Ms. Koch workedtirelesslytorevampcompletelytheInternational Studies major when it was movedto the College. Her friendship to all anddedication to students are greatly missed.This newsletter provides details about theCollege’s newly opened Murray InvestmentLab where investment students will be able touse the newly acquired Bloomberg Terminal tomanage the Tennessee Valley AuthorityInvestment Challenge Fund. The students andfaculty have been using the lab to readythemselves to give their annual report inNashvilleonOctober28.Another piece of excellent news is the hiring ofDr. Tommy Cates in his new role as theHendrix Chair of Excellence in FreeEnterprise. Dr. Cates has hit the groundrunningNumber 4by working with the College of Agricultureand Natural Science on a series of seminarsfocused on the study of entrepreneurship.As the latest inclusion from The PrincetonReview shows, our College continues to beregarded among the “Best 294 BusinessSchools” in its 2017 publication. Dr. Anderson Starling, AssistantProfessor of Political Science, was O’Brien’sfaculty mentor.Two CBGA Students ReceiveKelly W. Murray Excellence inPortfolio Management AwardsCasey Dowty (left) of Fulton, KY, and SeanO’Brien (right) of Martin, received the Paul andMartha Meek Leadership Award(s) during thespring 2016 commencement. They are picturedwith Dr. Margret Toston who is the ViceChancellor for Student Affairs.The purpose of this award is to recognizestudents who have shown leadership qualitiesduring their time at UT Martin. While Dowtyearned her degree in sociology, O’Brien earnedhis bachelor of science in CBGA as a politicalscience major. He was active on campus as amember of the varsity rifle team as well asthrough Sigma Chi Fraternity, UniversityScholars Organization, Student GovernmentAssociation, and various community-serviceprojects.As a key part of the University Scholarsprogram, O’Brien undertook a two-yearundergraduate research project and presentedhis work to the Southern Political ScienceMicayla Gray (center left) of Sikeston, and RyanStevenson (center right) of Milan received theKelly W. Murray Excellence in PortfolioManagement Awards via votes cast by theirclassmates in Spring 2016. This award wasnamed for the late son of Dr. Sandra andWilliam Murray. The award recognizes theeffort and dedication of managing the UTMartin Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA)stock portfolio in the TVA InvestmentChallenge.The challenge is an event supported by TVAand 25 universities to provide real-worldexperience in portfolio management. Graygraduated in the Spring with a Bachelor’s ofScience degree in agriculture. Stevenson is asenior finance major in CBGA. CBGA Newsletter3Fall 2016Students Visit DC for Travel StudyBrimm and Graubner NamedOutstanding Collegiate FellowsThe FMA Collegiate Fellows Programrecognizes outstanding FMA chapter memberswho made service contributions to theirchapter throughout the year. This year’srecipients included two from the UT Martincampus: Erica Brimm, accting. & finance major(above left), and Mark Graubner, finance major(pictured above right).CBGA: Student-focusedexcellence!A group of students visited Washington, DC,as part of a Political Science Travel StudyCourse from May 9–14. The trip providedstudents the opportunity to visit DC and learnabout career opportunities from people livingand working there. The students attendedTennessee Tuesday, sponsored by SenatorsAlexander and Coker, on May 10.Thestudents also visited the Supreme Court, theWhite House, the Smithsonian Museums, theHolocaust Museum, the Newseum, andattended a Washington Nationals baseballgame.The students heard from Senators about theirrecent work in Congress and spoke withSenator Lamar Alexander about the upcomingpresidential race. CBGA Newsletter4Fall 2016Tennessee Society of Certified PublicAccountants Gains New MembersThe Tennessee Society of Certified PublicAccountants accepted 35 new students into itsorganization from The University of TennesseeMartin. The TSCPA is an association dedicatedto the advancement of the accountingprofession in Tennessee. The group awards 250,000 in scholarships to accounting studentsin Tennessee.One of the 2016 UTM recipients, Jessica Davis,stated that the scholarship took away much ofthe stress of paying for school.Students from UTM who received scholarshipswere (top l to r) Andrew Terrell of Union City;Emily McCartney of South Fulton, CleveBirdwell of Springfield, Jessica Davis ofHuntingdon; and Carrie Turner of Paris.Hershberger Wins MKT ContestStudents in the summer MKT 205 coursecreated an advertisement to promote CBGAstudent organizations. The students submittedtheir ideas as homework assignments and Dr.Melanie Bruce, the course instructor, and Dr.Ross Dickens, CBGA Dean, selected a winner.Junior marketing major Jacob Hershbergerwon the contest and his idea was featured hbergerwith entry (r)###Harrah Completes InternshipCBGA Career Day!November 29:00 – 2:00University CenterLogan Harrah, senior finance major fromMammoth Spring, AR, took part in a taxinternship over the summer of 2016. Theinternship was with LWJ Management inArlington,TN.TheinternshipbeganwithHarrah completing simpletasks such as bookkeepingfor various companies andprogressed to his filing taxreturns.Harrah highlyrecommendsthatallstudents partake in an internship, as thisexperience made him appreciate the materialcovered in classes at UT Martin.

The article is co-authoredwith two of Foltz’s colleagues from ECU.HaddadPaperPresentsDr.MahmoudHaddad, professor offinance, presented apaper titled, “FinancialStress Index and theGCC Banks” at aconference in Portland,OR, in July with a coauthor.

UT Martin ranked 15th in this listing.The ranking process is based on informationgathered from major publications (i.e. Forbesmagazine, Princeton Review). CBGA Newsletter7Fall 2016CBGA Murry Investment Lab RehabFor the past 15 years, finance students havemanaged a stock portfolio as a part of theTennessee Valley Authority’s InvestmentChallenge Program. UT Martin students havebeen among the top performers in thecompetition. To assist with the challenge,students now have access to the new KellyMurray Investment Lab, which is equippedwith a professional trading platform and realtime stock data. The portfolio managementprogram and the Kelly Murray lab providestudents with hands-on experience in finance.The lab is sponsored by the family of CBGAalumni Kelly William Murray.Professor Davis Rides for RoswellThe following note was sent from Dr. DexterDavis,AssociateProfessorofSportManagement, to CBGA colleagues at thecompletion of his service endeavor:“Just wanted to let you know I survived theRide for Roswell. We rolled out of the Roswellparking lot at about 6:10 a.m. and finished the44 miles about 3 hours later. I was blessed to beriding with some elite amateur cyclists andthey pulled me along at a great pace. Our small6-man team was a part of over 7,000 riders in avariety of different rides yesterday, over 5million was raised for cancer treatment andprevention research. Our team raised almost 10,000! Not bad for six guys! As you can seefrom our "cleaned up" photo, we representedUTM and CBGA pretty well in the post rideevent [note the CBGA t-shirts]. Thank you allfor your thoughts and support as I undertookthis adventure to honor my friend Vic's latewife, Lisa.”MMIS students gave the basement bulletin board amakeover after surveying 100 students aboutcontent. The board was donated to the Dept. ofMarketing, Management, and Information Systemsby Dr. Ed Knight.
