Thank you very much for buying a BROTHER sewing machine. Before using your new machine,please read the safety instructions below and the explanations given in the instruction manual.With industrial sewing machines, it is normal to carry out work while positioned directly in frontof moving parts such as the needle and thread take-up lever, and consequently there is always adanger of injury that can be caused by these parts. Follow the instructions from training personneland instructors regarding safe and correct operation before operating the machine so that youwill know how to use it correctly.SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS1 Safety indications and their meaningsThis instruction manual and the indications and symbols that are used on the machine itself areprovided in order to ensure safe operation of this machine and to prevent accidents and injury toyourself or other people. 2 Notes on safetyDANGERWait at least 5 minutes after turning off the power switch and disconnecting the power cord from the walloutlet before opening the face plate of the control box. Touching areas where high voltages are present canresult in severe injury.CAUTIONEnvironmental requirementsUse the sewing machine in an area which is freefrom sources of strong electrical noise such ashigh-frequency welders.Sources of strong electrical noise may causeproblems with correct operation.Any fluctuations in the power supply voltageshould be within 10% of the rated voltage forthe machine.Voltage fluctuations which are greater than thismay cause problems with correct operation.The power supply capacity should be greaterthan the requirements for the sewing machine'selectrical consumption.Insufficient power supply capacity may causeproblems with correct operation.The ambient temperature should be within therange of 5 C to 35 C during use.Temperatures which are lower or higher than thismay cause problems with correct operation.The relative humidity should be within the rangeof 45% to 85% during use, and no dew formation should occur in any devices.Excessively dry or humid environments anddew formation may cause problems with correct operation.Avoid exposure to direct sunlight during use.Exposure to direct sunlight may cause problems with correct operation.In the event of an electrical storm, turn off thepower and disconnect the power cord from thewall outlet.Lightning may cause problems with correctoperation.InstallationMachine installation should only be carried outby a qualified technician.Contact your Brother dealer or a qualified electrician for any electrical work that may need tobe done.The sewing machine weighs more than 600 kg.The installation should be carried out by fouror more people.Do not connect the power cord until installation is complete, otherwise the machine mayoperate if the start switch is pressed by mistake, which could result in injury.Be sure to connect the ground. If the groundconnection is not secure, you run a high risk ofreceiving a serious electric shock, and problemswith correct operation may also occur.Be sure to wear protective goggles and gloveswhen handling the lubricating oil or grease, sothat no oil or grease gets into your eyes or ontoyour skin, otherwise inflammation can result.Furthermore, do not drink the oil or grease under any circumstances, as they can cause vomiting and diarrhoea.Keep the oil out of the reach of children.Avoid setting up the sewing machine nearsources of strong electrical noise such as highfrequency welding equipment.If this precaution is not taken, incorrect machineoperation may result.Secure the machine with the casters when installing it so that it will not move by placing theleveling seat on the sound floor.When securing the cords, do not bend the cordsexcessively or fasten them too hard withstaples, otherwise there is the danger that fireor electric shocks could occur.2BES-940BC BES-1240BC

CAUTIONSewingThis sewing machine should only be used byoperators who have received the necessarytraining in safe use beforehand.Attach all safety devices before using the sewing machine. If the machine is used withoutthese devices attached, injury may result.The sewing machine should not be used for anyapplications other than sewing.Do not touch any of the moving parts or pressany objects against the machine while sewing,as this may result in personal injury or damageto the machine.Turn off the power switch at the following times,otherwise the machine may operate if the startswitch is pressed by mistake, which could result in injury. Otherwise burns may result.If an error occurs in machine operation, or if abnormal noises or smells are noticed, immediatelyturn off the power switch.
