STUDIES RELATED TO THE MEXICAN COOP PROGRAMThe analytical results presented in this report are part of a largercooperative program between the U.S. Geological Survey and the Consejo deRecursos Minerales of Mexico. The program, initiated in 1973, was designed toevaluate the use of a multidisciplinary (geology, geochemistry, andgeophysics) approach to mineral exploration in the Sonoran environment. Theproject was initially funded by the government of Mexico, the U.S. GeologicalSurvey, and the U.S. National Science Foundation.INTRODUCTIONIn the spring and fall of 1978 we conducted a detailed geochemical surveyof the Tio Flaco area, El Correo quadrangle, northern Sonora, Mexico.ooThe Tio Flaco study area comprises about 4 mi (10 knr) in the center ofthe El Correo quadrangle, northern Sonora, Mexico and lies about 25 mi (40 km)southwest of Nogales, Arizona (fig. 1). Access to the vicinity of the studyarea is provided on Mexican National Highway 15 south for 12 miles from theinternational border and then west-southwest for 13 miles on an unnamed gradedroad. Access to the Tio Flaco study area is provided by a trail beginning atthe settlement of La Cienega.Rocks outcropping within the study area represent the central region of alarge volcanic pile located in the central part of the El Correo quadrangle. The regional geologic units are latitic, probably of Mesozoic age, into whichrhyolitic units have been emplaced, some of which are intrusive and othersextrusive. Quartzite rests unconformably on the volcanic rocks. Regionallynorthwest-trending faults are cut by north-northeast-trending faults.Tertiary and younger gravels fill grabens formed by these faults and lap ontothe older rocks. The topographic relief in the study area is about 780 ft (240 m), with amaximum elevation of 4,460 ft (1,360 m). The ground surface is an upliftedregion deeply incised by intermittent streams. Interstream uplands arecovered by live oak, mesquite, and cacti. The climate is semiarid.METHODS OF STUDYSample CollectionWe collected stream sediment samples at 401 sites (plate 1) and soilsamples at 622 sites (plate 2). We analyzed 401 stream-sediment samples and622 soil samples, for a sampling density of about 1 sample per .01 mi for thestream sediment and about 1 sample per .006 mi for the soil.Stream-sediment samplesAnalyses of the stream-sediment samples represent the chemistry of therock material eroded from the drainage basin upstream from each sample site.Such information is useful in identifying those basins which containconcentrations of elements that may be related to mineral deposits.

The stream-sediment samples consisted of active alluvium collectedprimarily from streams no longer than 200 m. Each sample was composited fromseveral localities within an area that may extend as much as 30 ft from thesite plotted on the map.Soil samplesThe use of soil samples enabled us to obtain a greater sampling densityin areas that were found to be anomalous in the elements of interest from thestream sediment sampling program. Soil was sampled on the ridges and wideinterstream areas of the central part of the Tio Flaco area. This area, fromthe analytical data of the stream sediment samples, appeared to be the centerof a large hydrothermal system extending over much of the El Correo area. The stream sediment and soil samples were sieved at the collection sitethrough a 30-mesh screen and the minus-30-mesh material was retained foranalysis. The stream-sediment and soil samples were later pulverized withceramic plates to minus 0.15 mm.Sample Analysis by the Spectrographic MethodWe analyzed the stream-sediment and soil samples for 31 elements using asemiquantitative, direct-current arc emission spectrographic method (Grimesand Marranzino, 1968) (tables 1 and 2). Spectrographic results were obtainedby visual comparison of spectra derived from the sample against spectraobtained from standards made from pure oxides and carbonates. Standardconcentrations are geometrically spaced over any given order of magnitude ofconcentration as follows: 100, 50, 20, 10, and so forth. Samples whoseconcentrations are estimated to fall between those values are assigned valuesof 70, 30, 15, and so forth. The precision of the analytical method isapproximately plus or minus one reporting unit at the 83 percent confidencelevel and plus or minus two reporting units at the 96 percent confidence level(Motooka and Grimes, 1976). Values determined for the major elements (iron, magnesium, calcium, and titanium) are given in weight percent; all others aregiven in parts per million (micrograms/gram) (table 3).Gold, cadmium, niobium, antimony, tungsten, and thorium were not presentin detectable quantities in either the stream-sediment or soil samples.Arsenic was not detected in any of the soil samples.REFERENCES CITEDGrimes, D.
