From the earlydays of anesthesia practice to the modern technology ofthe present, millions of anesthetic procedures have beenrendered safely by dentists trained in the administrationof general anesthesia, deep sedation, conscious sedation, nitrous oxide analgesia and local anesthesia. At the core of this experience are the dentist and his/her office anesthesia team. In the course of prescribedtraining, the contemporary oral and maxillofacial surgeonspends major periods of time delivering the various formsof anesthesia in the operating room as well as in a speciallyequipped operatory. In addition to this clinical experience, the training program includes formal didactic material. Aftercompleting this intense educational experience, today’sgraduate of an approved oral and maxillofacial surgeryresidency has the skills to provide safe and effective painand anxiety control in both the hospital and office setting. Moreover, a growing number of other dental specialistsand general dentists are obtaining training in anesthesiaand sedation and using these treatment modalities in theirclinical practices. To put these skills into practice, however, the correct settingmust be created. Organized oral and maxillofacial surgery, through its office anesthesia evaluation program and itsoffice emergency manual, has developed a system throughwhich anesthetic services are provided in a well-equippedoffice by a practitioner knowledgeable in anesthetic practiceand emergency management. In the process of evaluatingthe overall office environment, AAOMS recognized thata core educational experience could be tailored to theanesthesia assistant. DAANCE was developed to providea continuing education curriculum for professional allied

staff. Although this program was initially developed byAAOMS, there is clearly a need for the training of anesthesiaassistants in all dental practices where anesthesia andsedation are administered. The goals of this program are meant to provide a means forthe dentist providing anesthesia and/or sedation to helpeducate staff in the essentials of office-based ambulatoryanesthesia. With a better understanding of these principles,it is anticipated that the office anesthesia assistant willmake a significant contribution to the patient care team. This program is designed to assist not only the OMS office, but any dental office delivering outpatient anesthesia forother dental procedures. Doctors are encouraged to followup with their state dental board for an assistant’s full scopeof practice.exam. The course is designed for oral and maxillofacialsurgery assistants or assistants employed by other dentalprofessionals with valid anesthesia permits. The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeonsis an ADA CERP Recognized Provider.ADA CERP is a service of the American Dental Association toassist dental professionals in identifying quality providers ofcontinuing dental education. ADA CERP does not approve orendorse individual courses or instructors, nor does it implyacceptance of credit hours by boards of dentistry. The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeonsdesignates this activity for 36 continuing education credits.Upon successful completion of the final examination, theassistant will receive proof of certification and a programcompletion lapel pin.Definition of the Anesthesia AssistantA Dental Anesthesia Assistant (DAA) possesses the expertiseto provide supportive anesthesia care in a safe and effectivemanner.
