What it means to become CHC certifiedThe healthcare world can be a high-risk andchallenging environment that demands a proactivecompliance approach. Being certified in thisdynamic, changing profession can help mitigatecompliance-related risks.An individual who actively holds the Certified inHealthcare Compliance (CHC) certification issomeone with knowledge of relevant regulationsand expertise in compliance processes sufficientto assist the healthcare industry in understandingand addressing legal obligations, and promoteorganizational integrity through the operation ofeffective compliance programs.The CHC exam was developed through a combinedeffort of qualified content experts and testingprofessionals. It tests a well-defined body ofknowledge representative of professional practicein the discipline. Content experts and testingprofessionals review test items to ensure theyare accurate in content, relevant to practice, andrepresentative of good testing procedures.The CHC certification program is managed by theCompliance Certification Board (CCB) , established in1999. CCB certifies compliance professionals throughits seven compliance certification programs. CCB’smission is to develop criteria for the determinationof competence in the practice of compliance at avariety of levels, and to recognize individuals meetingthese criteria.CCB has contracted with PSI Services, Inc. (PSI), toassist in the development, administration, scoring,and analysis of its exams. Five steps to CHC certificationIndividuals who meet the eligibility requirementsand who successfully pass the exam attain thetwo-year CHC designation. The CHC is an activelyheld certification in which maintenance within anindividual’s renewal period is required in order to beeligible for renewal and to ultimately maintain thecertification beyond this initial two-year renewalperiod. Failure to comply with CHC exam eligibilityrequirements and/or renewal policies and proceduresis grounds for prohibition from testing and revocationof this certification.SCCE and HCCA members and non-members alikecan become CHC certified. Membership with SCCEor HCCA is not necessary to attain, maintain, or renewa CHC certification.1. Whether you participatein a CCB pre-approved activity or one sponsored byanother organization that is not pre-approved, youwill need to submit your CEUs to CCB so they areavailable to be used toward initial certification and/orhcca-info.org /certification3

renewal. Here’s how to request and submit CEUs toCCB if you participated:·In an SCCE or HCCA in-person event youneed to request and complete the Applicationfor Continuing Education Units (CEUs) andsubmit to CCB for processing. Within fourweeks of your submission the CEUs, along witha certificate of attendance, will be placed intoyour SCCE or HCCA online account.It is up to you as the submitter to review and verifyany and all of your CEU submissions sent to CCBfor the purposes of seeking initial certification and/or renewal. View and track your CEU submissions inyour SCCE or HCCA online account.This step is especially important if you plan ontaking the exam following an SCCE or HCCA eventand intend to use the CEUs earned at the event tobe eligible to sit for the exam. The completed eventCEU application serves as your attestation that youattended the event and should be awarded CEUs.Be sure to give your completed CEU application toSCCE, HCCA or CCB staff prior to taking the exam.·4In an SCCE or HCCA webinar youcan easily log your CEUs online athcca-info.org/certification ContinuingEducation Units (CEUs). Then select“Add CEUs.”·In a CCB pre approved event or activityhosted by another organization you needto request a CCB certificate directly from thatevent sponsor. You will need the programcode at the bottom of the official CCBcertificate. This certificate will list the totalamount of CCB CEUs awarded for the event.Certificates distributed by event sponsorsare done so according to their organization’stimeline. You can use the information onthe certificate itself to easily log your CEUsonline at hcca-info.org/certification Continuing Education Units (CEUs). Then select“Add CEUs.”·In an event that was not CCB pre-approvedyou may still submit those CEUs to CCB forreview using an Individual AccreditationApplication found on page 37 and online. 3. Apply to take the examOnce you have satisfied candidacy requirements,complete and submit the Exam Application and theappropriate testing fee. There are two formats tochoose from when applying for the exam: applyingto take the test Paper and Pencil following an SCCEor HCCA event, or taking the exam via one of theComputer Based Test (CBT) options.For the CBT options, candidates can test at a local PSITesting Center or choose to take their exam from alocation of their choosing via the Remote ProctoredTest option.You can complete the Exam Application found onpages 31–36 and online.Only complete and legible Exam Applications will beaccepted. Be sure to include documentation of 20CCB CEUs, if not already on file with CCB, and includethe Exam Application fee.If applying online, go to your free, passwordprotected SCCE or HCCA account, log in and click on“Become Certified” listed under the “Certification“tab. Scroll down and select “Apply to take the exam.”Any individual who has previously participated in anSCCE or HCCA activity has a free password-protectedonline account already set up. If you don’t rememberyour login information, click “Forgot your password?”CCB and PSI comply with the Americans withDisabilities Act and strive to ensure that no individualwith a disability is deprived of the opportunity totake the exam solely by reason of that disability. Anindividual with a disability is defined by the ADA as aperson who has a physical or mental impairment thatsubstantially limits one or more major life activities, aperson who has a history or record of such impairment,or a person who is perceived by others as having suchimpairment.Verification of the disability and a statement ofthe specific type of assistance needed must bemade in writing to CCB at least 45 calendar daysprior to your desired exam date by completingthe Request for Special Exam Accommodationsand the Documentation of Disability-RelatedNeeds forms on pages 41 & 43. CCB will reviewthe submitted forms and will contact youregarding the decision for accommodations.If your application is acceptedIf your Exam Application is accepted, you will receivean email confirmation from CCB within five businessdays. If you do not receive a confirmation notice,contact CCB at 1 952.988.0141 or 888.580.8373.If CCB has accepted your Exam Application tolater find you did not meet the necessary eligibilityrequirements, you forfeit all submitted fees and,if applicable, will have your exam score voided. 4. Schedule your examOnce your application has been accepted, you willreceive an exam eligibility confirmation from CCBwhich includes your eligibility end date. If you aretaking the Paper and Pencil exam offered at an SCCEor HCCA event, your confirmation will include thelocation, date, and time of your testing. Please printand bring this confirmation with you on the day ofyour exam administration.If you are taking the CBT exam at a local PSI testingcenter or via the Remote Proctored Test option, yourconfirmation includes the information needed toschedule an exam appointment with PSI. PSI willreach out separately to confirm your exam eligibilitystatus and to request that you contact them forscheduling. PSI administers the two-hour computerbased exam by appointment only.Please make note of your PSI appointment time; youwill only receive a confirmation of the appointment ifyou provided an email address.Be sure to submit the Exam Application, as well assit for the exam, within your current exam eligibilityend date as determined by your CEUs on file withCCB. (Please note: Allow five business days to processExam Applications.)to your requested test dates to begin thescheduling process.·Located at PSI testing centers. 5. Take the exammilitary identification card with photograph.No forms of temporary identification willbe accepted.Exam day has arrived! You will have two hours tocomplete the 120-question exam. Only 100 questionswill be scored. Be sure to answer each question beforeending the exam. The exam is only given in English.Arrive up to 30 minutes early before yourscheduled exam start time. You will be requiredto download the secured browser and performa System Compatibility Check to ensure that allyour computer system items are satisfactoryto be able to proceed with your exam. If youdo not start your exam within 15 minutes afteryour scheduled exam start time, you will not beadmitted.Exam entrance rulesWhether taking the CBT exam at a PSI testingcenter, via the Remote Proctored Test option, orthe Paper and Pencil exam at an SCCE or HCCAevent, you must:··Leave all personal belongings, includingbeverages, digital watches, phones, books,papers and electronic devices in a vehicleif testing at a PSI testing center, outside ofthe room in which you are testing if optingto take the Remote Proctored Test, or in thedesignated area of the testing room at an SCCEor HCCA event.If you are taking the CBT exam at a PSI testingcenter or the Paper and Pencil exam at anSCCE or HCCA event, present two formsof current identification to gain admission.Both forms must be current and includeyour current name and signature. Any type oftemporary identification is not acceptable asthe primary form of identification.One form of identification MUST include acurrent photograph such as a driver’s licensewith photograph; state identification card withphotograph; passport; military identificationcard with photograph. No forms of temporaryidentification will be accepted.The second form of identification mustdisplay your name and signature forsignature verification (e.g., credit card withsignature, social security card with signature,employment/student ID card with signature).If your name on these documents is differentthan it appears on your identification, youmust bring proof of your name change (e.g.,marriage license, divorce decree, or courtorder).·8If you are testing via the Remote ProctoredTest option, present one form of currentidentification to gain admission. Print and bring a copy ofthis email notification with you. Note you mustarrive by the specified check-in time in theemail notification. If you arrive late, you will notbe admitted.You are prohibited from misrepresenting youridentity or falsifying information to obtain admissionto the exam. If there is any doubt surrounding youridentity, you will be turned away from the exam andwill forfeit your exam fees.
