masters know this secret and they follow a peculiarway to see that the work continues through centuries andthousands of years. They have studied the layers of theconsciousness of the humanity at large. There is a surfacelayer which we can call the century consciousness layer.It will be as great as the main centres of the big cities inthe Occident. What we find is the great glamour and thebustling traffic of human consciousness. It keeps every oneof us very busy and when we look back what we have donethroughout the day, and when we think of the day's labourat the end of the day, we wonder what we have achievedwhile going around the city in a very busy and restlessmanner. We have gone to our office, have done some workthere, came home and the sum total of the work of theday is, that we could organize everything to eat, to drink,to live in (that is house) and to clothe ourselves, to purchaseour shoes, to purchase our fancy goods and to purchasemedicines. So, the busiest activity of the day only keepsup our existence and if we question ourselves why weshould do all this, the answer is to live.Automatically there is the second question, why shouldwe live? The answer is, because we are helpless, we shouldlive; because we cannot kill ourselves, we should live;

10The Masters of Wisdombecause we are born without our own knowledge, it isimperative that we should live. We can't help living. Exceptthis answer, we have no answer to satisfy ourselves. But,this is what we call the century mind. Every century hasits own busy mind as the first layer of human consciousness.Under that layer, there is the second layer which can becalled the layer of the thinkers of the century. There youfind the scientists, the philosophers and the variousindustrialists and professors of economics, architecture,medicine etc. The professors and the students are very busyin teaching and learning things and what is the result? Itis only to keep up the balance of the living. Once again,the same reply, to make a livelihood and to live until wedie.There is the third layer where there are roomsunderground where people sit down calmly and thinksomething about the activity of the life. They know thestatistics of the centuries. They have micro photos of theintrinsic value of the centuries which are obtained afterfiltering away all the detail of the busy life we have. Withthose micro photos of human values through centuries, theysit down there; begin to play chess, not for fun, but forthe rearrangement of human values and reorganization ofhuman cultures. To see if a change can be exercised sothat the human being can have a recollection of the truththat he is more valuable than his creation or the bustle ofthe street. It is really very difficult to make us recollectthis truth. But, still they make psychological and suprapsychological experiments on the constitution of man and

Overseas Messages - XI11the psychology of groups, psychology of religions, partiesand the various methods of combinations of individuals.They succeed in bringing out a new pattern and presentit to the awareness of the century, so that at least twentyfive percent of the thinkers of the century begin to respond.To add to the new group of world servers, everyonewho experiments a new pattern upon himself will presenthimself as one more individual, a contribution to the alreadyexisting number of thinkers and workers. Like this, thenumbers increase gradually, so that the new pattern of workcomes into existence. This is the work of the Masters. Theylive away from the world, not physically and not mentally,but in a strange dimension of consciousness, they live awayfrom us. Physically they live amidst us, they will be mixingwith us, sharing everything good and bad with us, but theonly peculiarity is, they are so close with us, that they knowus, we do not know them. That is one strange thing withthe Masters.He can be a passenger in the train by your side, butto you he means nothing. To him, you mean everything.All the passengers in the train mean everything to him.To anyone of the other passengers, he is nothing. Becauseall the other passengers are also nothing unless they belongto the group of their relatives, or wife or husband or childrenor father or mother or brother or a friend or a member ofhis own political party or belonging to his own religionor sect. Unless there is such a relationship, others arenothing in our view. But to the Masters, all of us areeverything to them. This is a second thing which we can

That is, the value theyattribute to our existence is something which we can neverunderstand simply because we attribute no value to ourfellow beings at all.Unless we have the temperament to attribute somevalue to the people around us, we cannot have the lookof a Master. For this reason, they know us always.Sometimes we may deceive ourselves that we know them.In many of the cities of the Occident, there are people whoclaim that they are receiving communications from MasterMorya or Koot Hoomi late in the nights, they take a penand paper, they close their eyes and invoke the Master fromabove and they begin to write some nonsense on the paperand the Morya or Koot Hoomi they know, is nothing buttheir own mind along with the wishful thinking of manythings. We have many messages from the Masters throughthe common people of the Occident.You need not be surprised if Krishnamacharyapublishes volumes and claims that they are the dictationsof Morya, Koot Hoomi or Djwhal Khul. I know such peoplein the Occident and early in the morning, they get up andtelephone to their friends and say, you are expected to eatten tomatoes a day because Master Morya has dictated tome last night that I should prescribe this medicine for you.I personally know such wonderful people.One nice lady has telephoned late in the midnight toone of her friends and the friend woke up from deep sleepand received the telephone. Then, the good lady says, ‘hellogood news, in your previous birth, you were Isaac Newton.’

Overseas Messages - XI13The fellow was stunned and he received a shock, fromwhich he could not recover until a month, because he wasreally afraid if he were Isaac Newton. If it were to be true,it would be very inconvenient to the poor fellow. But luckilyenough, once again he could discover that he was not IsaacNewton, but he was himself, the husband of his wife.So, real Masters are different. They have no such nastythings to do. They have their work to do. They are workingto change the temporary values of man to bring thehumanity into the recollection of the real permanent values.Now, we will go into a network of Masters and howit is going on. When we understand that the Masters areliving in secrecy, sometimes we can imagine that they arein forests or caves. It is never the case, they live in a placelike Geneva or Lugano or New York or London. They havetheir own network for the benefit of Mankind just as thepoliticians have their network for the selfish things ofMankind, just as the politician has the negative networkto conduct the black magic of self-aggrandization and toprotect his own position in the political party. That is thenegative way of network worked out by the politician. But,for the humanity, the Masters frame the same type ofnetwork and since they have no interest in anything forthemselves, they don't mind living incognito.If they suggest good thoughts to anyone of theirdisciples, they want that the disciple exercises thesethoughts upon the society in the name of the disciple orsome other friend, because they never bother about theownership or authorship of these ideas. Fundamentally,

14The Masters of Wisdomthese Masters work on two or three items of science. Theone is, 'The Law of Evolution'. They know how mankindcame into existence after the many changes of the animalkingdom and the plant kingdom. They know all the stagesof the human intellectual evolution and they know the futureof the maturity of humanity that the intellectual humanbeing evolves into a spiritual human being, so that he mayunderstand that he need not own or possess anything.He lives only without owning anything. But, we havemany fears about our personal living. We have oursignatures in the bank and the assurance of our salariesand the arrangement of the government for the income ofindividuals. We have the providence of the insurance andpension, and we make life complicated because we haveour own foolish fears about our present and future. TheMasters know that these fears are baseless and alsounderstand that fear is an animal instinct that is preservedby the human animal and that man has magnified theinstinct of fear into so many complexes which we callmoney, savings and interest on money, all such things. Theylive free from all things. They eat food after they have donesomething to the society and the expenditure for themselvesis far much less than what they pay to the world beforehand.So, they are never indebted to anyone and all thehumanity is indebted to them. This confidence is due totheir understanding of human evolution and a perfectknowledge of how the human being behaves and into whatstages he walks or evolves. They know the relationshipbetween the individual and the society, they know the

Overseas Messages - XI15knowledge of how the races are working on this earth, howthe group consciousness of each race and nation is evolvingin total, so that it may contribute through centuries to workas a supplementation for perfection.For example, if the white races have some strong pointsand some weak points and if the black races have differentstrong points and different weak points, the group evolutionof the two different races tries to make blends of the twodifferent races so that a third and a new race evolves. Thestrong points of the two races are blended in the new thirdrace and the Masters know how these things take placein Nature. Then they are able to know their own work inthe matter. They understand the whole plan of the planetaryactivity of this earth and the planetary consciousness ofthis earth and how it is distributed among the many racesand how each race is trying to contribute to fill up thedefects of the other race. Every action of the Masters isaimed at this concept of perfection and the existence ofevery Master is supplementary to the work of the otherMasters. The daily routine and activity is also fabricatedin such a way that it is always supplementary to the goodwork others do. That is the reason why we do not findany discussions among the Masters because discussionslead into burning away of time and life span and someheadache due to hypertension and sometimes there willbe the retracing of the consciousness into the animal levelswhenever we grow emotional about our discussion.When we grow emotional, there is no wonder if webehave like buffaloes, monkeys or donkeys, simply because

16The Masters of Wisdomwe are evolved from all those animal forms and thetendencies of those animals still exist in our blood andsimply because we do not know the art of distillingourselves from those tendencies. You do not find anydiscussions among Masters. If at all, there are books givenby the Masters, they are in the form of suggestions,injunctions and instructions that are positive and practicaland verified whenever practised. So, they are not scholarlydiscourses, but they are the same truths presented to suitour taste because they are not at all enamoured ofdiscovering something new.In the activity of the universe, there is nothing newexcept the cyclic activity of the evolution. If we try toimagine something new, it becomes our own creation andnot creation of Nature. For example, I discover a new typeof multiplication table and for the first time I publish it quitedifferent from the existing multiplication table. You can findin it that 5x6 49 because everything is new. The result is,you will throw it in fire because it is in no way useful.The Masters know these facts. They take us as discipleswhen the time comes. If we look to them it is a waste ofenergy and time. Often people meditate upon Masters, closetheir doors, so that other people may not enter in; and thosewho have membership only should enter inside and thenbegin to meditate upon the Masters. They begin to speakwith the Masters that is themselves. Then they begin toreceive impressions and messages and they wait and waitif the Masters can be seen, just as they are seen by MadamBlavatsky or Alice A. Bailey, but the truth is different.

They expect us todo something, something which is really useful to ourneighbours. If we begin to study books to know how thelife after death will be, the Masters will be laughingwhenever they think of us because they are concerned withlife before death, not life after death. It is only the dreamersand the lazy fellows that are concerned about life after deathfor the simple reason, they want to escape themselves awayfrom their duties towards the fellowmen. They considerall these things as the hysteria of the weak human beings.They begin to look at us when we begin to look atpeople around us and as long as we look to them, theynever look to us.
