I hopeyou’ll enjoy some of this month’s events.August is also a time for many Anishinabe wholive along the lake water to prepare for the wildrice harvest. It was called by many differentnames such as Manomin, Mahnomen andManoomin.By whatever name, it is considered "A Gift fromthe Great Spirit .a sacred component in theirculture. The rice is harvested with a canoe: one person“knocks" rice into the canoe with two smallpoles ("knockers") while the other paddlesslowly or uses a push pole. For these groups, this harvest is an importantcultural (andoften economic) event.Time to think of the delicious, healthyrecipes you’ll enjoy the year ‘round.Detail of Wabigon (flower).Birch Bite Biting, Pg. 3Page 7Page 2NDN BuzzAnnouncementsPage 3NativeEvents,AuditionsPage 4FM Eventsand JobsPage 5Red Road Picnic& Native ArtistsOpportunitiesPage 6Pow-WowsPage 7NativeCommunityPicnic Flyer
