FAQ’SFrequently Asked QuestionsWhat are the advantages of a career elective at Ocean County Vocational Technical School?- Receive between 10 and 15 elective credits from the home high school per year- Earn college credits to jump start a college education through articulation agreements- Receive a certificate of completion from OCVTS, in addition to various national certifications- Receive assistance with job placement in related fields of employment- Receive scholarship assistance for ‘After High School’ vocational programsWho should attend Ocean County Vocational Technical School?The Ocean County Vocational Technical School offers career majors in over 30 areas for students going on to college or directly to theworld of work. OCVTS works hand-in-hand with sending schools to provide a complete education for high school students. Students mayattend during their junior and senior year, as well as post graduate. The students attend “home school” for half a day and are transportedto the vocational center for the other half. Ties are maintained with the home school, where they pursue academic classes, take part insports or other extracurricular activities, and graduate. School counseling services are jointly provided by the vocational school and thehome district. Students receive a certificate from OCVTS, as well as a high school diploma from their home school.Are there prerequisites to apply to Ocean County Vocational Technical School?In order to be enrolled at the Ocean County Vocational Technical School, a student must receive a recommendation from his/hercounselor. The student should have successfully completed the tenth grade to enter any of the two year courses. Some programs willrequire an entrance exam and acceptance will be based on the results of that exam. All applicants interested in Child Care Professions,Employment Orientation Service Occupations, Culinary Arts programs or medical-related programs will be responsible for getting aMantoux test for tuberculosis prior to the start of the school year. Grades and high school attendance may be reviewed prior to acceptance.Once enrolled at OCVTS, attendance is strictly monitored and directly affects a student’s grade. Poor attendance can impact enrollmentstatus. Additional application forms are available from the home school guidance counselor, the OCVTS Student Services and AdmissionsDepartment, school counselors at each OCVTS center and at www.ocvts.org.Earn College Credits ( Articulation Agreements )10 OCVTS programs provide opportunities to earn college credit through advanced coursework.Ocean County Vocational Technical School has established articulation agreements with over 20 colleges, universities and technicalinstitutes, which allow students to earn college credits for the work they complete in their training program. The Ocean CountyVocational Technical School has embraced many articulation offerings, expanding to include both full and part-time programs. Applied ArtsDesign and Visual Communications* (Dual Enrollment)2 years/900 hoursBrickThe Design and Visual Communications (DVC) Career Cluster provides students interested in Photography, Multimedia and Printing a hands-on environment to createdesigns for advertising, marketing and entertainment. It emphasizes prep aration forboth immediate employment upon course completion, as well as continuing educationon the collegiate level. The DVC Program offers “Jump Start’ classes at Ocean CountyCollege (OCC) and an Adobe Certified Associates certificate in PhotoShop, InDesign,Illustrator and Premier. The DVC Program consists of eleven different courses. Thesecourses consist of both conventional and digital skill competencies to assure graduatesare competitive in a wide variety of design and visual communication careers, includingProfessional Photographer, Animator, Game Designer, Illustrator, Screen-Printer, WebDesigner, or Videographer.The Multimedia Component emphasizes the creation of digital art for print,video and electronic media. This component of the program includes courses in: ImageManipulation, Vector Art, 2D Animation, Interactive Design, Web Design, Video production and 3D Printing. Hands-on experience includes operating a laser engraver, heatpresses, graphics tablets, multi-camera editors, image scanners and associated accessories to produce t-shirts, personalized pens, glasses, picture frames, TV showsand more. This component offers classes in the Adobe Certified Associate for Illustratorand Premier.The Photography Component covers the techniques of traditional and digitalphotography highlighting skills required in advertising, portraiture, multimedia, commercial and fine art. Students who have graduated from high school have the option toattend the DVC program full-time, two sessions per day, for an intensive completion ofthe program in a single year.Engineering/Computer & DesignComputer Service Repair1 year/450 hoursToms RiverThis program is suggested for high school and post-secondary students interested inpursuing a career within the computer service repair and computer networking field.Topics covered in the course include: managing and troubleshooting PC’s and Applecomputer systems, the visible PC, visible Windows, visible networks, microprocessors (CPU), Ram, BIOS, motherboards, power supplies, hard drive technologies, removable media, installing and upgrading Windows, command line interface, troubleshooting Windows, input devices, video cards (business and gaming), networking,LAN, wireless networks, internet, mobile devices, printers, securing computers andnetworks. Hands-on building and configuring complete computer systems are available with lab activities. Opportunities exist for robotics theory, building and programming. Program areas of study include development and reading of mechanical engineering production drawings through the extensive use of hand-drafting, 2D Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD), and 3D CAD Solid Modeling technologies to design, draw and verify qualitycontrol. The proceeding skill sets are enhanced with studies of 3D-Printing Prototyping,robotics and hand fabrication tools and methods.This program emphasizes a diverse set of technical and academic skills, while incorporating valuable work-based learning experiences. Construction TradesBuilding Construction Technology2 years/900 hoursBrickThroughout this 2-year course, students will learn the basic fundamentals of construction, as well as touching on more in-depth topics such as blueprint reading,framing, concrete block construction, roofing, sheathing, siding, drywall applications, door and window installation, interior finishes, and much more. The theoryof installation, trim work, and finished ceilings and floors are also explored. Asa county vocational school, there are also a variety of local community serviceopportunities that students may engage in as well. Students are also exposedto various local companies and industry professionals, with some companies offering apprenticeship opportunities, as well as colleges and technical institutesfor continuing education. With speed, safety, and true hands-on experience, wetrain our students to be the best they can be in order to be well-educated andskilled tradesmen.Custom Woodworking and Design2 years/900 hoursJacksonStudents learn the fundamentals of working with wood in our well-equippedshop, from planning a project to adding detailed finishing work. Students willuse traditional woodworking equipment, hand tools, and the latest computer numerically controlled (CNC) machinery and software. Using prints, specifications,and shop drawings, students learn to plan creative projects in the most effectivemanner. Students will learn the setup and operation of woodworking machinery and equipment, laminating, sanding, veneering, machining, assembly, andfinishing. The program is project
