The Last Week of Jesus LifeTo fully understand the events of the last days of Jesus and their timing, we must fullyunderstand the reckoning of the Hebrew day. Unlike our present days, the Hebrew day began justafter sunset around 6 PM in the evening. Their day ran from 6PM for 24 hours until 6PM thenext day. Please reference and review Figure 2, Illustration of the structure of the Hebrew Day.The Passover occurred on 15 Nisan (Exodus 12:6-8), that event would become a holyconvocation to God in the Law Covenant– the Feast of Unleavened Bread. God had instructedthe Israelites to prepare the Passover meal in haste by the evening before and to eat it “thatnight”, which would have been just after the evening of 14 Nisan. This Passover meal actuallyoccurs in the early hours of the Hebrew day of 15 Nisan during about the time of the first watch. With this in mind, it can often become confusing when the Lords Supper actually tookplace and provide a factual basis for the placement of the actual events in scripture. Although theGospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke were the earliest, we will be using the Gospel of John as theframe of our study and build the other Gospel accounts around and upon it. John was the lastGospel expositor; he appears to have made a point to use specific language, as if to clarify aspecific timeline which he may have felt needed to be clarified from the other writings. In theattachments at the end of the study, we have placed renderings of the calendar days of the lastweek time frame showing the merging of Hebrew and Gregorian calendars. You will also find adiagram of the events of the last day of Jesus in which it appears the events unfolded. The high priest had prophesied (and put out edict/instructions) that Jesus should die forthe nation and the Jewish religious leadership had laid plans to kill Jesus. (Jn 11:45-54) Jesushad gone to a place called Ephraim. In Ephraim the Lord abides with the disciples till at theapproach of the Passover. (Jn 11:54-57) Alittle before the feast, many went up out ofthe country to Jerusalem, to perform thenecessary purifications, and there wasmuch discussion as to the probability ofHis presence. (Bible Study Tools, 2019)He leaves Ephraim on his way towardJerusalem, which was about 13 milesaway and goes to Bethany which is about1.5 miles from Jerusalem. There isindication in scripture that Jesus may havespent the night-time hours of 9 Nisan atthe home of Zacchaeus near Jericho on theway to Bethany. (Lk 19:1-9) Jesus wouldFigure 1 Map of Jesus’ last week Travelshave traveled along the border line of(Chris & Jenifer Taylor, 2019)Samaria and Galilee by way of Jericho andthe along the Jordon. If He left early in the morning he may have reached Bethany in theafternoon. The trip from the Jordan valley up to Jerusalem was a 2400 ft elevation change. It appears from (Mt. 20:17) and from the mention of Salome (v. 20.) that he wasaccompanied by others than the Twelve. As the time for concealment was now past, and it washis purpose to enter Jerusalem so all could be aware. It is probable that he came into the Jordanvalley and met the larger processions of pilgrims that came from the neighborhood of the Sea of

Lk 19:11-19Below is a graphical breakdown of the Hebrew/Gregorian calendar days and hours of thelast week of Jesus. The columns help identify the exact Hebrew days and times (as much aspossible) and put them in context with the calendar days and times used today.6 PM-12 AM9 NisanSaturday28 MarchTimeHebrewWeekdayGregorianEvents and CommentsJesus has been spending his ministry time low key in Ephraim. Jn 11 TheSabbath has just ended and Jesus is free to travel. We assume he wouldhave waited until day-break to start any such travel. It appears that he mayhave spent the Sabbath or stopped at the home of Zacchaeus near Jerichoon the way to Bethany. Lk 19:1-91What multitudes attended the feasts, especially this feast, appears from Josephus. From actual count, itappears that at a given Passover 256,500 paschal lambs were slain; and, allowing ten persons to each lamb, whichwas the smallest allowable number, the participants amounted to 2,565,000 persons.2Quote from Brother Frank Shallieu, The Last Week of Jesus Life, 1991 Future Events Conference,Birmingham AL.2

The Last Week of Jesus LifeJesus enters the city amid much fanfare riding a donkey colt in fulfillmentof Zech 9:9. and a very great multitude spread their garments in the way;others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in theway. And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in thename of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest. Mt 21:9, Jn 12:12-15, Mk11:1-9, Lk 19:28-40Here Jesus shows his kingship, yet humbleness. And the multitude said, This is Jesus the prophet of Nazarethof Galilee. Verily, verily, I say untoyou, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone:but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.” Jn 12:23-24Jesus says. “If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am,there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Fatherhonour. Jn 12:26Q: What is revealed in Jesus’ comment “if any man serve him, he will bewith him and his Father will honor him?Jesus prays that the Father glorify Himself and commits to himself to thepurpose of his Advent. God speaks from heaven like thunder! Jn 12:2732 Jesus blames the Pharisees for the people being blind and hardened. He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me. Iam come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me shouldnot abide in darkness. Jn 12:36 Notime marker given. And seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves, he came, if haplyhe might find anything thereon: and when he came to it, he found nothingbut leaves; for it was not the season of figs. And he answered and saidunto it, No man eat fruit from thee henceforward forever. And hisdisciples heard it. Mar 11:19 And he leftthem, and went out of the city into Bethany; and he lodged there Mt21:17 Here Matthew is arranged topical rather than chronological for thecursing of the fig tree occurred on 11 Nisan, the lesson of the event isexplained on 12 Nisan the next morning. No time marker indications of activityNo time marker indications of activityAnd as they passed by in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered awayfrom the roots. Mar 11:20, Mt 21:206 AM-12 PM12 NisanWednesday1 AprilAnd Jesus teaches the apostles, Have faith in God. Mar 11:21 Mt 21:2122 Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not onlydo this which is done to the fig tree, Mt 21:21 Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Bethou taken up and cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that what he saith cometh to pass; he shall have it.Mar 11:23, Mt 21:21 Therefore I say unto you, All things whatsoever ye pray and ask for, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them. Mar 11:24, Mt21:22 And whensoever ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have aught againstany one; that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you yourtrespasses. Mar 11:256

The Last Week of Jesus LifeNo time marker given, part of day assumed.12 PM-6 PM12 NisanWednesday1 AprilAnd they come again to Jerusalem: and as he was walking in the temple, there come to him the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders, challenging his authority. He asks them to answer, The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men? They feared to answer, so Jesus does notanswer them. Mar 11:27-33, Mt 21:23-27, Lk 20:1-8Parable of the two Sons. Whether of them twain did the will of hisfather? They say unto him, The first. Verily I say unto you, That thepublicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you (Scribesand Pharisees). For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, andye believed him not: but the publicans and the harlots believed him: andye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward, that ye might believehim. Mt 21:28-3212 PM-6 PM12 NisanWednesday1 AprilParable of the evil tenants, When the lord therefore of the vineyardcometh, what will he do unto those husbandmen? They say unto him, Hewill miserably destroy those wicked men, and will let out his vineyardunto other husbandmen, which shall render him the fruits in theirseasons. Jesus states, And have ye not read this scripture; The stone whichthe builders rejected is become the head of the corner. “Therefore say Iunto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to anation bringing forth the fruits thereof. And whosoever shall fall on thisstone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him topowder.” This reminds us of the language used by Daniel in reference tothe Image and stone cut without hands which strikes it. The authoritiesrealize he is talking about them but cannot take him for fear of the people.Mar 12:1-12, Mt 21:33-46, Lk 20:9-18Parable of the Wedding Feast. Mt 22: 1-14 “For many are called, butfew are chosen. And he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hithernot having a wedding garment? And he was speechless. Then said theking to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and casthim into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”Q: What is the significance of the wedding garment? What is theimplication of what happened to the one who had taken it off?7

The Last Week of Jesus LifeThe Pharisees and Herodians challenge Jesus about taxation hoping to triphim up, And Jesus answering said unto them, Render to Caesar the thingsthat are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's. And they marvelledat him. Mt 22:15-22, Mar 12:17, Lk 20:19-26Jesus is asked about the resurrection in an attempt to trap him, Mar12:18-23 Mt 22:23-33, Lk 20:27-40 And Jesus answering said unto them,Do ye not therefore err, because ye know not the scriptures, neither thepower of God? For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels which are in heaven. Andas touching the resurrection of the dead, that they rise: have ye not read inthe book of Moses, how in the bush God spake unto him, saying, I am theGod of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? He is notthe God of the dead, but the God of the living: ye therefore do greatly err.12 PM-6 PM12 NisanWednesday1 AprilJesus is asked which is the greatest commandment? Mt 22:34-40, Mar12:26-31 - Jesus answered,The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God isone Lord: (Deu 6:4) And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thyheart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thystrength: this is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour asthyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.Jesus asks a fundamental question of the Pharisees. Whose son is Christ?Mt 22:41-46, Lk 20:41-44 They say unto him, The Son of David. Hesaith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying, TheLORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thineenemies thy footstool? If David then call him Lord, how is he his son?And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man fromthat day forth ask him any more.Jesus then address the multitude, and to his disciples Mt 23:1-36, Lk20:45-47 He address reasons why the Pharisees and Scribes do notrepresent God’s earthly spiritual leadershipThe scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat: All therefore whatsoeverthey bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works:for they say, and do not.8

The Last Week of Jesus Life For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay themon men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with oneof their fingers. But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broadtheir phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments, And lovethe uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi. But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and allye are brethren. And call no man your father upon the earth: for one isyour Father, which is in heaven. Neither be ye called masters: for oneis your Master, even Christ. But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant. Andwhosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shallhumble himself shall be exalted.12 PM-6 PM12 NisanWednesday1 AprilWoes to Scribes and Pharisees1. But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut upthe kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.2. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devourwidows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore yeshall receive the greater damnation.3. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass seaand land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make himtwofold more the child of hell than yourselves.4. Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear bythe temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of thetemple, he is a debtor! Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, thegold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold? And, Whosoever shallswear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the giftthat is upon it, he is guilty. Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift? Whoso therefore shallswear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon. Andwhoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him thatdwelleth therein. And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by thethrone of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.5. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe ofmint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier Mtters ofthe law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, andnot to leave the other undone. Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.9

The Last Week of Jesus Life6. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make cleanthe outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full ofextortion and excess. Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which iswithin the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.7. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like untowhited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but arewithin full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness. Even so yealso outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full ofhypocrisy and iniquity.8. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build thetombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not havebeen partakers with them in the blood of the prophets. Wherefore yebe witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them whichkilled the prophets. Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers. Yeserpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation ofhell?12 PM-6 PM12 NisanWednesday1 AprilWherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes:and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall yescourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city: Thatupon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from theblood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.Q: What does Jesus mean,”I send unto you”?Jesus culminates his judgment against the Jewish Nation and rejects themas a group because they have rejected him. Mt 23:37-39, Lk 19:41-44O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest themwhich are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy childrentogether, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and yewould not! Behold, your house is left unto you desolate. For I say untoyou, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he thatcometh in the name of the Lord.Jesus then departs from the temple and they go to the mount of OlivesThe Widow’s offering greater. Lk 21:1-410

The Last Week of Jesus LifeJesus foretells of the destruction of the temple and discusses the signs ofthe end of the age. Mt 24:1-28, Lk 21:5-28Destruction of the Temple - See ye not all these things? verily I say untoyou, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not bethrown down.Destruction of Jerusalem - And when ye shall see Jerusalem compassedwith armies, then know that the desolation thereof is nigh. Then let themwhich are in Judaea flee to the mountains; and let them which are in themidst of it depart out; and let not them that are in the countries enterthereinto. For these be the days of vengeance, that all things which arewritten may be fulfilled. But woe unto them that are with child, and tothem that give suck, in those days! for there shall be great distress in theland, and wrath upon this people. And they shall fall by the edge of thesword, and shall be led away captive into all nations: and Jerusalem shallbe trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles befulfilled. Lk 21:20-2412 PM-6 PM12 NisanWednesday1 AprilSigns of thy coming, and of the end of the age – Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be nottroubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom:and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in diversplaces. All these are the beginning of sorrows. Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: andye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake. And then shallmany be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate oneanother. And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall waxcold. But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for awitness unto all nations; and then shall the end come. When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken ofby Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let himunderstand:) Then let them which be in Judaea flee into themountains:11

The Last Week of Jesus Life Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing outof his house: Neither let him which is in the field return back to takehis clothes. And woe unto them that are with child, and to them thatgive suck in those days! But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbathday: For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since thebeginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. And exceptthose days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but forthe elect's sake those days shall be shortened. Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there;believe it not. For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it werepossible, they shall deceive the very elect. Wherefore if they shall sayunto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in thesecret chambers; believe it not.For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto thewest; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For wheresoeverthe carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together.12 PM-6 PM12 NisanWednesday1 AprilThe second advent of Jesus foretold Mt 24:29-31 & 36-43 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun bedarkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fallfrom heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and thenshall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son ofman coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and theyshall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end ofheaven to the other. But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels ofheaven, but my Father only. But as the days of Noe (Noah) were, soshall also the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days thatwere before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying andgiving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, Andknew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall alsothe coming of the Son of man be Then shall two be in the field; theone shall be taken, and the other left. Two women shall be grinding atthe mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left. Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come. Butknow this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watchthe thief would come, he would have watched, and would not havesuffered his house to be broken12

Heaven andearth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.12 PM-6 PM12 NisanWednesday1 AprilJesus offers admonition to be wise and watching Mt 24:44-51, Lk 21:3438 Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not theSon of man cometh. Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his lord hath maderuler over his household, to give them meat in due season? Blessed isthat servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. Verily I say unto you, That he shall make him ruler over all hisgoods. But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lorddelayeth his coming; And shall begin to smite his fellow servants, andto eat and drink with the drunken; The lord of that servant shall comein a day when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that he is notaware of, And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion withthe hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.Parable of the Ten Virgins. Mt 25:14-30 For unto every one that hath shall begiven, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall betaken away even that which he hath. And cast ye the unprofitable servantinto outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Thisparable shows us to be doing what you can with what you are given in theservice of your Lord.Jesus speaks of the Kingdom (Mediatorial Reign?)
