Like all offices, the beginning of theschool year proves to be busy for our Admissions Office. Over the last severalmonths, we have been meeting with prospective students and their families. Wehave visited over 1000 students in classrooms and to date have welcomed overone hundred 7th and 8th graders for Shadow Visits. We collaborate with teams tohost tournaments and Junior High Nights and this week we will see approximately250 8th graders here at JCA for Step-Up Day.Still, the most important part of our office is to thank our students, faculty andfamilies every day, because without students, faculty and families, we cannot doour job! We thank our students for their willingness to go outside their comfortzone to make a student they have never met feel welcome and part of our family during a Shadow Visit. We thank our students who prepare and confidentlydeliver a heart-felt speech about why they love JCA and for showing what itmeans to be true Angels and Hilltoppers on and off the court or field. We thankour faculty because you are why students love JCA. Lastly, thanks to you, ourparents, because without your children we would not be so blessed! The Admission’s Office, in all reality, is a team of thousands made up of students, faculty, alumni, parents and friends of JCA. We have hundreds of students willing to volunteer on a weekend or day off to help at our events. In fact, 50% ourfreshmen class will be working at our 8th grade Step-Up Day this Friday. We havemany students who stop in our office every week requesting to bring around a7th or 8th grader on a Shadow Visit. Our students are super excited about beingAngels and Hilltoppers! One of the largest clubs at JCA is the Student Ambassador Club! Can you imagine anything better than students so excited about goingto school? That is certainly saying something! With that in mind, I ask for your help with a few of our upcoming events. OnSunday, November 22 from 10 am – 2 pm and Thursday, December 3 from 6pm – 8 pm, we will host our Open House for prospective families. We open ourdoors and our hearts to those families deciding on a high school of choice. Pleaseinvite your neighbors, nieces, nephews and friends to attend. Your invitationprovides a “stamp of approval” for JCA.Also, if you are available, we would appreciate your help at either of the OpenHouses. Please email me at mragusa@jca-online.org if you are able!Blessings to you and your family!Mary RagusaMary RagusaDirector of Admissions815.741.0500, ext. 214November 2015

As our Scholarship Committee begins toreview senior resumes, we will be looking for accurate, current information for theselection of students for scholarships as well as for nominating students for recognition inprograms like Student of the Month. PLEASE, Seniors, keep your Naviance Resumecurrent.Parents of our senior students often call our office with questions regarding the collegeapplication process. Some of you were able to take advantage of our spring meetings toreview the process. Seniors went through an orientation of our Counseling System,NAVIANCE, and a review of the college application process. These are just a few of thehighlights that you might be interested in knowing. Feel free to contact your child’scounselor with any questions.TranscriptsTranscripts are sent upon request for college and scholarship applications. Please beaware that we are bound by JCA policy, if tuition is not current no transcript can be sent. There is a 5 charge per transcript.Selective ServiceAt the age of 18, boys are required to register for selective service. Register at:www.sss.govScholarship InformationLocal and national organizations send scholarship information to the guidance departmentat various times during the school year. Scholarships are announced during morningannouncements, posted on the bulletin board in the Guidance hallway, and will also be

posted in NAVIANCE. You can check Naviance regularly for updates to the scholarshiplistings.Financial Aid and FAFSAFor parents who are sending their first child off to college, we strongly suggest that youregister for your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) pin number. Theinformation on the FAFSA form is what colleges and universities base their financial aidpackages on. The FAFSA is not available to complete and submit until January 1st. Itwould be helpful though to register for your electronic pin number. This number willserve as your signature on the FAFSA. Both you and your child need to have your ownseparate number. You may register for your numbers now! Go to www.fafsa.ed.gov andclick on the words “pin site”.Other websites to visit for scholarship information ww.findtherightscholarship.comSocial Networking Sites & College AdmissionStudents are online sharing details for everyone to see. A student’s site becomespermanent, public information about them! Basically, whatever they post never reallygoes away. Once their information is online – even if they take it down – it becomespublic information, as their page can be saved on anyone’s computer. Most colleges are not surfing the Web for applicants’ profiles, however if your student isinteracting with colleges through Facebook, Twitter , or other social media they openthemselves up to scrutiny. In addition, when other people bring students’ blogging to theirattention, schools do respond. It’s important to project a professional impression throughvoice mail messages, e-mail addresses and Facebook postings. Admissions Counselorshave shared stories with us about applicants giving an e-mail address that leaves a verynegative impression that leads to a rejection. Remember, colleges are looking to not onlyadmit students but to build a great community. Please encourage your student not to giveuniversities a reason to view them as someone they do not want as part of theircommunity!

Students should stop and think before posting information and/or pictures aboutquestionable behavior on their sites. A good idea is to give it the “Grandma Test.” If youwouldn’t want your grandmother to see it, then you don’t want admissions officers orfuture employers to either. Remember, pictures and references of your student on theirfriends’ pages can be damaging too. Ask them to take down this kind of information. The important thing to remember is that what you post is for public view. So when it’stime to apply for college, students should take a look at their Facebook page to make surethey feel comfortable sharing everything they have posted with an admission officer and, later, with potential employers.(Information for the above article was obtained from the National Association for CollegeAdmission Counseling.)Freshmen Parents:On November 9, during the Service and Retreat Day, the Counseling Department willfacilitate and lead a Freshmen Workshop. We will conduct several informative, helpfulsessions addressing the following important topics:Naviance, Academic Success & Planning, Social Media, Healthy Decision Making, andfinally, the Will County Judges Association will be presenting "Seven Reasons to Leavethe Party”.REMINDER:Parents Please LIKE the Joliet Catholic Academy Facebook Page & TwitterFind us at Joliet Catholic Academy Counseling on FB & @jcacounseling on TwitterYou will receive: Important Information, Resources, Dates, College Visit Updates,Scholarship Information, etc Don’t Miss out!
