Chronology of the Four GospelsEspañol(Harmony of the Gospels)Much of this chronology follows that in The Narrated Bible by F. LaGard Smith, though I have made someadjustments of my own. (See Aschmann.net/BibleChronology/#Sources for more information.) The page numbersin the last column are from that book. (When I have significantly changed the order these are marked in green.)Red: date or timespan provided in the text, or that can be calculated from it. The text that provides it is also in red.1Bold and outlined : the most complete or key passage, or a passage with important additional information.Blue outline : passages outside the four gospels.Yellow background: passages that are not in chronological order in one of the gospels (or at least that The Narrated Bible organized in a different order).2Sky-blue background: passages that are arranged in a different order merely for organizational reasons, not because of a real chronological problem. From before the birth of Jesus to the beginning of his ministryMatthewWhen and WhereIntroductionThebirthsof John theBaptistand ofJesus ChristJesus’childhoodIntroductory MaterialThe Prelude to JohnThe genealogies of JesusAn angel appears to ZechariahAn angel appears to MaryMary visits ElizabethBirth of John the BaptistJoseph finds out Mary is pregnantBirth of JesusCircumcision of JesusPresented in the templeVisit of the wise menReturn to NazarethHis childhoodVisit to JerusalemMarkLuke1:11:1-4John1351-521:1-18 Luke 1:24,261:1-17Nazareth, 9 months before the birth of JesusJudea (Luke 1:39) Luke 1:31,36Judea, 6 months before the birth of JesusNazareth, after the return of Mary1357135813592:1-202:212:22-39a1:25bJerusalem, 40 days old (Lev. 12:4)Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Egypt13561:18-25aBethlehem, between 6 and 4 B.C.?8 days alem, 15 months before the birth of Jesus135213601361-622:1-222:2312 years old (Luke he First Year and a Half of the Ministry of Jesus(the “Year of Preparation”)The start oftheministriesof John theBaptistand JesusFirstPassoverof Jesus’ministryEnd of theyearBeginning ofthe GreatGalileanMinistryJohn begins his ministryBaptism of JesusTemptation of JesusJohn explains his ministryJohn proclaims JesusInitial call of Peter and Andrew3Call of Philip and NathanaelJesus changes water into wineJesus clears the templeJesus teaches NicodemusJesus and John the Baptist baptizeJohn the Baptist tells about JesusHerod puts John in prisonJesus leaves for GalileeThe Samaritan womanHe arrives in GalileeJesus heals an official’s sonJesus settles in CapernaumHe begins preaching the kingdomRejection in Nazareth“Official” call of the 4 fishermenHe heals man with unclean spiritHeals Peter’s mother-in-law, othersJesus prays in a solitary placeJesus travels throughout GalileeHe heals a leperHe heals a paralyticJesus calls Matthew (Levi)By the river Jordan, perhaps in the last part of year 26(Luke 3:23: “Jesus was about thirty years of age”)In the desert for 40 days3:1-123:13-174:1-111:2-81:9-111:12-13Bethany on the other side of the Jordan (early 27?)the next daythe next daythe next dayCana in Galilee, 3 days later, after a 3-day walkJerusalem, April (year 27?)4:12a1:14a3:19-20December? Before that my analysis hadbeen highly inconsistent, with several redundancies and not really following The Narrated Bible or any other authority.5John the apostle, author of the fourth gospel, never mentions himself by name in his gospel, except indirectly as one of the two “sons of Zebedee” in John 21:2, apparently toshow humility. Instead, he apparently refers to himself in other ways, as tradition confirms. He is almost certainly the “disciple whom Jesus loved” in John 13:23-25, 19:2627, 20:2-3, and 21:7,20. He is also probably the “disciple who testifies” in John 19:35 and 21:24. And in this role he is quite possibly the other disciple who is not named inJohn 1:35-40 and in John 18:15-16. See Apostles.html.6In January, 2019, I significantly rearranged the material in the Trial before the Jewish authorities section and the following section.
