Caldwell, IV, President ofGeorgia Military College, and Mr. Dudley Rowe, Chairman of theGeorgia Military College Foundation, are pleased to announcethe appointment of Mr. Mark Strom to the position of Senior VicePresident for College Relations and Executive Director of the GMCFoundation effective October 1, 2014.As Senior Vice President and Executive Director, Mr. Strom isresponsible for overseeing the various College Relations functions, including Development and Advancement, Alumni Relationsand Public Affairs, as well as serving as Executive Director of theFoundation.Lieutenant General Caldwell stated he is very excited to haveMr. Strom lead the Office of College Relations. “Mark is exactlythe right person to be assuming this critical leadership role in ourinstitution. He will take what is a solid foundation and move it tothe next level. His intellect along with his great interpersonal skillsand drive will greatly benefit GMC.”Mr. Rowe remarked, “The foundation leadership is excited tohave Mark as a key member of its team. His knowledge of GMCand his broad experience in the business and related communitywill be a significant asset as we work to align the foundation’sgoals with General Caldwell’s Vision 2029.”Mr. Strom says he is excited to be joining an already successful College Relations team and looks forward to taking on thechallenges of substantially growing the endowment, providingever improving outreach to alumni, and raising the awareness ofGeorgia Military College across the state and beyond. “GeneralCaldwell has articulated his Vision 2029, defining what GeorgiaMilitary College will look like at its150 year mark. The Office of College Relations and the GMC Foundation are strategic partners that,working together with the institution, will ensure that this vision isachieved and that future generations of students will continue tobenefit from the character-based education delivered in our halls.”Mr. Strom most recently served GMC as Senior Vice Presidentfor Business Development and Chief Human Resources Officer.Prior to joining GMC in 2008, Mr. Strom served as Vice President of Human Resources for a multinational aerospace materialsfirm, based out of the Charlotte, NC, with operations throughoutthe United States and Europe. He graduated from ClemsonUniversity in 1984 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and in 1987 with a Masters of Industrial Education degree inHuman Resource Development. Mark and his wife, Julie, residein Milledgeville, Georgia with their daughter, Mattison, and son,Walker. Mattison currently attends the GMC Prep School as a 7thgrader and Walker is looking forward to becoming a GMC studentwhen he enters 6th grade.

Caldwell says, “While here, students are inspired togo anywhere.’”ask questions, then challenged to explore solutions and hone theirGMC CELEBRATES ITS135th ANNIVERSARYGeorgia Military College celebrated its 135th Anniversary on October 15, 2014*commemorating more than a century of excellence in education.GMC was established on October 14,1879 by act of the GeorgiaGeneral Assembly and was originally called Middle Georgia Military and Agricultural College. In 1900, the name of the school waschanged to Georgia Military College.The Old Capitol Building, then as now, is the main college facilityand sits on the highest point within the Milledgeville city limits. Instudents. Dr. W. S. Dudley, the school’s first president, guided thisclass.In 1950, the War Department designated GMC a “Military JuniorCollege.” Today, GMC is one of only five United States MilitaryJunior Colleges and has been designated by the Georgia GeneralAssembly as “The Military Junior College of Georgia.”1880, the school’s first session opened with 219 male and female* Celebration was delayed due to inclement weather.4The Cadence SPRING 2015SPRING 2015 The Cadence5

G M CA N N I V E R S A R YG M CGeorgia Military College Celebrates135th Anniversary of First Meeting of theGMC Board of TrusteesGeorgia Military College honored theschool’s Board of Trustees (past andpresent) with a luncheon on October22, 2014, the annivesary of the firstmeeting of the board in 1879 . Theevent featured a special presentation by members ofMAJ Karen Grimes’ Georgia History class who highlighted the many milestones of the past 135 years.The keynote speaker was Mr. Randy New, Chairmanof the GMC Board of Trustees.For generations, Georgia Military College hasstood as a unique educational institution within thestate of Georgia. Through legislative acts of 1920 and1922, the school was designated a corporate bodywith a publicly elected Board of Trustees.The Georgia General Assembly provided for aseven-member board to be elected from and by thecitizens of Milledgeville. They are elected every fouryears and represent each city council district. Thetrustees are prohibited from holding any other publicoffice during their term. The Milledgeville Mayorserves on the board because GMC is a city charteredschool.The board has the authority to determine policyand conduct of the college and to govern financialand personnel matters. This license also includesoverseeing the prep school curriculum andarticulation agreements for the college.The board consists of a chairman, vice-chairman,secretary/treasurer and four members-at-large. Thedesire to help the school achieve set goals is expectedfrom each trustee, but a personal connection toGMC is not required.2014-2015 GMC Board of Trusteesgrowth in the online programs and expansion of allcampuses throughout the state. The mostmemorable event in his tenure was the opening ofthe Usery Building-the first building dedicatedsolely to the prep school.New holds an Associate of Business Administration from GMC and a Bachelor of BusinessAdministration in Economics and Managementfrom Georgia College (GC). He is the co-owner ofBayne’s Army Store, managing partner in VBRNInvestments, and a partner in the Old Capitol GunClub and BNS Properties.He is a member of many organizationsincluding the Milledgeville/Baldwin Chamber ofCommerce, Milledgeville Main Street, the NationalWild Turkey Federation, Ducks Unlimited, and theNational Rifle Association. He is well-known intown for his volunteerism, especially for themanagement of the Empty Stocking Fund (ESF). In2013, the ESF, funded completely throughdonations, provided holiday meals to overthree-hundred families in need.New is a member of Black Springs BaptistChurch and enjoys spending time with his family,including grandson Jared New. In his down time, heappreciates fishing, hunting, and shooting.Randy New, ChairmanGMC is truly a familytradition for Milledgevillenative and ChairmanRandy New. A graduate ofboth the prep school (’71)and junior college (’73), heRandy Newmet his wife of 39 years,Cynthia (’72 &’74), at thehistoric campus. Their children, daughter Diana(prep school ‘00), and son Corey (’02 &‘04)continued the legacy into the new millennium.A trustee for more than twenty years, Newviews his role in GMC’s future as one of promoting6The Cadence SPRING 2015George HoganVice ChairmanA much-respectedbusinessman and longtimeGMC advocate, ViceChairman George Hogan,is currently in his fifth termGeorge Hoganas a trustee. A native of Milledgeville, he is adistinguished Vietnam veteran having served in theUnited States Army during the years 1966-1968.Hogan owns and operates George Hogan & SonsLogging and Tree Service Company. He is married toPatricia Ann Hogan and together they have fivechildren, thirteen grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. Hogan was the first African-Americanofficer for the Ga State Patrol to work within theMiddle Ga area. He served alongside secret serviceagents guarding President Jimmy Carter after thefamily left the White House and returned to Plains, Ga.During his tenure, he has served with four mayorsand has witnessed remarkable changes to the maincampus. “The renovations of the older buildings alongwith the construction of new facilities has been justamazing,” stated Hogan.He says the growth of online programs andexpansion of campuses across the state has made acollege education accessible to all who desire it. “It ismy job, as a trustee, to promote this institution’s assetsand ensure that the public know what an excellenteducation can be obtained here,” added Hogan.In addition to running his business and serving as atrustee, Hogan is involved in numerous organizationsincluding the Middle Georgia Region DevelopmentCorporation. He is currently a member of theAmerican Legion Post 523, the NAACP, and acharter member of the 100 Black Men of Milledgeville/Baldwin County. His charitable contributionsinclude being a founding board member for theMilledgeville Habitat for Humanity. He has been amember of Trinity CME Christian Church for oversixty years and is president of the Baldwin SouthernChristian Leadership Conference.Doris RenfroeSecretary/TreasurerMs. Doris Renfroe is anative of Milledgeville and hasserved on the board for eightyears. She graduated fromBoddie High School in 1958Doris Renfroeand attended GMC as a nontraditional business student.An award winning employee, she retired fromCentral State Hospital after working 34 years as asecretary. She believes her service on the board helpsfurther the education of the school’s students. Shestresses, “Education is imperative as it allows people togrow and have a secure future.”In her seventies, she goes to the gym nearly everyday of the week to stay fit and feel young. A widow,Renfroe has two children, a son Grayson Renfroe, anda daughter Debra Lango.Reverend Tony FraleyMember-at-large,Reverend Tony Fraley, bringsdecades of experience incommunity activism andleadership to the board. Aformer GMC student inRev. Tony FraleyGeneral Studies, he holds aBachelor of Theology from American TheologicalSeminary and is the pastor of Vaughn Chapel BaptistChurch.Elected in 2013, Fraley is in his first term and seeshis role on the board as a steward of the school. Hesays, “As a trustee, my role is one of a wise steward whois tasked with identifying and recommendingopportunities that foster growth and sustainability.”As a trustee, Fraley’s most memorable event wasthe historical penning of the partnership betweenGMC and Fort Valley State University. He believesthis connection provides another opportunity for localstudents to continue their education within theMiddle Georgia area.Fraley has extensive experience in serving thecommunity in various leadership positions. He is thepresident of the Baldwin County 21st CenturyMinisterial Alliance, co-owner of Voyage of Hope,founder of Crack Prevention-the Family andCommunity Conservation Center, and serves on theRiverbend Correctional Facility Board of Directors.He is a former board member for the Salvation Armyand the Adult Education Program.Fraley enjoys family life with wife Daphane, sonLaVata Antonio Fraley and daughter Shameka Fraley.He is a proud grandfather to grandsons Darien Fraleyand LaVata Antonio Fraley, Jr. and to granddaughterJaKia Fraley. In his spare time, he enjoys woodworking,traveling and baking.Alberto C. Martinez, Jr.Member-at-large AlbertoC. Martinez, Jr. is a graduate ofGMC prep school (’70) andreceived his undergraduateand law degree from theUniversity of Georgia. HisAlberto Martinez, Jr.brother Sandy (’73) anddaughter Mary Beth (’06) are both graduates of the prepschool as well. Making GMC a family affair, brotherGeorge taught Physics at the school for several years.A member since 2000, Martinez views his role asone in support of the president and staff running theschool and in planning and providing for its future. Hestates, “We are a group of people who care aboutGMC and are willing to volunteer our time to help seeto it that the school has the best leadership andA N N I V E R S A R Yadministration possible.”For Martinez, it is hard to choose one singularfavorite event that he has been involved with as a boardmember. He believes the most important accomplishments have originated from a cumulative effort tobring about growth and change. “In my fourteen yearson the board, there has been an impressive transformation of the main campus-the new and modernbuildings, the Grant Parade Field, the athletic fields-atruly amazing makeover,” he said.Retired from the state of Georgia, he last served aschief assistant in the Ocmulgee Judicial CircuitDistrict Attorney’s Office. He is a member of theProsecuting Attorneys Council of Georgia. His familyincludes wife Jeanine and daughter, Mary Beth.Ken VanceAlthough he is atransplant from SouthGeorgia, member-at-largeKen Vance has been adedicated citizen ofMilledgeville for decades.Ken VanceHe is currently in his firstterm as a board member and isexcited to be part of the school’s bright future.Vance brings a myriad of experiences to the boardtable. As the head of campus police at GC for overtwenty-seven years, he was known to locals andstudents simply as “Chief.” He served on theMilledgeville City Council for twenty-eight years andhas degrees in English, Creative Writing, and PublicAdministration. Governor Sonny Purdue appointedVance as the executive director of the Peace OfficersStandards and Training Council of Georgia-he wasreappointed under current Governor Nathan Deal.Married to Carol Grant Vance, they have twochildren, Emily (HS ’06) and John Austin (HS ’10),who are both GMC graduates. Vance praises thestrong educational support that helped his childrenachieve success. “The Character Education Programthat is the foundation of the school’s curriculum iswhat I see as the greatest influence on my children,”said Vance. “Additionally, the disciplined environment,created by Principal John Thornton and AssistantPrincipal Pam Grant and the wonderful faculty,contributed to their value base.” He firmly believes theschool prepares students for the next step in their livesafter graduation.SPRING 2015 The Cadence7

GMC Foundation isTOP FUNDRAISERIN GEORGIA GIVES DAY CAMPAIGNThe GMC Foundation was named the state’stop fundraiser during Georgia Gives Day, raising 120,705 during the 24-hour online givingcampaign on November 13, 2014. Georgia GivesDay is asignificantplatform forengagingonline givingand thisevent hasbecome partof ing campaign. Our efforts brought asizable increase due in large part byramping up our social media exposurewhich helped us reach more audiences thanin years past.Our donors understand the importance of investing inscholarships for our students, many of whom are thefirst in their family to attend college. With nine (soon tobe 11) locations across the state, we encouraged afriendly competitionamong our campuses,which added to theexcitement of the day.We were proud ofthe level of involvement by our studentsvia social media.Anyone who donatedor tweeted about ourcampaign received asticker, with thehash tag (#GMCGives). Usery Jr., former U.S. Secretary of Laborand GMC alumnus, cut the ceremonial ribbon that unveiled thenew Usery Community Room.“I believe I have lived a life in accordance with the creed of this institutionand I am proud to call myself a GMC alumnus,” Usery said. “But I am also 91years old, and I want to make sure that the school that I love and has made methe man I am today lives on long after we have passed. I am asking that thisroom be christened the Usery Community Room to reflect the largest part ofmy public life at GMC and the navy.”Usery became the first Georgian to serve as U.S. Secretary of Labor. Hewas appointed to the position in 1976 by U.S. President Gerald Ford.During his military career, he served aboard the Tutuila in the U.S. Navy’sPacific Fleet from 1943-1946.During the ribbon cutting ceremony, Usery expressed his thoughts on thesignificance GMC has had on the accomplishments in his life.“Through many trials in the navy the GMC mottos, ‘duty, honor, country,’and ‘character above all’ were always there to guide me. GMC made it possibleto face the fear of death and overcome it,” he said.GMC President Lt. Gen. William B. Caldwell, IV said it was an honor tobe in the company of Usery and an even greater honor to have his legacypreserved at GMC.“We are in the presence of a great man, but we are also in the presence ofone of our most dedicated alumni. It is truly an honor to have his legacypreserved at our institution.”Usery said it was his fondest hope that the room will help bring peopletogether.“I hope that this room may in a small way help bring people together notjust among the faculty and students at GMC but across our fair city — helpingto overcome current geographic and racial barriers.”The coming together of different groups is the core objective of the newcommunity room as well as his legacy, he added.“As my legacy at GMC, I want to help in providing for the years ahead the opportunity for all of us to work together for thefuture we want our children, our schools, our city and our nation to have.
