The purpose of the Alumni Symposium is to create campuscommunity-alumni interaction, which the School of Business strivesto achieve. This year, 10 accomplished professionals participated inthe event and interacted with students and faculty. These professionalscame from a variety of professional backgrounds including, Asset &Risk Management; Human Resource Management; and Internal Auditing. Dean Skolnik described the symposium as “a triangulation ofcontact” because there is vast engagement between students, faculty,and alumni. “It’s that culture of engagement that is passed on fromone class year of students to another,” he said. He also founded andserves as a member of the Gold Coast Bank Board ofDirectors in Islandia. The Lenz Center for Finance,Insurance and Risk Management, is the first endowedcenter at SUNY Oswego. SUNY Oswego is extremelygrateful for Lenz’s support and generosity in our outstanding business program.Visiting ScholarsDr. Soner AkkocProfessor Akkoc isfrom the Departmentof Banking and Financeat Dumlupinar University, Kutahya, Turkey.Dr. Akkoc’s researchinterests are in investment analysis, efficientcapital markets, neuralnetworks, and fuzzy logic. He plans to apply neuralnetworks to credit scoring models for securities, suchas CDs, CDOs, CMOs, and MBSs. Professor Akkocwill be concluding his one-year stay and departingfrom SUNY Oswego in January 2011.*****Dr. Jie GuoProfessor Guo is fromthe School of Management at Min Zu University of China. Dr. Guo hasresearch interests in project risk management andoperations management.She plans to research suitable principles, methodsand models for operation,and crisis management with special applications forminorities in China while at SUNY Oswego. She is alsoteaching MBA 515 – Management Science during theFall 2010 semester. Professor Guo will be concludingher one-year stay and departing from SUNY Oswegoin January 2011.*****Professor Jun MaProfessor Jun Ma is a lecturer in Management atShenyang University ofTechnology in Shenyang,China. His researchinterests are in operations management andtransportation networks.Professor Ma is fundedby the Chinese HigherEducation Council. Professor Ma began his one-yearstay in June 2010 and will stay until June 2011.2

Focus on Faculty RetirementsLanny KarnsDr. Lanny Karns, Professor of Management, is retiring this December after 35 years asa member of the SUNY Oswego School of Business Community. Dr. Karns served asDean of the School of Business from its inception in 1992 until June 2007. He has alsotaught numerous management courses including MGT 261, MGT 460, and MBA 517. Heis a member of the American Management Association, Decision Science Institute, andthe Society for College and University Planning. Under Dr. Karns leadership, the Schoolof Buiness received AACSB accredidation, developed new degree programs, and movedinto a new academic building. Professor Karns is an asset to the Management program atSUNY Oswego, and he will be greatly missed. We wish him the best of luck in his futureendeavors.*****Florence KirkDr. Florence Kirk, Professor of Accounting, is retiring this December after 17years as a member of the Oswego School of Business community. Dr. Kirkdedicates her time teaching Financial Accounting and Accounting theory. Sheis also an active faculty advisor for both The Accounting Society and BetaAlpha Psi. She encourages her students to get involved with VITA and othercommunity service events. Dr. Kirk is an asset to the accounting programhere at SUNY Oswego. Amongst many awards, she was the reciepient of theChancellors Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2006 and receipent of thePresidents Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2005. She is going to be missedby all members of the School of Business community. We wish her the best ofluck in her future endeavors.Gay Williams*****Professor Gay Williams, a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Accounting,Finance, and Law department, is retiring this December after 15 years withSUNY Oswego. Professor Williams has been teaching students public andprivate laws that affect business in all facets of its operations including international and ethical issues as well as legal concepts pertaining to the formation, operation, and dissolution of different forms of business organizations.She also coordinates the Business Law program. She will truly be missed bythe School of Business as she is an asset to our Business Law program. Wewish her the best of luck in her future endeavors.*****Robert HollenbeckProfessor Robert Hollenbeck, a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Accounting,Finance, and Law department, is retiring this December after 5 years with SUNYOswego. Throughout his career at SUNY Oswego, Professor Hollenbeck hastaught a variety of Accounting courses. He also coordinated VITA, VolunteerIncome Tax Assistance, with Professor Dean Crawford with helps from BetaAlpha Psi. Student RecognitionMichelle Hamann - ACT Student Initiative AwardMichelle Hamann, a fifthyear accounting major, isvery active in the School ofBusiness. On October 16,2010, at the Desmond Hotelin Albany, The Associationof Council Members andCollege Trustees (ACT)presented Ms. Hamann withthe ACT Student InitiativeAward. The award recognizes students or studentFrom left: Charles Spector, 5-year ACC/MBA Studentgroups that identify a needMichelle Hamann, Florence Kirkon the campus, or in thecommunity, and work to provide the best service or solution. During the2009-2010 school year Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK) National Leadership Honor Society received the Region II award for their Take the Leadprogram. As President of ODK, Ms. Hamann helped develop a sixsession program with a group of 8th graders who were unable to progress to the 9th grade. They were encouraged to utilize their strengths andbuild leadership roles through committee work for their middle schooldance. These students were motivated to plan the middle school danceand raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Project Run WithIt is a business consulting competition where students teamed withstudents from other business schools to produce a winning project forthe not-for-profit Community Health Awareness Council of MoutainView, California.*****Global Entrepreneurship Monitor(GEM)Sarfraz Mian, Chair of the Marketing and Management Department,is a leader and Principal Investigatorof GEM, a not-for-profit researchconsortium of 60 nations that studiesworld-wide entrepreneurial activity(http://www.gemconsortium.org/).The goal of GEM is to improvenew business development amongits member nations including theUS. During his last summer visit toPakistan, Dr. Mian successfully lobbied with local government officialsand the U.S. Agency for InternationalDevelopment to fund the GEMPakistan project. This year, Dr. Mianlaunched the study from IBA Karachi(the nation’s top business school) andhis research team surveyed more than2,000 Pakistanis including policy makers to discuss their entrepreneurial aspirations, behaviors and activities. TheGEM Pakistan 2010 research findingswill be released as part of the GlobalEntrepreneurship Monitor Report2010 in Washington, DC during theirJanuary 2011 annual meeting.COAPSUNY Oswego hosted its first annualCareer Opportunities in the Accounting Profession program in Summer2010. The summer program is inits 24th year of being held at severalcollege campuses across NYS givingunderserved students insight on theaccounting profession. A numberof SUNY Oswego faculty members participated in the 4-day event.There were 24 Syracuse-area highschool juniors who attended SUNYOswego’s COAP program. Oswego’sprogram featured a speaker from theIRS and numerous presentations ondeveloping a professional and successful career in the field of accounting. Amongst other things, the students traveled to Testone, Marshall& Discenza, a local CPA firm, toexperience the accounting professionfirsthand. Isaac-Lowe, chair of theHofstra COAP Advisory Board says,“the COAP experience allows us toopen up a whole new world for thesepromising young people, who thenhave the ability to seriously consideraccounting as a profession relativelyearly in their academic careers.”4
