Known for his kindness andgenerosity to the poor, the story has itthat St. Nicholas once tossed bags ofgold through the open window of apoor man’s house to help hisdaughters avoid a life of prostitution.According to legend, the gold landedin stockings dangling on the corners of the beds, whichis why many of us celebrate St. Nicholas Day byhanging stockings and filling them with candy, fruit, andsmall toys. Not much else is known about this beloved saint, butregardless, his reputation as a generous man continuestoday.Joy Cards Service ProjectAs we approach the holidays, joinFused High School Youth Ministry inour service project of creating JoyCards. Both realities, noticing andparticipating, were a part of the lives of two friends of God whosedeath anniversaries take place during this Advent: Servant of God,Dorothy Day (Nov. 29) and Thomas Merton (Dec. 10). WhileDorothy took the path of activism, she was dedicated to her dailyprayer and contemplation practices. Thomas Merton was acontemplative Trappist monk and author of numerous books andarticles that called his readers to deep contemplation of God’spresence in the realities of our world that would lead them to action.Noticing and participating, contemplation and action are the livingbreath of a disciple. Breathing is comprised of inhaling and exhaling –you can’t have one without the other. So with a Disciple of Christ:contemplation and action are our living breath.May the words of Day and Merton bless us with wisdom this Advent.Dorothy Day· Don't worry about being effective. Just concentrate on beingfaithful to the truth.· No one has a right to sit down and feel hopeless. There is toomuch work to do.· Our rule is the works of mercy. It is the way of sacrifice, worship, a sense of reverence.Thomas Merton· Life is this simple: we are living in a world that is absolutelytransparent and the divine is shining through it all the time. This is not just a nice story or a fable, it is true.· To say that I am made in the image of God is to say that loveis the reason for my existence, for God is love. Love is mytrue identity. Selflessness is my true self. Love is my truecharacter. Love is my name.· The spiritual life is first of all a life. It is not merely somethingto be known and studied, it is to be lived. by Sr. Mary Kerber, SSNDLending LibraryThe Lending Library has a new location! It is nowin the Bride’s Room and ready for use.
