Engaging (with the industry, destinationsand communities, via guest speakers andfield schools).Founded in 1989, the Graduate Tourism Programrecognises that the current era of rapid globalchange is increasing demands for highly skilledmanagers in the international tourism industry orassociated industries in the fields of media andcommunications, public relations, advertising,market research or development.The Graduate Tourism Program is Australia’sleading, longest-running and most innovativeindustry-focused specialist postgraduatetourism program.The strong industry integration of theprogram, together with a range of innovativeinternational study and internship opportunities,offers you a strategic advantage in establishing acareer in the managerial side of the industry.In response to the changing industrylandscape we offer two different degrees.Both masters degrees are based on the samecore units however have different electives thatlet you specialize your degree.The Master of Tourism is Australia’s longestrunning and most industry focused specialistgraduate tourism program designed to prepareyou for diverse careers within tourism andassociated industries.The course provides you with in-depthunderstanding of the structure of the tourismindustry. It facilitates the development of skillsand techniques to develop tourism policiesand practices in a global setting and to managetourism and small and medium enterprisedevelopment. The course also has a strong focuson understanding the tourism economy ofdestinations, event management and strategicmanagement issues such as maximising yield,facilitating dispersion and addressing seasonalitypatterns inherent in the industry. The course alsoincludes a partially-funded field-school tostudy the patterns of development within anemerging economy in the Asia-Pacific region.MASTER OF INTERNATIONALSUSTAINABLE TOURISMMANAGEMENTWhile sustainable tourism management practiceis embedded across both programs, the Masterof International Sustainable TourismManagement is designed for students witha special interest in developing a deeperunderstanding of environmental, economicand social sustainability strategies for thetourism industry. Sustainability represents anincreasingly influential facet of tourism planning,development, governance and management,encompassing a diversity of sectors as theindustry continues to expand globally.MASTER OF TOURISMThe United Nations World Tourism Organization(UNWTO) is also forecasting that the growth ratefor emerging economies will be double the rateof advanced economies in the years leading to2030 and that a sustainable industry cantherefore play a significant role in development.The Master of Tourism is designed for thosewho wish to focus on the marketing andmanagement side of the industry.This course draws on best practices within thebroad realm of the tourism industry, policygovernance and research, to develop a critical1This course addresses tourism’s potential to becompatible with the achievement of a range ofobjectives, including developing sustainableorganisations, urban and rural development/regeneration, natural resource management andwildlife conservation, and diversifying benefitsfrom international and domestic tourism.COURSE DURATIONDepending on your background and studyneeds, the Master of Tourism (MOT) and theMaster of International Sustainable TourismManagement (MISTM) can be taken over twoyears (96 points), eighteen months (72 points)or one year (48 points).Your required course duration can be reducedfrom the full two years by accessing credit toa maximum of 50 per cent of the courserequirements for previous graduate level studies.Credit or exemptions up to a maximum of 24points is available for a bachelor degree levelqualification in a related discipline (an arts,humanities or business degree). No previousstudy of tourism is required. A further 24 creditpoints is available for an honours degree levelqualification in a related discipline.You have the option of accessing credit asapplicable to your circumstances, or you canelect to complete the full two year (96 point)degree. International students who successfullycomplete the 96 point option may then be eligibleto apply for the Australian two year post studywork rights visa.ACCELERATED PROFESSIONALPROGRAM (ONE YEAR)An accelerated one year full time professionalcoursework program (Master of Tourism)is available for students with a relatedundergraduate degree who want to maximisetheir study time. You commence this programin late February each year (Semester 1) andby mid December your coursework programis completed with an intensive industry fieldschool to an emerging economy.This professional program is specifically suitedfor industry professionals who wish to take alimited time out of the workforce. You study thefour core units plus the elective units APG5555Digital Tourism Economy term 3 (July) andAPG5390 Contemporary Tourism inEmerging Economies (summer semester –November / December).

INDUSTRY RELEVANCETourism is regarded as one of the world’s fastestgrowing industries, and the Asia-Pacific regionhas been identified by the United Nations asthe fastest growing zone.
