ACT ONEAbout 10 minutes prior to curtaintime, CLAUDE comes on stage, looksaround, and then sits down in thecenter. At the same time, theTRIBE appears from the wings, in thetower, on the scaffoldings, and inthe Audience. THEY carry flowers andburning incense sticks, whichTHEY hand out to the members ofthe Audience. About four minuteslater, TWO GIRLS come on stagewith an "altar" cloth, and aburning flame in some kind ofearthenware receptacle on a stand.THEY set this up in front ofCLAUDE. A strange kind ofeleqtronic sound starts in theorchestra (ad lib sounds frompercussion and lead guitar) andit builds and intensifiesover the next five minutes.Bird calls are employedhere by the TRIBE. At the sametime the TRIBE in a ritualistickind of slow motion starts converging on stage, each personconcerned with something -- anarticle of clothing, a part oftheir body, anything personalto each. BERGER and SHEILAapproach CLAUDE, and BERGER, witha pair of scissors, cuts a lockof CLAUDE'S hair. At this, theTRIBE freezes in mid-action. BERGERhands the cut hair to SHEILA whoputs it into the flame. The TRIBEutters an earthy sound together andunfreezes, resuming slow-motionmovement. RONNY picks up the flameand starts to sing.
