THE FIRST BOOKOFMOSES, CALLED GENESISCHAPTER 1God creates heaven and earth, 1; the light, 3; the firmament, 6; separates the dry land, 9; forms the sun, moon, and stars, 14;fish and birds, 20; cattle, wild beasts, and creeping things, 24; creates man in his own image, blesses him, 26; grants the fruitsof the earth for food, 29.1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. 2 And the earth was withoutform and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved uponthe face of the waters. 3 And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. 4 And God sawthe light, that it was good, and God divided the light from the darkness. 5 And God called thelight, Day, and the darkness he called, Night, and the evening and the morning were the firstday.6 And God said, "Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide thewaters from the waters." 7 And God made the firmament and divided the waters which wereunder the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament. And it was so. 8 AndGod called the firmament, Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.9 And God said, "Let the waters under the heaven be gathered into one place, and let thedry land appear." And it was so. 10 And God called the dry land, Earth, and the collection ofwaters he called, Seas. And God saw that it was good. 11 And God said, "Let the earth bringforth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit-tree yielding fruit after its kind, whose seed isin itself, upon the earth." And it was so. 12 And the earth brought forth grass, herbs yieldingseed after its kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after its kind. And Godsaw that it was good. 13 And the evening and the morning were the third day.14 And God said, "Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day fromthe night, and let them be for signs, for seasons, for days, and years. 15 And let them be forlights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth." And it was so. 16 And Godmade two great lights: the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night. Healso made the stars. 17 And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon theearth, 18 To rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness. AndGod saw that it was good. 19 And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.20 And God said, "Let the waters abundantly bring forth the moving creature that has lifeand the bird that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven." 21 And Godcreated the great sea-creatures and every living creature that moves, which the waters broughtforth abundantly after their kind, and every winged bird after his kind. And God saw that it wasgood. 22 And God blessed them, saying, "Be fruitful, multiply, fill the waters in the seas, and letbirds multiply in the earth." 23 And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.24 And God said, "Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind: cattle, thecreeping animal, and the beast of the earth after his kind." And it was so. 25 And God made thebeast of the earth after his kind, cattle after their kind, and every animal that creeps upon theearth after his kind. And God saw that it was good.26 And God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness, and let them havedominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, over the cattle, over all the earth, and over every creeping animal that creeps upon the earth." 27 So God created man in his ownimage. In the image of God he created him: male and female he created them. 28 And Godblessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful, multiply, replenish the earth, and subdue it.And have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the bird of the air, and over every living animalthat moves upon the earth." 29 And God said, "Behold, I have given you every herb bearingseed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in which is the fruit of a treeyielding seed. To you it shall be for food. 30 And to every beast of the earth, to every bird of theair, and to every animal that creeps upon the earth, in which is life, I have given every green6

herb for food." And it was so. 31 And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it wasvery good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.References[v.27]: Quoted in Matthew 19:4; Mark 10:6.CHAPTER 2The first Sabbath, 1-3. Further particulars concerning the manner of creation, 4-7. The planting of the garden of Eden and itssituation, 8-14; man is placed in it; and the tree of knowledge only forbidden, 15-17. The animals are named by Adam, 18. Themaking of woman and the institution of marriage, 21-25.1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. 2 And on theseventh day God ended his work which he had made. And he rested on the seventh day from allhis work which he had made. 3 And God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in ithe had rested from all his work which God created and made.4 These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in theday that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens. 5 And no plant of the field was yet inthe earth and no herb of the field had yet grown, because the LORD God had not caused it torain on the earth and there was not a man to till the ground. 6 But there went up a mist fromthe earth and watered the whole face of the ground. 7 And the LORD God formed man of thedust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life. And man became a livingsoul. 8 And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden, and there he put the man whomhe had formed. 9 And out of the ground the LORD God made every tree to grow that is pleasantto the sight and good for food, and also the tree of life in the midst of the garden, and the treeof knowledge of good and evil.10 And a river went out of Eden to water the garden. And from there it was parted andbecame into four heads. 11 The name of the first is Pison, which compasses the whole land ofHavilah, where there is gold. 12 And the gold of that land is good. There is bdellium and theonyx-stone. 13 And the name of the second river is Gihon, the same that compasses the wholeland of Cush. 14 And the name of the third river is Hiddekel, which flows toward the east ofAssyria. And the fourth river is Euphrates.15 And the LORD God took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and tokeep it. 16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, "Of every tree of the garden youmay freely eat. 17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, you shall not eat from it.For in the day that you eat from it you shall surely die."18 And the LORD God said, "It is not good that the man should be alone. I will make him ahelper suitable for him." 19 And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of thefield and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. Andwhatever Adam called every living creature, that was its name. 20 And Adam gave names to allcattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field, but for Adam, a helper suitable forhim was not found. 21 And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam and he slept, and he took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh in its place. 22 And the rib, which the LORDGod had taken from man, he made into a woman, and brought her to the man.23 And Adam said, "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh. She shall be calledWoman, because she was taken out of man."24 Therefore, a man shall leave his father and his mother and shall cleave to his wife, andthey shall be one flesh. 25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were notashamed.References[v.2]: Quoted in Hebrews 4:4. The punishment of mankind, 16-20. Their first clothing,21. Their expulsion from paradise, 22-24.1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field which the LORD God hadmade, and he said to the woman, "Has God truly said, 'You shall not eat of every tree of thegarden'?" 2 And the woman said to the serpent, "We may eat of the fruit of the trees of thegarden, 3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, 'Youshall not eat of it, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.'" 4 And the serpent said to the woman,"You shall not surely die. 5 For God knows, that in the day you eat of it, your eyes shall beopened and you shall be as gods, knowing good and evil." 6 And when the woman saw that thetree was good for food and that it was pleasant to the eyes and a tree to be desired to make onewise, she took some of its fruit and ate, and gave also to her husband with her, and he ate. 7And the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And theysewed fig-leaves together and made coverings for themselves.8 And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day.And Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the treesof the garden. 9 And the LORD God called to Adam and said to him, "Where are you?" 10 Andhe said, "I heard your voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hidmyself." 11 And he said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree ofwhich I commanded you that you should not eat?" 12 And the man said, "The woman whom yougave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I ate." 13 And the LORD God said to thewoman, "What is this that you have done?" And the woman said, "The serpent beguiled me, andI ate."14 And the LORD God said to the serpent, "Because you have done this, you are cursedabove all cattle and above every beast of the field. Upon your belly you shall go, and dust youshall eat all the days of your life.15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman and between your seed and her seed.It shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel."16 To the woman he said, "I will greatly multiply your sorrow and your conception. Insorrow you shall bring forth children. And your desire shall be to your husband, and he shallrule over you."17 And to Adam he said, "Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and haveeaten of the tree of which I commanded you, saying, 'You shall not eat of it,' the ground iscursed for your sake. In sorrow you shall eat of it all the days of your life.18 Thorns and thistles it shall also bring forth to you, and you shall eat the herb of thefield.19 In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread until you return to the ground, for out of ityou were taken. For you are dust, and to dust you shall return."20 And Adam called his wife's name Eve because she was the mother of all living. 21 ForAdam and also for his wife the LORD God made coats of skins and clothed them.22 And the LORD God said, "Behold, the man has become as one of us, to know good andevil. And now, lest he should put forth his hand, take also of the tree of life, and eat and liveforever—" 23 Therefore, the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden to till theground from which he was taken. 24 So he drove out the man, and he placed Cherubim at theeast of the garden of Eden and a flaming sword which turned every way to keep the way of thetree of life.CHAPTER 4The birth, occupation, and offering of Cain and Abel, 1-7. He was the father of all those who handle the harpand pipe. 22 And Zillah, she also bore Tubalcain, a forger of every cutting instrument of brassand iron. And the sister of Tubalcain was Naamah.23 And Lamech said to his wives, “Adah and Zillah, hear my voice. Wives of Lamech, listento my speech. For I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt.24 If Cain shall be avenged seven-fold, truly Lamech seventy-seven-fold."25 And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and called his name Seth, for shesaid, "God has appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew." 26 And to Seth, tohim there was also born a son, and he called his name Enos. And the door of the ark you shall set in itsside.
