In Saxon grade 3, you need 20 100 bills, 50 10 bills, and 50 1 bills. MATH INTERMEDIATE SERIES (3-5)Also available fromthe publishers of Saxonis the Math IntermediateSeries (their public schoolline). This textbook-basedprogram offers an alternative for parents whowant to stick to Saxon,but want a colorful, hardcover text written to thestudent, rather than anoverwhelming scripted teacher’s manual – thereare no teacher’s manuals in this series.Grade 3 can be used in lieu of the traditionalSaxon Math 3 and covers the same topics –addition/subtraction facts, fractions, probability, estimating/calculating area, multiplicationand division facts, dividing two-digit numbers,multiplying three numbers, arrays, congruentshapes, capacity, polygons, classifying angles,adding/subtracting multi-digit numbers, estimating lengths and distances, etc. There are 110lessons and 11 “Investigations” which exploremath concepts in-depth. Manipulatives are mentioned (but optional), and assessments are writtenonly as opposed to both oral and written in thetraditional Saxon Math 3.Grades 4 and 5 can be used instead of Saxon5/4 and 6/5. These include 120 lessons each,along with 12 “Investigations” in each. EarlyFinisher Problems found in the Intermediateedition offer enrichment and real-world application. The hardcover Student Text provides all thedaily instruction and assignments. As is Saxon’snorm, the text is no-nonsense but attractivein a clean-cut way. An accent color helpsillustrate concepts and provides some organizational structure. There are 120 daily Lessonsplus 12 Investigations (practical application) ineach course. Groups of ten Lessons and oneInvestigation are wrapped into a Section, each ofwhich has a particular focus and includes particular mathematical strands.Daily Lessons follow a pattern that will befamiliar to Saxon users. A Power Up (BuildingPower) section reviews math facts and providesmental math problems as well as a problem solving “dilemma” (i.e. problem). The New Concept(Increasing Knowledge) segment provides instruction (written directly to the student), workedexamples and a short Practice Set for reinforcingwhat has just been learned. Written Practice(Strengthening Concepts) is a longer set of problems that reviews and continues practice on concepts cumulative from the start of the book. EarlyFinishers (not included with every lesson) are afew real-world application problems availableto students who complete the assignment early.The Solutions Manuals include both answersand solutions. There are answers to the following: Power-Up facts, Mental Math and ProblemSolving. There are solutions to the following:Assessments, Practice Sets, Written Practice,and Early Finishers. [Please note that answersand solutions to some sets of exercises are onlyavailable to those with the Teacher’s Manual.]Power-Up Workbooks provide one page warmups for each lesson. The content covers skills and conceptsthat are included in the math curriculum of thepreceding year. This test might be totally unnecessary if you’re a continuing Saxon student but ifcoming into Saxon from another series, it couldbe helpful to determine if the course is the rightone. Solutions for this test are in the SolutionsManual. Power Up Tests are given along withthe Cumulative Tests and are designed as a quickassessment of fact recall. Benchmark Tests serveas quarterly exams or to help identify conceptswhich need additional instruction and practice.The End-of-Course Exam (multiple choice) is afinal exam. This Course Assessments Book isexpensive and may be necessary if you need toprovide tests for an overseeing agency. WrittenPractices are cumulative, however, and willprovide much the same information if takenunder testing conditions. The Assessments Bookis reproducible for a classroom.This series from Saxon is a more recent versionof their middle school math. Although Course 1compares roughly to Math 76 and Course 2 compares roughly to Math 87, there are significantdifferences between Course 3 and Algebra 1/2.The homeschool editions of Math 54, 65, 76,and 87 along with Algebra 1/2 appear to be a bitmore advanced at each level than their Coursecounterparts. This is noticeable when comparingthe placement tests from each series. Althoughthere are similar types of problems, computational difficulty appears to be stronger in the olderhomeschool edition. As mentioned earlier, thereis a TM (and a couple of other resources) for thisseries that is not available to us. However, eachcourse is totally “do-able” with the componentsavailable.
