Greetings!Family WellnessBased on the Disney film and J.M. Barrie's enchanting play, Disney's Peter Pan JR. is a modern version of thetimeless tale about a boy who wouldn't grow up. with no flying required! The musical includes new arrangements of classic Disney songs and a story featuring one rousing adventure after another.Wendy Darling loves to tell stories to her brothers, Michael and John. But when her father announces shemust move out of the nursery, Peter Pan comes to visit the children and whisks them away to Neverland.Their journey introduces them to the Lost Boys, Mermaids, Indians and even the infamous pirate, CaptainHook! It’s Peter to the rescue when Wendy is taken captive by the dreaded captain, who has his own sinister plans in mind for our hero.Winner of 9 Tony Awards when it debuted in 1964, Fiddler On The Roof has touched audiences worldwidewith its humor, warmth and honesty. Set in the little village of Anatevka, the story centers on Tevye, a poordairyman, his wife Golde and his five daughters. With the help of a colorful and tight-knit Jewish community, Tevye tries to protect his daughters and instill them with traditional values. Rich in historical and ethnicdetail, Fiddler On The Roof's universal theme of tradition cuts across barriers of race, class, nationality andreligion, leaving audiences crying tears of laughter, joy and sadness.Make sure to take your families and enjoy both of these fabulous musicals!Tickets for both shows are available at the Bashaw School. Tickets are 10 for adults and 5 for students. Look in Community Connections for further information about the shows!I recently had the privilege of attending an invitational Roots Of Empathy seminar in Edmonton. Thefounder, Mary Gordan was addressing the room and gave an inspired and impassioned talk to those in attendance, regarding emotional literacy and the impact Roots Of Empathy has had on children in Canadaand internationally. It was a true honour to attend and I felt very inspired and grateful for the experience. We will hopefully have Roots Of Empathy in the classrooms again this fall.Literacy has a prominent role in our schools and community. There are severalgreat programs in place in the school, at the library and at BDSS. Family literacy was promoted at the school recently thanks to the partnership of BashawAdult Learning Council, Bashaw School and BDSS. Families had an opportunityto learn literacy and math games to enhance targeted skills and memory fortheir children, by playing the award winning Box Cars One Eyed Jacks series. Itwas a blast and families were able to take home kits and resources to continuein their own homes. There is also a book bank being set up for anyone to comeand get new or gently used books at BDSS. Families can take these books homefree of charge to build on family literacy time and learning at home.Books For Babies:We are also starting a new program called Books For Babies. Please look inCommunity Connections for more information regarding dates, times, registration.Books for Babies is a program that encourages parents of infants between birth and18 months to share books with their babies. It supports all families in developing early literacy and language experiences and promotes healthy family relationships.A four-week program delivered in a group setting. Each family is provided with a sturdy book bag, books and easy-to-read informationWays to enjoy books together are modeled and sharedParents are introduced to their local library, book bank, BDSS, Bashaw Adult Learning and other available resourcesParticipants have an opportunity for informal, social time with other parents arounda light snack

Bashaw’s Childrens Book BankStudies have shown that book ownership in childhood enhances both early childhood literacy and lateracademic success. Many families find that they have books that their children have outgrown or publishers and retailers have books that they cannot use. The Book Bank will connect demand and supplyand provides children and families with the tools that they need to develop and build their literacy. TheBook Bank makes book ownership available to all children, regardless of family income. It is our hopethat a visit to the Book Bank will be much like a visit to a favourite bookstore, except that the books arefree of charge.BASHAW BOOK DRIVE: April 20161. Many families don’t know what to do with the children’s books their own kids have outgrown. A community book drive creates an opportunity to give beloved children’sbooks a second life. Families can take pride in knowing that other families throughoutBashaw and area will cherish this otherwise dormant resource.2. It’s a great way for families to discuss the idea of resource sharing with others.3. A fun way to be more environmentally conscious! Participating families help reduce thenumber of books that end up in landfill through responsibly recycling the books they/their families have outgrown.WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FORChildren’s books for kids aged birth to 12 years oldTeen or young adult books ages 13- 18 years oldChildren’s books printed within the last ten years, so a print date of 2005 - present.Children’s books in new or gently used condition – no missing covers, torn pages, orpages with colouring/writing on them.*A great rule of thumb: if you would gift it to someone, then it’s good enough for our use.Books can be dropped off at Bashaw Neighbourhood Place!Monday thru Friday 9:00 – 4:00 p.m.
