COURSE DURATIONINDUSTRY RELEVANCEDepending on your background and study needs, the Masterof International Sustainable Tourism Management (MISTM)can be taken over two years (96 points), eighteen months(72 points) or one year (48 points).Tourism is regarded as one of the world’s fastest growingindustries, and the Asia-Pacific region has been identifiedby the United Nations as the fastest growing zone. Australiais widely recognised internationally for its skill in the strategicmanagement and marketing of the industry and is thereforethe logical base for you to study.Your required course duration can be reduced from the fulltwo years by accessing credit to a maximum of 50 per centof the course requirements for previous graduate level studies.Credit or exemptions up to a maximum of 24 points is availablefor a bachelor degree level qualification in a related discipline(an arts, humanities or business degree). No previous studyof tourism is required. COURSE STRUCTUREStructure shown for students undertaking a 72 point, 18 month, 3 semester degree with a bachelors degree in a relateddiscipline in the humanities, science or business. (You can commence in either semester one or two. All core units areoffered in a semi intensive block mode over 6 weeks. Inaddition, the unit addresses the role of destinations andindividual companies in stimulating demand through marketing.(This unit includes a compulsory industry field schoolto Sydney that is funded by Monash.)In the second core unit, APG5717 Applied IndustryResearch and Practice, students will be introduced toexisting secondary research resources in tourism and theprocesses of managing and conducting primary researchfrom project conception to completion.In the second semester students take two core units thatfocus on product and destination development and the riseof the digital economy. APG5077 Cultural Tourism andNature Based Product Development explores the use ofhistory and culture in the creation of unique tourism productsand the increasingly important role played by the naturalenvironment. (This unit includes a compulsory industryfield school to Tasmania that is funded by Monash.)APG5555 Digital Tourism Economy This unit looks at theimpact the rise of the digital economy is having on the globaltourism industry. Topics include, social media marketing, bigdata analysis, smart tourism, virtual reality tourism and theimpact of digital business models on industry disruption.KEY TOURISM ELECTIVE UNITSStudents have the opportunity to take the elective unitAPG5609 Sustainable Tourism Development andPlanning in intensive mode.This unit explores the supply side of the tourism industryincluding the role of tourism infrastructure, transport, planningand visitor management for sustainable tourism destinationdevelopment. The issues associated that drive both undertourismand overtourism in destinations are reviewed. STAFF ASSOCIATED WITH THE PROGRAMPROGRAM DIRECTOR:DR JEFF JARVISDr Jarvis has an industry background ininternational marketing and advertisingand has developed an internationalresearch reputation in the high yielding segment of independenttravellers and backpacker tourism following the publicationof his report The Billion Dollar Backpackers. He has deliveredkeynote presentations at the national tourism conferencesof Australia, Estonia, Fiji and Kenya. He has been invitedby the UNWTO to present at the World Tourism Conferenceand at ITB Berlin on the role independent travellers play in thedevelopment of emerging economies. Jeff has also workedin association with the Aga Kahn Development Network (AKDN)on tourism education and development in East Africa. Jeff haspublished research projects in association with industry partnerson patterns of tourism development throughout Australia as wellinternationally on Fiji, Bosnia, Cambodia, Estonia and Vietnam.He has regularly been invited to provide input to the strategicplanning process of organisations such as Visit Victoria, theCommittee for Melbourne, Tourism Australia and Tourism Fijias well as professional media commentary on the tourismindustry for the Australian Broadcasting Commission (ABC),Radio National, Radio Australia, Estonian Public Broadcasting(ETV), Sky News UK, The Age, The Herald Sun, The Australianand CNN amongst others.
