CurriculumThe curriculum – what students should know and be able to do makes standards come alive for students. All students haveaccess to an academically rigorous curriculum that inspiresstudents to think and contribute high quality work to authenticaudiences beyond the classroom. The curriculum fully integratesacademic and social emotional learning opportunities for allstudents, including diverse learners, English learners, andadvanced learners. The school regularly examines thecurriculum to check alignment to standards and opportunities forall students to meet those standards.

Rigorous Student TaskThe school regularly examines student work - what studentsare being asked to do on in their classrooms - across grades orcourses in all content areas. Examining the texts and tasksstudents experience provides the necessary insight to gaugerigor and illuminate how the standards are actualizedprompting the question whether or not approaches support thetrue spirit of college and career readiness. (adapted from TheEducation Trust – Equity in Motion Series)

Professional LearningProfessional Learning includes sufficient time, support, and ‘safe practice’ space to internalize new knowledge tochange practice and beliefs. Adults persevere incollaboration with their colleagues to innovate andimprove implementation of new practices.

Student VoiceStudents are interested and engaged in learning, invested in their school, and contributing to theircommunity. The school provides early and ongoingexposure to a wide range of extracurricular activitiesand rigorous courses and programming.

Relational TrustThe school is characterized by high levels of relational trustbetween all school participants - the “glue” or the essentialelement that coordinates and supports the processes essentialto effective school improvement. Interactions, both betweenthe teacher and students and among students, are highlyrespectful, reflecting genuine warmth and caring. Studentscontribute to high levels of civility. Interactions are sensitiveto students as individuals, appropriate to the ages anddevelopment of individual students, and to the context of theclass. The net result of interactions is that of academic andpersonal connections among students and adults.

Achievement vs. Growth Achievement and progress are often used interchangeably, but their meanings are actually very different. Achievement is a point-in-time measure that evaluateshow well students perform against a standard. In contrast, progress is measured by how much "growth"students make over time, typically from one year to thenext. Both of these measures are important, but theyprovide different information.
