This year themedal was awarded to JerryPinkney for “The Lion and the Mouse.”He is the first individual AfricanAmerican to win the award.Jerry got a scholarship to a collegeof art. After college, he worked atdifferent jobs, including designingflower arrangements and working ata greeting card company.He worked for an illustration anddesign studio. He illustrated hisfirst children’s book as a project forthe studio. He later opened his ownstudio. When he wasin the first and second grades, theteachers had him help with visual aids.He had a reading difficulty calleddyslexia (dis-LEK-see-uh), so schoolwas hard for him. But his art evenedthings out.“I could do something otherchildren couldn’t do as well. It keptme balanced.
