Birka B22: threaded in variationA Standard turning sequence - thread positionsBLook closely at each picture, at the point where the unwoven warp meets the woven band. Look at the colorsof the visible threads. Compare the arrangement you see to the chart on page 1.If you lose track of which row you should be doing next, with any luck these pictures and the multi-rowthreading diagram on page 3 may help you find your place again, or correct any mistakes.Start position2After row 1After row 2After row 3After row 4After row 5After row 6After row 7After row 8stringcrafter.com

RowThis diagram may help with visualising what’s happening at any point in a pattern and tounderstand why some ‘reversals’ can look better than others. The ‘start position’ is equivalent to the threading diagram in the chart on page 1. ‘After row 4’ and ‘After row 8’ haveidentical threadings to the start position.A Standard turning sequence:threading diagrams for every rowdcab Read each card in the diagram anticlockwise starting at top left. The colors of each holecorrespond to the position and color of each thread that you should see in your actualcard. (Individual cards in your deck are always viewed from the right. If you’re usingmarked cards, the AB edge is closest to the weaver and woven band. ) Read each line from left to right. The first card in a line is the first card on the left of yourdeck when viewing your deck from above. When comparing the diagram to your cards:Birka B22: threaded in variation3

Birka B22: threaded in variationDrachenwald Academy of DefencePossibilities for ‘viking-style’ representations of the braids for the four ranks within the Academy. From the Academy Charter (file dated 2017-05-20), the braid colors are described as: Free Scholar: black Provost: black and red - more black than red Prefect: gold and black - more gold than black Companion: red and gold - more red than gold. The charts are all based on a variation of part of the Birka B22 band, in a threaded-in pattern. (The originalband was brocaded.) I created these alternate threading charts in GTT, a piece of software written by MasterGuntram - a reknowned tablet weaver. I annotated the threading of each chart in red letters/symbols, so thatthey are more directly comparable with the chart on page 1.The background color (represented as grey) is assumed to be choseneither based on the clients preference or to blend in with the colors oftheir fighting garb. The foreground color changes to represent the rank. Apart from thefree scholar braid, either two or four colors are used for the foregroundin each example. Take a look at those charts from about 5 to 10 feetaway. That should give an idea of the balance between colors. (In thefour color variants, the shading is biased towards the dominant color.)The number of threads in foreground and background does vary. Please count the squares in each chart’s threading diagram carefully. The turning sequence is identical in all cases.adbcFree ScholarProvost 1stringcrafter.comProvost 2Provost 35
