What is Rocket Phonics Online?Rocket Phonics Online is a phonics teachingand learning programme that includes a widerange of reading practice books in digitalformat. These eBooks can be assigned to yourchild and read online at school or at home onany internet-enabled device.The books in Rocket Phonics Online aredesigned to appeal to children who are startingto learn to read, as well as those who arebecoming fluent readers. The books includea variety of fiction and non-fiction, written by phonics experts and children’s book writers.All the books have been carefully levelled according to book banding and other criteria,to ensure gradual progression in difficulty.Each eBook features an optional audio recording (with each word highlighted as it is read)and a variety of quizzes to check children’s understanding of what they have read.2
Getting started with Rocket Phonics Online1Log in to My Rising StarsRocket Phonics Online can be accessed from any computer, tablet or mobile phone connected tothe internet.You can log in via:https://my.risingstars-uk.comand enter the school’s uniquecentre ID, (e.g. 11246) andyour child’s login details,provided by the school.If you have any problems withthe login process, pleasecontact your child’s school.3
2Find your books in the pupil dashboardOnce the eBooks have been assignedto your child, they will appear in the pupildashboard (in the ‘My Books’ section)when you log into Rocket Phonics Online.Click on the ‘Open’ button to launch thebook on your screen. NB Make sure theRocket Phonics Online screen is maximisedso that the quiz screens can be viewedin full.Click on the rocket icon to go back to the pupil dashboard.When you have completed a book and the quizzes within it, click on the ‘Finished’ button. Thebook will then move into your ‘Books I’ve read’ section of the dashboard.The ‘My Achievements’ section contains the quiz results in the form of gold, silver orbronze stars.Your child can personalise their dashboard by choosing their own avatar, including one of theReading Planet Comet Street Kids characters!4
3Target Practice reading booksThe Target Practice eBooks provide focused reading practice of small groups of letter-sounds.All the books are fully decodable, which means they only contain letter-sounds and ‘tricky’ wordsthat the children have been taught in class. (‘Tricky’ words are also called ‘common exceptionwords’ and include words like he, she, they and were that don’t follow phonics rules.)These eBooks include self-marking comprehension quizzes and feature a page of questions at theback of each book that can be also be used to check the child’s understanding.5
4Rocket Phonics reading booksThe Rocket Phonics eBooks provide focused reading practice of wider groups ofletter-sounds. They are intended as additional reading practice once children have beentaught all the letter-sounds in a particular colour level/band.The text in these books are fully decodable, which means they only contain letter-soundsand ‘tricky’ words that the children have been taught in class. They also include selfmarking comprehension quizzes and a page of questions at the back of each book thatcan be used to check the child’s understanding.6
5Complete the quizzesEach eBook in Rocket Phonics Online has one or more ‘checkpoint’ quizzes that appearat intervals throughout the book. These checkpoint quizzes are designed to checkchildren’s understanding of the text up until that point and are indicated by theanimated quiz icon shown below.7

Support your child by reading aloudthe instructions (or click on the audio button to hear the instructions) and discussing the possibleanswers. See pages 11 and 12 for guidance on answering the different question types.Navigate from question to question by clicking on the arrow at the bottom right of the quiz.When your child has answered all the questions in a quiz, click on the clipboard icon at the endof the quiz to submit their answers and receive their score.8
5Complete the quizzes (continued)At the end of every book there is a longer quiz that checks overall understanding of the text.As with the checkpoint quizzes, click on the animated quiz icon to launch the end-of-book quiz.9
5Complete the quizzes (continued)Complete the quiz by submitting the answer to each question, and navigating throughthe quiz by clicking on the next question number in the circles below the quiz.At the end of the quiz, click on the clipboard icon to submit all the answers. This quiz isalso instantly marked, and your child is awarded a bronze, silver or gold star accordingto their score. If your child gets an answer wrong the first time, they will be given asecond attempt. The latest attempt will feed through into the final score and reporting.Your child will be given the opportunity to review their answers at the end of each quiz.10
The quiz question typesThe quizzes in Rocket Phonics Online consist of the following main question types: Multiple choice – click in the circle next to thecorrect answer.Complete the grid– as with Multiplechoice above, clickon the circles nextto the correctanswers in the grid. Fill in the gaps – click on a word and then click on thecorrect gap to place the word there. Connecting/sequencing –click on an item in the leftcolumn and then click onthe associated item in theright column to connectthem.11
Highlight the right word – click and drag tohighlight the correct word. On an iPad, holdyour finger down to highlight a single wordand drag to highlight multiple words. Matching – click on a coloured lozenge atthe top of the quiz and then click on theassociated lozenge below, which becomesthe same colour.Note: The instruction lines for the quizzes are recorded and can be played using the audio buttonclose to the instruction line.12
Results and rewards6View your results and rewardsFor each end-of-book quiz they complete, children will receive a bronze, silver orgold star, based on the proportion of correct answers they scored. These rewardscan be viewed in the ‘My achievements’ section of the child’s dashboard. 3 MarksBronze: 0–36%Silver: 37–72%Gold: 73–100% 4 MarksBronze: 0–50%Silver: 51–78%Gold: 79–100%Teachers will be able to see how pupils aredoing as a class or individually through theteacher reporting dashboard.13 5 MarksBronze: 0–59%Silver: 60–79%Gold: 80–100%
