Jenna Kearns, Susan St. JohnDirector’s Note"The call to adventure is the pointin a person's life when they are firstgiven notice that everything is goingto change, whether they know it ornot." — Joseph Campbell,The Hero’s JourneyThe journey from childhood toadulthood, the adventure of simplygrowing up, takes courage andtenacity. The challenges of parentingrequire grace, patience, and incrediblefortitude. Into the Woods posits that,to make these journeys, you mustleave your everyday life and go intothe woods, where you adventure, lose, and learn, only to return to yourregular life a different person. Andjust when you think you’ve got it allfigured out, you have to go to thewoods again to learn a new lesson, slay a new giant, or make a newfriend. To me, this play is about heroicoptimism. In a world with an absenceof absolutes, for a person to hope–orto wish–can often be a brave, andlife-altering choice. Into the Woodsis made up of wishes and theirconsequences, and that pattern isa big part of what makes fairy talestick.Fairy tales must generate wonder.Through magic or supernaturalcharacters or events, these storiesteach us how to survive, by surprisingus with events that would not occurin our world. Additionally, almost allfairy tales offer hope, either withinthe bounds of the story (“And theylived happily, ever after”) or beyondit, teaching the story’s audience alesson so that misfortune is notrepeated. At its heart, I believe it’s a playabout community and hope. If, asscholar Marina Warner writes, “[fairytales are] stories that try to find thetruth and give us glimpses of greaterthings,” then Into the Woods presentsa truth I hope is true: that to survivethis life, we need to keep wishing, andkeep going into the woods, together.— Kathryn Van Meterencoreartsseattle.com    5
