ForewordAs a pastor, an author, and a leader, I am constantly reading. I read to learnmore about the Bible, to find stories and illustrations for my sermons andbooks, to stay current on cultural trends, and to develop my skills in everyarea of life. Over the last two decades, I have read hundreds of books thathave encouraged or educated me in some way. But Today Matters is on ashort list of books that have transformed me and my ministry. The principles in this book and video series can transform your life, too.Changing your attitude to life’s challenges, identifying your personal andprofessional priorities, seeking out growth opportunities, and developingyour relationships with God and with others are choices you can maketoday that will enrich your life now and reorient the trajectory of yourfuture. I have learned so much about these ideas from my friend JohnMaxwell and I have seen firsthand how powerful each one can be inbuilding a successful life.Today Matters has changed the way I think about my roles as a husband, father, pastor, and friend. I’m so grateful to John for his investment of life instudying and sharing these ideas. My prayer is that you will also learn andlive out these principles - starting today.Chris HodgesFounding and Sr. PastorChurch of the HighlandsBirmingham, AL9

IntroductionHello, my friend! You are preparing to engage in an important activity. The small groupyou are about to take part in has the potential to change people’s lives—beginning with yours! One of the most significant discoveries of my life was realizing that weoften place too much emphasis on making decisions and too little onmanaging the decisions we’ve already made. This discovery was sosignificant to me that I wrote a book about it called Today Matters. Thethesis of the book is that successful people make right decisions early andmanage those decisions daily.People create success in their lives by focusing on today. It may soundtrite, but today is the only time you have. It’s too late for yesterday. Andyou can’t depend on tomorrow. That’s why today matters. Most of the timewe miss that. Why? Because we over exaggerate our yesterday, overestimate ourtomorrow and underestimate the importance of today. The Bible teaches us You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. And these words which I command you TODAYshall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligentlyto your children, and shall talk of them when yousit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.(DEUTERONOMY 6:5-7)When we focus on today, tomorrow takes care of itself. When we focuson yesterday we miss the opportunities of today. What’s ironic is that ifyou focus on today, you get a better tomorrow. Wise choices today put10

“change in the pocket” for future choices. You can’t change yesterday. You can’t count on tomorrow. But you canchoose what you do today.I challenge you to make today your focus. If you are successful in doingthat, you will find this small group experience very rewarding and so willthe people you connect with.As you embark on this journey, just remember to be yourself, bring energyto the meetings, and focus your attention on living out what you learn eachday.Thank you for being part of this Today Matters small group. I know it willadd value to you and transfer your value to others!Your friend,JOHN C. MAXWELL11

UsingT H I SW O R K B O O K1. Notice in the Table of Contents there are three sections: (1)Sessions; (2) Appendices; and (3) Small Group Leaders. Familiarizeyourself with the Appendices. Some of them will be used in thesessions themselves.2. If you are facilitating/leading or co-leading a small group, thesection Small Group Leaders will give you some experiences ofothers that will encourage you and help you avoid many commonobstacles to effective small group leadership.3. Use this workbook as a guide, not a straightjacket. If the groupresponds to the lesson in an unexpected but honest way, go withthat. If you think of a better question than the next one in thelesson, ask it. Take to heart the insights included in the FrequentlyAsked Questions pages and the Small Group Leaders section.4.Enjoy your Small Group experience.5. Pray before each session—for your group members, for your timetogether, or wisdom and insights.6. Read the Outline for Each Session on the next pages so that youunderstand how the sessions will flow.13

OutlineO FE A C HS E S S I O NRead through this outline to get a clearidea of how each group meeting will bestructured. A typical group session forthe Today Matters study will include thefollowing sections:WEEKLY MEMORY VERSES - Each session opens with a Memory Versethat emphasizes an important truth from the session. This is an optionalexercise, but we believe memorizing scripture is a powerful way to growspiritually. We encourage you to give this important habit a try. The versesfor each session are also listed in the Appendices.INTRODUCTION - Each lesson opens with a brief thought that will helpyou prepare for the session and get you thinking about that week’s topic.Make it a practice to read these before each session. You may want tohave the group read them aloud.SHARE YOUR STORY - The foundation for spiritual growth is an intimateconnection with God and His family. You build that connection by sharingyour story with a few people who really know you and who earn your trust. This section includes some simple questions to get you talking—letting youshare as much or as little of your story as you choose.14

HEAR GOD’S STORY - In this section, you’ll read the Bible and listen toteaching in order to hear God’s story—and begin to see how His storyaligns with yours. When the study directs you to, you’ll watch a shortteaching segment on video. You’ll then have an opportunity to read apassage of scripture and discuss both the teaching and the text. The goalisn’t to accumulate information, but to apply the insights from scripture toyour daily life.STUDY NOTES - This brief excerpt from the book Today Matters will godeeper into one aspect of the week’s topic.CREATE A NEW STORY - In this section, you’ll have an opportunity to gobeyond Bible study to biblical living. This section will also have a questionor two that will challenge you to live out your faith by serving others, sharing your faith, or worshipping God.FOR ADDITIONAL STUDY - If you have time and want to dig deeper intomore Bible passages about the topic, we’ve provided additional passagesand questions. You can use them during the meeting or as homework.Your group may choose to read and prepare before each meeting in orderto cover more biblical material. Or, group members can use the additionalstudy section during the week after the meeting. If you prefer not to dostudy homework, this section will provide you with plenty to discuss withinthe group. These options allow individuals or the whole group to expandtheir study, while still accommodating those who can’t do homework or arenew to your group.DAILY DEVOTIONS - Each week on the Daily Devotions pages, we providescriptures to reflect on between sessions. This provides you with a chanceto slow down, read just a small portion of scripture each day, and praythrough it. You’ll then have a chance to journal your response to whatyou’ve read. Use this section to seek God on your own throughout theweek. This time at home should begin and end with prayer. Don’t get in ahurry. Take enough time to hear from God and talk to Him!15

S E S S I O NO N ETODAYMATTERSOn July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress of the United States ofAmerica adopted the Declaration of Independence, formally assertingtheir independence from England. Skirmishes with England had startedmore than a year before in Massachusetts, and with the Declaration, theCongress and the colonists made the separation of the two countriesofficial.Remember this: Whoever sowssparingly will also reap sparingly, andwhoever sows generously will alsoreap generously.2 CORINTHIANS 9:616

Americans now celebrate the Fourthof July as one of their most belovednational holidays. Each year they shoot offfireworks, soak up the summer sun, andremember the revolution that changed theircountry. Independence Day was a turningpoint for their nation, and the momentousevents of that day more than 200 yearsago continue to shape the culture and thevalues of America. However, not everyone realized thesignificance of the Declaration or the warthat followed. In his diary entry for July 4,1776, King George III, the king of England, wrote only this: “Nothing of importancehappened today.” Without email or Twitter, the king had no idea his colonies wererebelling or that England was about to beat war. What seemed like a routine day toKing George was actually a day that wouldchange the world.1Our daily choices probably won’t causea national revolution. They may notaffect kingdoms. But they do matter. Thedisciplines and decisions of today have ahuge impact on the days to come. As webegin this study together, let’s look at howwe can build meaningful lives one dayat a time and how our choices today canrevolutionize our future.17

- If your group is new, welcome newcomers. Introduce everyone—you may even want to have name tags for this first meeting.- Open your group with a brief prayer asking God for insight as youstudy. You can pray for specific requests at the end of the meeting,or you can stop momentarily to pray if a particular situation comesup during your discussion.- Before you start this first meeting, get contact information for everyparticipant.- Whether your group is new or ongoing, it’s always important toreview your values. On page 118 is a Small Group Essentials forSuccess section with important values for sustaining healthy, balanced groups. Choose one or two of these values (onesyou haven’t previously focused on or have room to grow in) toemphasize during this study.- Ask the members of your group what they hope to get out of thisgroup. Note their answers, and share them with us so we cancreate even more effective resources for groups!19

ShareY O U RS T O R YBegin your time together by using thefollowing questions and activities to getpeople talking.Do you have any habits or disciplines that you try to include in yourlife each day? What is a decision you’ve made in the past that is significantlyaffecting your life now?20

WatchT H ED V DAfter watching the video, take two minutes beforemoving into groupdiscussion to record yourthree biggest takeawaysfrom this session. Howwill you apply this week’steaching to your life?.21

HearG O D ’ SS T O R YRead Galatians 6:7-10.Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what hesows. 8 Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reapdestruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reapeternal life. 9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the propertime we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. 10 Therefore, as we haveopportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong tothe family of believers.722

How do we sow to please our flesh? Howdo we sow to please the Spirit?Have you ever become weary of doinggood? What is the promise if we endure? How does this passage reinforce theimportance of daily consistency? What are some ways you can use each dayto bless others? To please the Spirit?23

StudyN O T E SIsn’t it appealing to think about making each day a masterpiece? Thequestion is, how? What does it take? I believe there are two ingredientsnecessary to make every day a masterpiece: decisions and discipline. They are like two sides of the same coin. You could call them “goal setting”and “goal getting.” They can’t be separated because one is worthlesswithout the other. I say that because .Good Decisions – Daily Discipline A Plan without a PayoffDaily Discipline – Good Decisions Regimentation without RewardGood Decisions Daily Discipline A Masterpiece of TodayTime is an equal opportunity employer, but how we treat time is notequal. Time is like a block of marble. Give a block of marble to an averageperson, and you end up with .a block of marble. But put it in the hands ofa master sculptor, and watch what happens! The sculptor looks at it withan artist’s eye. First, he makes decisions about what it will be. Then hepractices the disciplines of his craft until he has transformed lifeless stoneinto a masterpiece. I believe you and I can become like the sculptor. Wecan learn to become master craftsmen—not of stone but of our lives.24

CreateAN E WS T O R YIn this section, talk about how you will apply the wisdom you’ve learnedfrom the teaching and Bible study. Then think about practical steps youcan take in the coming week to live out what you’ve learned. What is your definition of a successful life? How does surrender lead to success? What does it mean to be asteward of life? What is the difference between making a decision and managing thatdecision? Why is managing our decisions so important? How do you maximize the moments of your life and make them matter? Why is preparation so key to a successful life? Why isconsistency so important?Take a look at the Circles of Life diagram on the next page and write thenames of two or three people you know who need to know Christ. Committo praying for God’s guidance and an opportunity to share with each ofthem. Would they be open to joining the group? Share your lists with thegroup so you can all be praying for the people you’ve identified.26

Choose one person—in this group or outside it—who you can begingoing deeper with in an intentional way. This might be your mom ordad, a cousin, an aunt or uncle, a roommate, a college buddy, or aneighbor. Choose someone who might be open to “doing life” withyou at a deeper level and pray about that opportunity. This week how will you plan to interact with the Bible? Perhaps youcan commit to spending time in the Daily Devotions or Additional Studysessions of this study guide.Give each person an opportunity to share prayer requests. If you’d like, you can write these on the Prayer and Praise Report on page 120.Close your meeting with prayer.Family(immediate or extended)FamiliarFriends(neighbors, kids, sportsteams, school, and so forth)FunFirm(gym, hobbies, hangouts)(work)27

AdditionalS T U D YTake some time between now and your next meeting to dig into God’sWord. Explore the Bible passages related to this session’s theme on yourown. Jot down your reflections in a journal or in this study guide. You mayeven want to use a Bible website or app to look up commentary on thesepassages. If you like, share what you learn with the group the next timeyou meet.Read 2 Corinthians 6:1-2.What does it mean to receive God’s grace in vain? How can that happen? How would it change your life if you lived as if verse 2 were really true—every day?How do you need God’s help so you can make today’s moments matter?Read Matthew 6:31-34.How does worry keep us from living in today? What does it mean to seek God’s kingdom first?Do you find verse 34 encouraging or discouraging? Why?28

S E S S I O NT W OATTITUDEViktor Frankl was an Austrian neurologist and psychiatrist, but he isperhaps best known as a Holocaust survivor and as the author of the bookMan’s Search for Meaning. In this book, Frankl shares his experience ina number of different concentration camps and describes his journey tofind meaning in suffering. In this short but powerful book, he shares howeach of us can overcome any hardship when the struggles are reframed asopportunities to grow, learn, and serve others.Frankl famously wrote, “Everything can be taken from a man but one thing:the last of the human freedoms – to choose one’s attitude in any given setof circumstances.” We cannot always control what happens to us, nor canwe control how people respond to us, but we can control what happenswithin us. We have the freedom to decide how we will respond to thechallenges that come our way. Our attitude toward setbacks and strugglesis often the difference maker in living a successful life. Today we’ll explorehow we can choose the attitudes that will make today matter.Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that youmay become blameless and pure, “children of God withoutfault in a warped and crooked generation.” Then you willshine among them like stars in the sky as you hold firmlyto the word of life.2 CORINTHIANS 9:632

Has there been atime when you had the “right” to have a bad attitude, but you took the highroad and made a difference with a good attitude? In the last session, we asked you to write some names in the Circles of Lifediagram. Who did you identify as the people in your life who need to meetJesus? Go back to the Circles of Life diagram on page 27 to help you thinkof various people you come in contact with on a regular basis who needto know Jesus more deeply. HearG O D ’ SS T O R YRead Philippians 4:4-9.Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let yourgentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious aboutanything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.7 And the peace of God, which transcends allunderstanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.8Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whateveris right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—ifanything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. 9 Whatever436

you have learned or received or heard fromme, or seen in me—put it into practice. Andthe God of peace will be with you.How can we rejoice when we are facingdifficulties? StudyN O T E SA friend emailed me the story of a very “together” and independent ninetytwo-year-old lady who was moving into a nursing home. Since she waslegally blind and her husband of 70 years had passed away, the movewas her only option. She waited in the lobby of the facility for a long timebefore finally being told that her room was ready. As she was escorteddown the corridor, her attendant described the room, down to the curtainshung on the windows.“I love it,” the elderly lady enthused.“But you haven’t even seen the room yet. Just wait,” the attendantresponded.“That doesn’t have anything to do with it,” she replied. “Happiness issomething you decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my room or notdoesn’t depend on how the furniture is arranged. It’s how I arrangemy mind.”Appreciation isn’t a matter of taste or sophistication. It’s a matter ofperspective. John Wooden said, “Things turn out best for the people whomake the best of the way things turn out.” The place to start is with thelittle things. If you can learn to appreciate and be grateful for them, you’llappreciate the big things as well as everything in between.38
